My 2nd Home 4/29/2009

I have been going to Niagara for over 10 years... I love this bar during the week - mainly locals (like me). The weekend crowd is a little different (but what bar isn't different on weekends?!?). Pros: Strong Drinks, Super Cute Bartenders (girls and guys), Music more

Another NYC favorite that lost it's charm.... 3/17/2009

Another bar which used to be a favorite which now turned into something i cant recognize anymore. Pros: location, multiple rooms, dance floor Cons: music, crowd more

ATTRACTIVE BARTENDERS 9/15/2008

This is my favorite East Village spot, located on the corner of Avenue A and 7th Street it truly is one of the best intersections in NYC. The bartenders are chill, especially the ladies. They know their stuff; drinks, how to build a log cabin, marching band anthems, horror movies, the list goes on and on. They are definitely as random as the clientele and way more fun to talk to. If I had to describe them in 3 words --intelligent, charismatic, and HOT!! I guess 2 of them are sisters but I can't figure out which ones. It's great to enjoy cheap drinks during happy hour while watching the people pass by from the giant front windows as the sun goes down over thompkins square park. They also have a fun art show on Thursdays in the downstairs, a lot of eclectic artist types reminiscent of ""Old New York"". Pros: Pizza Shop next door, good service Cons: not so much more

Class. 10/9/2007

Being from England we generally know a good bar when we see one. This place has a great attitude and I think a few people may have misunderstood the bar staff who's patter is class but sarcastic at times. Great music, happy hour and thanks to the bar woman who took us for a night out around the East Village to the Toy Factory? Pros: Very Good... Cons: Very Few... more

Great Spot! 9/11/2007

Great east village bar. Crowd was really cool and the drinks were great! Location was very easy to get to with a lot of surrounding things to do. The owner of the bar was very kind and receptive to everyone who entered his door. Will definitely be going back! Pros: Great crowd on the weekdays Cons: Too busy on weekends more

Best worst bar ever 7/19/2007

I have never seen a bar so full of Jersey kids! I had a great time downstairs dancing to the tunes and making fun of people, until the go-go dancer left (HOT tattood woman ... and she could shake it!) and they started playing hard core hip-hop. I'd love it generally, but somehow I couldn't stomach watching all those suburban white girls trying to grind up on their dudes to music from the 'hood. I'll probably go back... the crowd is just too funny for words, and there are far too few places to go dancing in the city without paying a cover. And what could be better than a joint where you can break it down without caring what the person next you thinks? Plus, the drinks are strong. Pros: Amusing crowd, good dancing before it gets crowded, strong drinks Cons: Annoying crowd, gets crowded more

rude bartender 7/10/2007

My friends and I stopped at Niagra Bar on our way downtown to the lower east side... we wanted to stop and just have a drink. It was early in the evening and not very crowded. We made our way to the bar to the last three stools at the end. Within getting our drinks, the bartender asked for our IDs again (clearly for some reason did not trust his own bouncer who is paid to check IDs) and said ""I don't mind if you don't tip, but you would MIND moving out of the best seats in the house right (clearly the end seats are the best) ""He then proceeded to keep checking his cell as if someone important was going to call...If he waited maybe 2 minutes or another drink he would've gotten a well deserved tip; instead we downed our drinks and left. I dont' care if this man was the owner/bartender for the night; any good buisness person should know that they need to treat a paying customer with some respect and courteous behavior. No one needs to have their mood ruined even more by someone they're paying at an establishment they chose to walk into. Needless to say I'm never going there again. more

Not worth it... 1/10/2007

Went downstairs to an overcrowded mess of people. After a while my friends and i went to the bathroom leaving one friend with our stuff. When we tried to go back down the overamped bouncer on a powertrip wouldn't let us, saying that it was too crowded. So one of my friends asked to go down to get our ONE friend that was down there, he STILL wouldn't let her! We literally had to argue with him for 10 minutes before he let her go down, JUST to get our other friend and bring her back upstairs. When she did go down, i heard the bouncer call her a b@#!h and a c*#!t....real classy. That pretty much ruined our experience. Can't say i'll ever go there again. Pros: none that i can think of... Cons: overcrowded, RUDE, inappropriate bouncers more

