I haven't been to 'No Name' in Boston since the mid '80s when I worked for Digital Equipment. Today my wife and I were watching 'The Best Places I've Eaten' on Travel Channel. My ...

This is the place to go if you want to fill your stomach and don't want to pay too much for it. The food is slightly less than fair. This was all the rage when I was a kid, but ce...

tourist trap 4/12/2008

i had a fried seafood platter (or something to the like) and all i got was a bunch of stale, chopped ends of so-called ""seafood"" which i can barely taste coz it's all smothered in that thick oily batter. what exactly do we go there for, just to watch the airplanes come and go?\r :) \r Pros: seaview w/endless airplanes going up and down Cons: enjoying the view w/a fried plate of cr*p more

'No Name' no way!! 4/7/2008

This was awful. The poeple who give the No Name a thumbs up must not know any better? Seriously, we walked in and were immediately greeted with ""Go upstairs""!! Our waiter was rude, very rude to the table next to us, forgot our chowder. How do you forget that? The food was horrible. When I finally got my chowder I realized I had made a mistake...I should have never reminded him that he had forgotten it!!!!! Pros: Didn't spend a lot!! Cons: Waste of time... more

A place to go for simply cooked broiled fish 4/1/2008

One Sunday morning, I surfed the Internet for a brunch place, stumbled across a restaurant called No Name, and decided to find out if its name is plainly humble or pretentious. It turned out that the restaurant, situated on 15 Fish Pier in Boston, offers nothing but plenty of fresh seafood. \r \r Although seemingly taking pride in their fresh food, the No Name Restaurant has absolutely no attitude at all. Old and rundown, the place is far from fancy. As my friend and I arrived at one in the afternoon, the restaurant was nearly packed. But we did not experience too much waiting. \r \r No sooner than we sat down did a middle-aged waitress deliver a plate of garlic bread and hand us menus. The small menu shows they tightly specialize on food from the sea, ranging from broiled scrod to broiled scallops. Oh, don't forget steamed lobsters. Compared to other seafood places, their prices are quite reasonable. Less than $12 do they charge for broiled fish alone. \r \r I had broiled bluefish, my company broiled seafood platter. The atmosphere was casual and the service was efficient. In ten minutes, the entrees arrived in our table. The main dish beat the side dishes --- french fries and coleslaw --- in delivery as well as deliciousness. \r \r The broiled bluefish dish, served in a stainless steel plate, contains two bluefish fillets with a wedge of lime. The dish looks simple but proves one thing: freshness is the best ingredient. Next time I go back there, I want to bring my friend who is a vegetarian and loves fish. \r \r \r Pros: cheap fish, fresh Cons: mediocre side dishes such as fresh fries more

Seafood was fresh and hot. But definitely nothing to write home about. 3/20/2008

I'm not sure how they were voted in as a ""Best Place to Eat"" in 2007. Location is a back alley warehouse. Paper cups and a pitcher of water sit on each table when you come in so that you can help yourself. I probably wouldn't go back Pros: fresh seafood Cons: very low budget, country look more

Big Disapointment 12/7/2007

I had my boyfriend take me here for my birthday because I read misleading reviews. The clam chowder should have been called fish chowder. It had absolutely NO flavor. The seafood plate was basic served with fries, definitely nothing to brag about. Not even a good selection on alcoholic beverages. Pros: parking Cons: food, ambience, service more

Best meal, warm friendly atmosphere, hilarious waiters, prompt service, cheap prices 11/5/2007

We went to the No Name after a long day of shopping. The chowder was warm and delicious, plenty filling. The scallops and scrod were delicious. No wait, prompt service. The food was hot, not like some restaurants where by the time you get it, the food is warm at most. Have recommended it to friends, will definitely go again. Waiters are funny, make the night a good time for all. Unlike other reviewers, while there I encountered no waiters that did not speak english, they may have had an accent, but we are from Boston, who are we to say anything about the way someone talks, =0). Excellent time at the No Name. Pros: Fast service, cheap meals, delicious food. Cons: couldn't find any when I was there. more

