Northern Spy was everything I thought it would be; warm, inviting, unpretentious, delicious and very affordable. Best of all, the restaurant thrives on the sustainable concept and source its sustainable, artisan ingredients from the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. I loved the d?cor ? we sat on blue park benches and dined on wooden tables. There are shelves of condiments and preserves for sale at the back of the restaurant that added to its market-like charm.
Since it was a Sunday, I ordered the Sunday Supper menu, which at $20 was easily the best Sunday dinner deal in the city. My dining companion had picked hard boiled eggs to start, the Spinach Salad, which was really delicious esp with the country ham and poached egg, and then Fleisher?s pastured pork as an entr?e, which was clearly a winner.
The Sunday menu changes every week; I had a yummy celery salad with croquettes to start, then the braised coq-vin chicken with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy (a tad bit too dry for my taste), and finally the best raisin bread pudding I?ve ever had, so much so that I finished the entire dessert by myself!!
I am dying to return for the Chicken and Poached Egg sandwich that I?ve heard so much about! I also want to try the Kale salad next.
