Robert Half is like the Walmart of search firms. Avoid them, like I avoid Walmart...I am 26 years old and still haven't stepped inside a Walmart and will never work with this firm ever again!
Granted I have a bit of discourage worker syndrome, based on personal experience the personnel within OfficeTeam San Francisco help facilitate this state of existence. My initial encounter with them in early 2008, after graduation was anything but positive. Finally having graduated from college, doing internships, working my way through school..I was ready for the big leagues.
Going in, I was teamed up with their shark of the week. I don't think she works there anymore and I won't mention names, to be fair, but she told me that I was not employable. Maybe she was having a bad week or frustrated that she was getting recent graduates when the labor market was demanding 20 years of experience plus an advanced degree from Harvard to work the front desk at some ubiquitous start up in the shadowy depths of SOMA.
After nearly two years having passed by, I decided to give them another shot last month. My resume has grown and so have I. It could be assumed, based upon my experience explicitly described in my resume that I have strong excel skills and extensive experience with Microsoft applications; as they are one of the largest human labor exploiters on the planet, they do not pay close attention to detail and made me take those tests. It upset me because they scheduled me for an appointment at 1PM, I got there, they threw a bunch of paperwork at me to sign, didn't even ask if I wanted some water. After, I had to go up to the receptionist, give him my paperwork, then he informed me that I need to take these of tests, which I scored high on the first time and should still be on file. This made me feel as if I was just a number to them and showed me that they really don't value the time of individuals allowing them the privilege to represent them in the labor market. The whole experience was demoralizing and impersonal. Anyhow, Half way through my excel exam, I realized that these people are sharks and that I would prefer not to work with them. I walked out, told the receptionist that I didn't have time for this shit and pointed out that it was nearly 2PM and my appointment to see someone was at 1. Some woman with a Harley Davidson necklace walked out - can we say 'white trash,' and informed me that she wasn't going to be able to work with me. She also wasn't too nice.
After having spent nearly two years working with people like this in a shitty job market, I have come to the realization that they are in a position to treat qualified people, like myself, like hogs on a farm or workers in a maliquadoran factory.
They are the ones representing workers in obtaining employment. They act as if you are representing them. The reality of the situation is that there are many other businesses people can go to in order to find contract or direct hire employment opportunities.
While they probably receive thousands of resumes, as the unemployment rate is very high and will probably continue to rise, their attitude towards workers will probably not improve. This is why I say they can go to hell, as they contribute the skilled labor market's current race to the bottom condition.
Legislation should be enacted to cap the margin they make off of people. They drive the price of labor firms have to pay in an upward direction, also known as the wage, by acting as an intermediary between firms and consumers, then they create a fake market rate wage, which is what they pay you. I won't use real numbers, as I do not want to provide false information, but the way they make is living is through a basic exploitation of human labor. This firms and firms like it are an inefficiency in the labor market that should be regulated.