No Name = NEVER AGAIN !!!! EVER! 10/25/2007

Wow! It can't believe that I had to give this restaurant even one star for this review (no stars is well-deserved and one star is an over-rating). The other negative reviews are all spot on and I can't remember a worse restaurant experience in any other city in the US. I should've known it wasn't going to be good when I saw all of the available parking when walking through the Seaport area on a Thursday night at 6 PM. The stairway to the dining room smelled like decaying fish, instantly spoiling even the boldest appetite. The seafood chowder was not edible and the broiled swordfish and scallops were poorly cooked, favorless, and greasy -- not worth the $14/plate price charged. Overall, this restaurant's performance was inconsistent with the favorable press and reviews in print and TV media. I want to give the food back to No Name (by vomitting), so that I can get my appetite back and room for a decent meal. Pros: I'm still alive Cons: That I can't turn back time and not go there more

Boston at it's WORST!!!! 10/23/2007

Boston has some great seafood establishments, but this is not one of them!!! \r \r The fish is fried and all tastes the same. I could have defrosted some frozen fish sticks and it would have tasted the same. The ambience is non-existent. Water served in paper cups???? Dinners served at different times??? Waitress that could not speak English????? Not for me. One, big loud open room with tour busses lined up in front and full of unsuspecting tourists (like me). Both my son and I became violently ill in the middle of the night and both believe it was the tarter sauce (it looked suspect.....we shouldn't have tried it).\r \r Do yourself and Boston a BIG favor and try one of the hundreds of other, good choices when in Boston. Pros: it was cheap Cons: food, service and ambience are terrible more

JUST BUY A FRY DADDY & DO IT YOURSELF 10/6/2007

EVERYTHING fried!!! You can get fish broiled but it looks like very few people choose that option.\r \r The ambience is horrendous....it's an open room with old tables and the most blue collar feel you can imagine. That would've been fine if the food was edible.\r \r I went with a group of 5 people....not 1 person enjoyed their food. There are no sauces or spices....NO IMAGINATION....just BLAND BLAND fish that tastes like Gortons on sale for $2.99 at the Shoprite.\r \r Fried Calamari.....awful. Save the fat and calories for 10x better on Hanover Street. Soup......bad!\r \r SO MANY BETTER OPTIONS...do NOT listen to any hype.....this is BRUTALLY BAD FOOD!! Pros: I didn't die Cons: I'm still alive and have to remember this experience more

A True Boston Icon that I believe is the best.... 12/8/2006

Wow! I was curious to see what type of ratings the No Name got.... And very surprised to see some of the negative ones.... Well I am a native New Englander and have been going to the No Name for around 30 years. I love this place..... So many people are looking for appearances... To me, this is the real thing. Great seafood, simple, basic, served the same way for at least 30 years that I know of..... The No Name Restaurant is beautiful because of the simplicity and the way they have not changed for so long. I can't ever remember a bad meal at the No Name... I have many great family memories. Where else can you wait outside in a line in the middle of February and have hot chocolate while you wait to get seated. The service staff are generally quite nice and sometimes you get a real character.\r \r The main reason I keep going to the No Name is because the seafood is EXCELLENT! Maybe some of the people that wrote a bad review, should try it again. I have been a server in a restaurant and if you have a problem with the food, let them know. Even the best restaurants serve a bad meal once in a while.\r \r The bottom line for me.... If you want a great seafood meal without a fancy atmosphere, without $100 bottles of wine.... the NO Name is the place to go.... It is down to earth, friendly, the food is consistently excellent and the people that go there are down to earth.\r \r The No Name is a fun place and I wish there were more restaurants with some character just like it....\r \r The No Name is Unique and I will return..... I felt that I should write this review after seeing the negative comments.... Maybe some people cant handle the essence exuded by the No Name Restaurant..... Pros: Excellent Food, Great Location, low keyed, fun, a true Boston Icon Cons: I've never seen any Cons at the No Name, but if they were there, I could've missed them more

Lowest of Low in Boston 12/8/2006

So I have lived in Boston for about 2 years now and live in the seaport district. Everyone told me how great No Name restaurant is and cheap it is...and all the works. So, my wife and I decided to go and there was a line out the door (so it had to be good, right?) When you get a seat, they rush you off to the large rows of tables (very communal..reminded me of eating in italy)......the menu is no frills fish, fish, fish, shrimp, lobster, grilled, baked, poached. I got the seafood chowder and scrod.....oh my god horrible! No salt! I had to ask the people next to me and they said the same thing (maybe an off night for the cooks). The soup tasted like cx broth with a whole bunch of tough ocean fare....horrible. The food came and my fish was okay but again, NO SALT, NO PEPPER, NO SEASONING....I know its no frills but for the love of Julie Childs add some damn salt. The final kicker in this was the pricing....I don't know about you but for the quality of food they are offering, the no frills B-S, $65 bones for 2 heinkens and some really bad food is not my idea of cheap. Save the money got to LTK (Legal Test Kitchen, kitty corner from it at park lane apartments) much better food and cheaper prices than No Name. \r If your an old fisherman type, like roughing it, prefer bland food...then you'd be ideal for this place.\r If your the person that values fine food and fine wine...save yourself from the trouble....and don't go to No Name restaurant. \r \r more