Go back to Jersey 11/21/2006

Had to stand in line in front of Niagara this Saturday to meet people for a friend's birthday inside. In line were drunk frat boy types and loud jersey girls, not fun companions when you haven't had a drink yet. Once we were finally inside, we squeezed through the packed bar to get to the back, where more jersey girls gave me the once over glare. I felt like I was in high school. Downstairs was worse - dated music and white dorky boys trying to dance. After a few drinks though, I didn't care - so wound up making the best of a bad situation and having fun anyway. P.S. The pole dancer gets an A for effort. Pros: Coat check is $2. Cons: Crowd, Music that was popular 5 years ago more

fun place, not the nicest bartenders 11/19/2006

i've been going to Niagara for a few years now and have always enjoyed it. i like the music and think the crowd is usually pretty good - not too hipster or pretentious. bartenders know their stuff, although they tend to be unfriendly. a smile and/or eye contact shouldn't be the hardest thing. the bands are usually good and while i can't remember the name off hand, the band that the owner is actually part of plays every once in a while and is defintiely worth seeing. more

Arrogance.... 11/18/2006

Used to be a great local hangout! I spent many a night drinking the night away in this spot.... HOWEVER!... Now you'll be happy to find over-amped bouncers, over crowded bridge-and-tunnel attendees and bathrooms that rival the boys locker room in a mid-west truck stop (urine drip and all). If I want a dive bar with over-rated attitude, then I'd go to Max Fish! At least they don't feel the need to front on their image! more

Avoid Saturday Nights 6/15/2006

East Village spot usually know for it's unique play lists and eccentric crowd. Go downstairs for letter known 80's and rock music on Fridays. Unique music went from weekends to fridays to let's hear some mainstream hip hop, hopefully this is a string of bad decisions and not a glimpse of what is in the future for this what was once an underrated east village abode. Pros: Space, Atmosphere Cons: Crowd more

User review by littlebella25 1/27/2006

a little bit crowded but there was no cover and a coat check which is always a plus. once i got a few drinks in me we were dancing like crazy--they played some GREAT songs. everytime we were about to leave a song we loevd came on! one thing though, used the photobooth and our photos never came out!!:( Pros: great music, some cute guys, no cover Cons: small, photobooth ate our $$ more

Better the second time around 9/5/2005

Went to this bar for the 2nd time on Saturday. The first time I was there, I had a horrible time...I did not like the atmosphere and was bored. The 2nd time, I discovered the downstairs and had a blast. I loved the music, the atmosphere, and the people. The music was a mixture of rock and well, rock. I think I heard one hip hop song that particular night. I danced to everything and anything that DJ put on. I agree with the other reviewers, this is a good place to hook up even if you are not looking to do that. Pros: Good music, Young & fun crowd more

Back that thang up 4/17/2005

People are pretty right about this place. The front is crowded, try to get a table up towards the back, you will see everything that walks in and by since you are up a level and it's on the way to downstairs. Downstairs was alright, the girl on the pole was nothing special to look at, but it is a fun scene....music was BLASTING. HUH!? WHAT?....yea don't try talking to people don't there. If your game is that you have no game, you could pull some girls at this place. It's laid back.....as most east village places are. Mid 20's crowd on Sat nite when I was there at 1:30. Pros: All Access Views Cons: Drink wait more

Booty bar, yes, but irresistable! 11/7/2004

Although this bar is definitely all about the booty, you can't help but be drawn back into its doors time and time again. My friends and I joke that this bar has some sort of spell cast on the city. Every time I enter, I always have an interesting night! Meat packing tendencies will guarantee cute girls free drinks and probably some pretty heavy hook-ups. Don't try to resist the temptation- Niagra is a habit worth keeping! Pros: Single-scene, Great music, Dancing Cons: , Crowded, Unwanted Overtures more

Great bar, but lets get a new DJ 11/26/2002

Great fun bar to meet up with friends and find new ones. Dancing is fun, but let's ditch the 80's for one weekend, unless I'm coincidentally going to 80's nite all the time. Bartender's are polite and drinks are reasonable. They still don't know how to make a side car, but can make a damn fine lemon drop shot. Crowded with a decent looking crowd, hasn't yuppified too much yet. Pros: crowd Cons: crowded more

Very Decent Place 10/24/2002

This was a very decent neighborhood bar. Probably one of the most reasonably priced happy hours in the tri-state area. Very attractive interior, the downstairs has a tropical theme to it and can be rented out for private parties. I only had wine that evening, so I can't really comment on the drinks, but the gal who was the bartender on Tuesday was very nice and polite. I would go go back again if I am in the area. Pros: Happy Hour, Private Parties, Nice decor Cons: Location - really, just a neighborhood, bar more

SLEEK 7/31/2002

I used to go to Niagara a lot. Niagara itself is a cool bar except you better get there in time to grab a table/booth in the back room. If not you are stuck in the very narrow bar area. You do have a choice in going down to the tiki room but there is a charge of i think $10? Overall, cool bar but too narrow in the front. it's a nightmare trying to get a drink. OH, and the music is usually really good. more
