A south Austin staple whose food is as 11/1/2012

A south Austin staple whose food is as fabulous as its interior design. Have a casual meal at the bar or choose to dine in the main dining room with front row views into the open kitchen. The menu changes daily and the specials are to die for. Try the crudo and mussels. Wine list is wonderful too! more

Profit oriented 8/30/2011

I completely support Farm Delivery and restaurants that support local produce. So I was thrilled to try Olivias at hotel St. Cecilias for my husbands birthday dinner with a pre-dinner cocktail and wine pairings for a five course meal. When I asked if one of the dinner could be priced without the liquor, or if another chair could be added for a DD they said not possible. Considering the meal would come out to $160 per person, I think that is unreasonable. I will continue to drive to San Antonio to experience wine pairings with amazing food at Las Canarias and anywhere else that customer satisfaction is more important than their profit! more

Bad 6course meal 6/14/2011

I love good food and i don't mind pay for it so i heard they are doing 6course meal on monday and it's foie gras 6 course for 150.00 per person. They said every course have foie gras even dessert. All the course is finished and i saw and tasteed one foie gras size of my thumb. And where was pairing wine? Cheap sparking wine after another...Oh glass of red. Anyway after 6 course meal, me and my husband had to go eat again. Food was not exciting i don't know where was foie gras and left with hunger. more

Not too concerned with client satisfaction. 3/26/2011

I was hoping to try Olivia at some point-any local restaurant who serves organic and local produce is worth trying at least once. I'd heard they were a little bit pricey and was excited I was able to purchase a Groupon for $15 for $30 of food. I acknowledge Groupon goofed by not putting into the coupon description that they only servce lunch on Friday and Saturday; most restaurants do so daily. With a very busy schedule working two jobs I realized I had just a week to use my Groupon. When I called Olivia they said because they only serve lunch two days a week the coupon would expire before I could use it. They were willing to allow me TWO DAYS more to use it but I would only get the original $15. paid. And as it turned out the only reservation they had available was a late afternoon on the second of the two days. As I could not make that time I basically lost out. I suggested rather than lose a potential customer, (the reason one would think they'd run a Groupon in the first place) they'd work with me a little bit more. They refused. Not impressive in my book and judging from the reviews here on Citysearch maybe it was for the best anyway. Good Luck, Olivia! more

disappointing service 9/26/2010

Food is alright, but the service was disappointing. I ordered a burger medium well and it came out rare. The waiter tried to convince me that because it was local beef it was going to look red even cooked medium well, and refused to fix the problem. more

VERY disappointing 7/26/2010

We visited Austin last summer & moved here in November. During our summer visit we ate at Olivia, with mixed reviews. Some friends hadn't tried it so we decided to give it one more shot, one year later. While they do meat well, everything else was either ""okay"", bland or just plain tasteless. We had (2 orders) potato gnocchi that were heavy, dry & had, literally, no flavor. We had a beet salad that looked like they just plopped some lettuce on the plate & put slices of beets (looks & tasted like STRAIGHT from the can!?) on top. NO presentation & no unique flavors. And we LOVE beets! :( Their menu ""changes daily"" -- hence they get no experience with anything?? It showed in their dishes. We're foodies & eat out a LOT -- with all that Austin has to offer, Olivia needs to step it up or get out of the way. Bottom line - we won't go back (either of the 5 of us). Pros: Beautiful atmosphere - they do meat well Cons: parking;everything but meat & one dessert was disappointing more

Very good 6/19/2010

Food was very good. A good place for true foodies. Had heard staff was rude, but did not experience this. Will definitely return soon. Pros: Excellent food Cons: Pricey for Austin more

Good for those who like massive amounts of salt 1/15/2010

The chef does not trust you to salt your own food -- no salt or pepper shakers on the table. Rest assured they DO salt it for you. 24 hours later I am still feeling the effects of the huge sodium hit and I couldn't even eat the skirt steak. The potato frites were cooked in peanut oil and nice and crisp. You can get the same WITHOUT the excess salt at Mighty Fine Burgers for substantially less $$$. Use a lot of buzzwords about ""local sourcing"" etc. etc. and salt the living crap out of everything and you can fool most of the people most of the time. Glad we had a $100 gift certificate instead of using our own funds. Pros: You don't need to salt your food Cons: Comes to the table grossly over-salted more