Gives Average a Bad Name 8/15/2006

Traveling to Boston only occasionally, I cherish the opportunity for some great seafood. Went to FoodNetwork and came across the No Name Restaurant. Well reviewed, I looked forward to the occasion. Service was fast and efficient (we went early), but the food was, well average - and not hot at that. Pretty disappointing and makes me question the credibility of reviews from the FoodNetwork site. Pros: Fast courteous service, great location Cons: Unimaginitive food preparation, food quality only average overall, would not return more

tourist trap 7/26/2006

the poor tourists (and locals) that get duped into thinking this place is any good. when boston harbor was cleaned up, they took what was dredged up, and used that. this place is horrible. Pros: easy to get a seat Cons: everything else is bad more

Huge Disappointment 5/1/2006

We were told that this was the best place for seafood in Boston. It turned out to be the worst part of our visit. The service was so-so but the food turned out to be horrible. The lobster and shrimp were overcooked and the chowder was greasy. The price was too high for the service and bad food we received. We will never return and we will tell others to not to try it. This is the only time I have ever felt compelled to write a review for anything. Cons: bad food, sloppy service more

Classic Boston Seafood Dive - Better than ever 4/22/2006

I've been going to the no name for over 10 years. The seafood served in a Salty Dog, Nautical Dive is probably the best bargain you're going to find in Boston. The Seafood Chowder is absolutely stellar and the Baked Scrod is the best I ever had anywhere. They make a pretty good whole belly clam roll too! Sadly I found out there are some people who are attempting to bad mouth the No Name for reasons that I specifically won't go into. Let's just say that the No Name is located in a Prime Spot on Boston Harbor. A restaurant cannot survive for decades just based on it's past reputation alone, the No Name survives because of it's past, current and hopefully future reputation for excellent quality fresh seafood. more

Freshest Lobster & Seafood! 2/8/2006

A very cozy family type, great home-cooking restaurant that only serves the best for its ""family"" Pros: Fresh food, Great value, friendly atmosphere Cons: a bit crowded more

Big disappointment after hype 1/7/2006

Terrible service (I think the buser served us)... messed up order, food cold, no refills. Had to chase down waitstaff twice. Food was fresh out of some can perhaps. Very chewy & not hot. I went here for the first time with friends that came in for my wedding. I felt so bad that this is what they got from one of Boston's ""top seafood resturants""... I've always been disappointed in myself for us paying for our meals that day when we should of walked out the door not paying.. I'm sure it happens often! more

Do not eat here unless you enjoy bad food... 7/28/2005

I like many other Bostonians over the years have heard about the ""No Name"", well, last night after day 1 of my girlfriend taking the BAR exam I walked down there to take her for a bite. The broiled scallops were as rubbery as a Michelin tire and the sauteed seafood consisted of frozen shrimp, calimari , scallops and vegetables (the kind of veggies you got at Friendly's in 1974, carrott rounds with the fancy fork cuts on the edge-yummy) cooked in about a 1/2 pound of butter. I am not a picky eater, ask anyone. Fact is, this was probably hands down the worst dinner I have ever had in my life. We both mustered about 2 bites and asked for the check, thanks to the waiter for only charging us for the 1 beer. I was astonished that this place is in business, let alone attract customers whatsover. more

Great Value 7/21/2005

No Name is cheap and has incredibly fresh fish. Order it baked, fresh fish needs nothing else. Pros: Great Seafood, Cheap Cons: Touristy more

User review by beentheredonethatsd 7/11/2005

We saw this restaurant on City Search, which we use all the time in our travels. We were very disappointed. The food .....well let's put it this way, it ain't no Long John Silvers. There is no atmosphere, no nothing. We can't say anything good about this restaurant. And it truly breaks my heart, because I was raised in Boston. This is one of the worst reataurant we've every eaten in. Pros: good parking Cons: no atmosphere, mediocre food, mediocre service more
