Amazing food bursting with flavor and well worth the visit. 3/9/2009

I've been going to this place for about the last 9 months on and off. The food for this place is simply amazing. Sometimes the wait staff can be a bit overloaded and things can run a little slow but the food more than makes up for the time that you spend waiting. It always arrives at the right temp (hot or cold) and the flavors simply burst upon the tongue. Often times I've seen the owner step in to help the staff take care of the tables and stop by to check on things. I've never waked out hungry even when all I had was a small appetizer, soup and salad. more

HORRIBLE service, EVERY TIME!!!! 12/29/2008

Great food, however the bar staff is horrible. They are slow and you have to wait over 10 minutes for a drink. I asked the bartender to close my tab and she came with the wrong credit card. appologized and said she'd fix it. After waiting for 25 minutes standing by the bar I she finally comes back with a receipt for $95, and all I had was 2 Vodka drinks and a coke. She got upset when I said those drinks weren't mine, and the manager, who were standing right next to her, just wached it. Pros: Best Empanadas around Cons: Horrible Bar Staff. Slow and not attention to details. more

Poor service... sub par food 8/24/2008

The service on the night I was there was extremely slow and the restaurant was empty, so I have no idea why our food took so long. The food was just so so, the only bright spot was the mojito which was tasty. All in all, not worth the price and definitely not worth the amount of time it takes to get your food. more

Hot Latin Vibe, Incredible Food and the BEST Margaritas In Chicago! 6/27/2008

In reading some of the past reviews here, you'll notice that they're all over a year old and not all positive. I think these can be described as ""growing pains"", which this restaurant has definitely outgrown. The food is outstanding, the service is personal, and the ""Ole Ole"" margaritas are my absolute favorite! I live in the neighborhood and have many choices of where to dine and spend my money. Ole Ole is on my list for a visit about once a week. Is there ALWAYS someone standing at the host stand to greet every guest as they come in the door? No...that's because they may be assisting the waitstaff or bartender expedite the customers requests. I can assure you, though, that you will acknowledged in less than 30 seconds and escorted to a table or the bar area. Food portions are large and flavorful. Did I say LARGE? The margaritas are to die for. The guacamole is fresh and chunky, and available in mild, medium or spicy. The corn tortilla chips are hand-fried--yummy! If you're in a rush to get in and out, or to be seated, just let the staff know. They want to please everyone. But if it's a busy night and it's going to ruin your experience if you have to wait too long, just come back another night when you have more time to enjoy your experience. The ambiance is vibrant with it's glow of candlelight and red mosaic. Weather permitting, the large doors open onto Clark Street and bring the excitement of Andersonville indoors. My favorite aspect of the restaurant is Gina, the owner. Gina is an absolute doll who is passionate about her place and wants nothing more than to make people happy. She makes it a point to stop by each table, when she's not busy running food or drinks for her staff. The rest of the staff is delightful and you'll get to know them, too, if you go often enough. Take my advice and GO! If you're looking for a relaxing evening of great food, delicious drinks, in a comfortable yet HOT Latin atmosphere, this is the place! Pros: Gina, Ambiance, Food, Ole Ole Margaritas, Staff Cons: Can be really busy on weekends. A Sunday brunch would be fun! more

Couldn't get anyone to greet us at the door.... 9/27/2007

I wish I could write a more comprehensive review of this restaurant, but we were never able to be seated, or for that matter even have anyone come to greet us at the door and let us know how long of a wait it might be. My partner and I arrived around 8:00 p.m. this past Saturday and the restaurant was busy, but not so busy that there was a line or that every table was full. We were the first ""in-line"" at the hostess stand where we remained for 5 minutes. During that time, no one came to greet us, take our names or even direct us to the bar. One waiter noticed our situation and made a hand gesture that someone would be with us in a minute, but still no one showed up. Given what we were seeing at the front door, we decided to leave and not try the restaurant for fear that the rest of the service would be similar to the lack of attention we received at the door. I am glad to see that others had a more positive experience. Cons: Poor service, could not even be greeted at the front door more

Best stuffed chicken breast! 8/8/2007

You also must try their fajitas and their churrasco! This is by far the best restaurant of it's kind in Chicago. I have been to Ole Ole on many an occasion and tried quite a few main dishes. There is a wide variety to choose from. Their appetizers are are out of this world. The service and atmosphere are excellent. It's just a fun place with very friendly people. Unless I find a restaurant to be awesome, I will not recommend it to anyone of my friends. In this case, I strongly suggest that you try Ole Ole. I promise, you will not be sorry. Pros: Excellent service and atmosphere. Cons: No parking available at restaurant. However, if you come early and you can park on the street. more

Best guacamole 8/2/2007

I'm a trained chef and I know good food when I taste it, food is my life. This restaurant offers a beautiful decor, friendly service, and great food. The guacamole is the freshest and best tasting I have ever had in a restaurant . The ceviche is outstanding and worth the trip. The paiaya was wonderful , huge portions so be ready for a doggy bag.I return often and have tried a different dish on each visit and I haven't been disappointed, I would highly recomend checking it out. Fun , festive and flavorfull Pros: Ambience, food Cons: parki ng on weeekends more