Love this place!! Great date spot!! 9/17/2009

My husband and I have been here several times and love it. It is one of our favorite date spots. We are very interested in sustainable farming and love to find restaurants that are too. We have yet to come and have a bad meal or a bad waiter! They have some interesting items on their menu, like lamb's tongue, but do not get discouraged....its actually delicious!! I highly recommend trying this place. Plus, their fried chicken on their brunch menu is fabulous!! Pros: Use local & organic ingredients Cons: Can get a little loud if you are seated near the kitchen more

Disappointing 7/22/2009

Trying to be too Metro. The Menu is made up of items that just don't go together. Scallops and Fried Eggs? The Pate Plate seemed old. The Waiter was great but the delivery of the food was way too slow for the number of people in the restaurant. No bar. WAY OVER PRICED! Pros: Waiter was great Cons: Menu too disjointed more

Great place for Unique Food 7/8/2009

Service was great - food was amazing! A place to take people visiting South Austin. Pros: Tried lamb's tongue for the first time and it was delicious! Cons: Very little parking - don't park at the taxidermy place more

Stone/Glass/Wood Austintacious building is the best thing about this place 2/17/2009

and the great rock fence on the deck at the entrance - very creative. Pros: nice building that spruces up a shabby 'hood Cons: VERY expensive for what you get, appetizers are mediocre, at best, the night we were there. more

Dissappointing service and food 2/13/2009

Olivia's is a stylish new restaurant that features local ingredients and a menu that is updated daily. However alluring this may sound, it was not worth the price. Our service was slow and at best perfunctory. Our server's personality was not inviting and we frequently got the impression of being inconvenienced. My spouse and I have many years of restaurant experience and our disgruntled server made it painful to leave 15%. Pros: Ambience, Location Cons: Poorly seasoned food, below average service for the price more

Fresh, delicious, well prepared food 1/18/2009

My fiance and I visited Olivia for the first time last night and had a great experience. The menu is diverse and interesting, and apparently changes nightly - which ensures you are getting high quality, seasonal product. The freshness of the food was evident in every dish we ordered, and all components of each plate were nicely paired and cooked to perfection. The oysters diablo were great, the homemade pasta with escargot I had was incredible, and my fiance's risotto and scallops were delicious. The highlight of the meal was the lamb's tongue - which was amazingly flavorful and melted in your mouth. I found the portion sizes to be perfect and actually did not find it too expensive for the high quality and innovative fare - we had a bottle of wine, two appetizers, and two entrees for around $100. Can't wait to go back. Pros: Fresh, well cooked cuisine; warm atmosphere more

Loved it! Great experience, delicious food, but very very pricey! Special occasion friendly, upscale 12/3/2008

Great experience and food. Watch out for that bill , prices are equivelent to Eddie Vs or Trulucks. Upscale dining on South Lamar. Gorgeous restaurant, beautiful design of space, much like Uchi. I would go there again. Parking is easy. Pros: beautiful surroundings, cozy more

3.5 Stars 11/10/2008

Two of us went Sunday night around 7 pm. We were seated in a booth right away. The decor and ambiance were nice, if just a tad bit loud. Our waiter was very friendly, albeit in a more TGIF-hangout way than in a professional upscale scene way. He was knowledgeable enough about the menu and wine list, however. We were brought the check WITH our dessert though, which was a considerable faux-pas and made us feel we were being rushed. Pros: Prompt seating, ambiance Cons: Food lacking creativity, wow-factor more

Great modern food 11/7/2008

Olivia offers a great mix of delicious modern cuisine. The interior is great, as well as the service. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. The food was great, but the menu has several dishes that I've seen elsewhere. My entree, snapper over white beans, tomatoes, and greens was perfect, but I've had that exact dish at several other places. My girlfriend's risotto was delicious, but nothing new.The wine list is extensive. Pros: Great modern food, service, interior. Extensive wine list, locally sourced foods. Cons: Pricey, many dishes are fairly common and available elsewhere more

Cool atmosphere and building, Great food 10/28/2008

Despite what I read about the service of Olivia's, I had a great experience here. We got there around 9 on a Friday night. We only had to wait 10 - 15 mins for our table and we had a seat at the bar to wait. Our waitress was friendly and answered all our questions. We had an appetizer (oysters were great), a salad and 2 entrees and everything was served just the way I asked for (split the salad, steak med rare). It's a great addition to the city. Pros: timely service, great ambience Cons: small parking lot more
