Outstanding, simple food 10/15/2011

I've had two of my favorite meals ever here. It's not a fussy (or long) menu but everything I've tried has been perfect. Fresh ingredients, simple preparations, stunning results. more

Lovely, comfortable food 8/17/2010

I've had brunch here at couple of times and every time it's been great. The food is delicious, comforting and worth every cent. The ingredients taste fresh and are richly flavorful. I loved my eggs with polenta dish, which was a creamy, dreamy bowl of love, as well as as on another visit, when I tried poached eggs with potatoes and brisket - another winner in all its rich, supple goodness. Coffee's also great with plenty of refills, and the service is always friendly and that perfect balance of quick without being rushed and attentive without being overbearing. The cornbread with sweet onion yogurt is SUPER good, and the biscuits with fresh jam are also a nice starter. So far, so good Northern Spy! I've also been eying the chicken thigh sandwich with poached egg and chimichurri, which seems to be popular - guess I'll be getting it this week! more

Unpretentious, Country Dining 4/27/2010

Northern Spy was everything I thought it would be; warm, inviting, unpretentious, delicious and very affordable. Best of all, the restaurant thrives on the sustainable concept and source its sustainable, artisan ingredients from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. I loved the d?cor ? we sat on blue park benches and dined on wooden tables. There are shelves of condiments and preserves for sale at the back of the restaurant that added to its market-like charm. Since it was a Sunday, I ordered the Sunday Supper menu, which at $20 was easily the best Sunday dinner deal in the city. My dining companion had picked hard boiled eggs to start, the Spinach Salad, which was really delicious esp with the country ham and poached egg, and then Fleisher?s pastured pork as an entr?e, which was clearly a winner. The Sunday menu changes every week; I had a yummy celery salad with croquettes to start, then the braised coq-vin chicken with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy (a tad bit too dry for my taste), and finally the best raisin bread pudding I?ve ever had, so much so that I finished the entire dessert by myself!! I am dying to return for the Chicken and Poached Egg sandwich that I?ve heard so much about! I also want to try the Kale salad next. Pros: Price Point, Cozy Decor, Sustainable and Creative Dishes Cons: Chicken more

Amazingly Organic 1/21/2010

I am no Organic Food fan and the first time I heard of this place, I thought to myself, ""This is another organic restaurant that is going to serve plain and pricey food."" However, this place really serves up amazingly organic dishes and I was pleasantly satisfied. The restaurant is very cozy and kind of small but intimate. They serve simple menu but it offers great locally grown food. I ordered the Country Ham Sandwich with a side of sauteed potato. The sandwich comes with a pickle and the sandwich itself is a panini. I was not stuffed but definitely satisfied. I have to say the pickle is excellent; it is crisp, sour and really refreshing. The sandwich is made just perfect. Panini is toasted crispy outside and chewy inside; the country ham mixed with vegetable is light yet savory. The potato also has a great herbal flavor to it. Other than cooked dishes, the restaurant is also stocked with local grocery such as jams, peanut butter, eggs, juice, and other items. They all look so tempting! I plan on coming back for their famous brunch menu. Pros: EXcellent local organic cuisine Cons: Doesn't take reservation more