Fun Atmosphere; Bad Food, Poor Service 2/6/2007

I braved the freezing Chicago weather to have an intimate dinner out at Ole Ole recently. My first impression of the inside was ""fun""; the music was a Depeche Mode house mix and it was a lively atmosphere despite few people inside. The space was a bit cramped (we were seated near another couple despite tables towards the rear being open) but intimate. Wait service was prompt and friendly. However, shortly after my dining experience went downhill - my very first drink order was a house specialty yet they were out of the liquor to make it! I wasn't so crazy about the food; despite being ""an infusion"" of latin american style cooking (which I love!) including Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Cuban the food was average at best. My corn tortilla soup was far too spicy. Also my carne asada was overcooked and was a poor cut of meat with a lot of fat. To top it off, the ""pastry chef"" recently quit so the only choice of dessert was vanilla ice cream. Heck, they should have run across the street to the Swedish Bakery to pick up desserts in leui of this. To top it all off, when the check came, I was mistakenly charged for a pitcher of margaritas ($32) versus a single margarita ($10). When I brought this to the attention of the waiter he did make it right by ""comping"" the drink for the mistake. Overall, given the choice of Latin restaurants in Chicago, this one just doesn't stack up. Dinner for two with drinks and tip averaged $85 for an average dining experience. I would not recommend this restaurant. Pros: Ambience Cons: Food Quality was poor, no desserts, ran out of liquor for house specialty drink, price more

Classy Joint 7/14/2006

Our server was very polite and the service was prompt. The food was great and overall it's just a fun atmosphere. It's really nicely decorated and just is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood! more

Nice casual atmosphere, good food, slow service 7/12/2006

We just tried this place recently, and while there are some drawbacks, overall it was a good experience. We arrived very early (about 6 pm), and placed our orders, starting with empanadas as an appetizer. That's when the waiting began. It took about 20-25 minutes for the empanadas to arrive, at which point we kind of hurried through them, thinking the entrees would not be far behind. Were we wrong. Another half hour went by, and we enquired how soon we would be served. The waiter kept reassuring us it would only be a short while. Another 15-20 minutes passed. We were starving so we ordered some more empanadas. Just as we finished the last one, our dinners arrived. Our hopes were not high at this point, but we were very pleasantly surprised. My husband had the pork tenderloin, which was tender and juicy, with a fruit glaze. The only drawback was it was a bit too spicy. I had chicken fajitas, and my plate was overflowing with tasty strips of chicken, peppers, onions, beans, etc. Lots of tortillas, and generous bowls of garnishes, too. Enough for a meal, and a couple of lunches from the take home. For dessert we split a slice of cake, which was tasty but a little dry. All in all, the restaurant itself is very attractive, with a lively atmosphere, and the food quality was high, but timing and delays take away some of the enjoyment of the experience. Pros: Good food, lively atmosphere Cons: Extreme service delays, kitchen staff not able to keep up? more

avoid the place 6/26/2006

It's too bad because the food was pretty good. When I got the bill I gave our waiter my credit card and off he went. He came back with someone elses check paid on my credit card. He went away and came back saying that he deleted the entry and I signed the receipt (the correct one). Because the service was so bad I checked my account the next day. I was charged twice and neither was my bill. I called and asked to speak to the manager and I explained the problem, I was told he would call me after 6:00 that evening. Never got the call. Two days later I called again, was again told that the manager would call me after 6, I told them I heard that one before and if I didn't get a return call I would cancel both charges and they could look for me. I never got the call. I canceled the charges. I expect they will call me but maybe they are so disorganized that they won't get that together either. Pros: food was ok Cons: service, charged twice on credit card and neither was correct more

Going back for more, dreaming of ceviche... 6/22/2006

Our server was attentive, the ambiance was warm and hip at the same time, as the space is decked out in deep red with brick walls. Cons: More tortilla chips w/ the ceviche! more

Forgettable Food + Horrible Service = STAY AWAY! 6/22/2006

Friends and I decided to give Ole Ole a try since we are all fans of tapas. We should have known we were in for a truly memorable experience when we ordered a pitcher of margaritas and the server just sets everything in front of us, without even pouring the first round. After the first course was brought out, mediocre shrimp cocktail and forgettable gazpacho, we waited another hour before the manager came over to see if everything was alright. When we explained that we have over an hour for the rest of the food and he assured us he would check on the situation. By this time we were livid at the lack of communication explaining why our food was taking so long, the manager returns, without explanation or apologies, saying ""your food will be right out."" We decide that if the food was not out within 15 minutes we were just going to leave. Fifteen minutes came and still no food. We asked the server to bring us the bill and that we no longer wished to eat the food that in an hour and half had not arrived. We were met with ""Are you serious?"" It is disappointing that this situation was not handled better. Pros: Nothing Cons: Service, Food, Service more

Great Friday night experience 5/30/2006

My husband and I really enjoyed this happening, spirited restaurant. The mojitos and sangria were excellent, as was the grilled calamari and empanadas. I also had the chile rellenos, which were very good and we shared a delicious salad [2nd listed under salads]. The service was top notch and the atmosphere was lively and festive but not too loud. The other aspect of this restaurant I appreciate is the size - not too large and a nice size bar area. Definitely recommended! Reasonably priced. more

Should have listened to our friends 5/20/2006

Friends tried Ole Ole, and warned us that things were so bad their dinner was comped. We decided to try anyway. First off, order a beer -- watching the bartender make drinks at the bar was a enough to turn us away from mixed drinks permanently. As for service, if I had to guess, I'd say they have a rule that they'll give you a job ONLY if you've never waited tables before. It's not that they don't try -- it's that they don't know what they're doing. The food? Honestly don't remember -- take that for what it's worth. If they ever get their act together, this could be a fun place. Pros: decor Cons: service more
