I always judge a sushi restaurant by the quality of their salmon sashimi and New Tokyo is by far the best I've found in my neighborhood. The service is great and they always deliver really quickly (normally 30 minutes instead of an hour). Highly recommend! more

Delicious sushi!!! 3/29/2009

Excellent sushi! Reasonable prices! Good service. Nice atmosphere Relaxing music. BYOB I am a huge sushi/sashimi lover, and New Tokyo has been my favorite place for the past 4 years! I've tried many different places in Lakeview/Lincoln area for sushi, yet I keep coming back to my neighborhoody New Tokyo. Can't help it! Too good to pass... Spicy Sake Crunch, Spicy Tekka - Mmmmmm!!!!!... Picking up some sushi on my way home..... :) Pros: THE BEST SUSHI ever!!! Better than Rise, etc... Cons: A little too small space. more

The most amazing Sushi in Chicago! I love this place and whenever I go any place else, I regret it. I recently got into Japanese food and this place is where it's at. It's less expensive than most places and has much better food. Mmmmm, I am ordering right now! more

Great maki(rolls) in Chicago!! 8/29/2008

I stop by at this place many times and never get upset with the food. They have the best sweet potato roll, spicy unagi roll, red spider, and so on. If you have time, I would recommend you to eat at this place, but if you want rush food, I won?t recommend you to go there. The food service is kind of slow during peak time. more

Do not go to this place! 8/5/2008

Do not go to this place. Customer Service is an unknown concept here. The hostess treated us very badly as she was not happy with a 15% tip. I could not believe that she would question a 15% tip and behave so badly with a regular customer. The food is average and ambiance is well below average. They run a membership program where they give you a discount on future visits. But, they expect you to pay that discount back as tip or else you are in for a showdown .... more

Amazing Teriyaki 6/12/2007

So yeah this place might advertise to have great sushi, and I love their sushi but really their teriyaki dishes is where its at. They have the best teriyaki in the city, I love their chicken teriyaki (ask for white meat) and the seafood teriyaki. However, lately they've been skimping on the portions and it is kind of pricey. The best deal is to get a bento box combo and you get a teriyaki of your choice, salad, miso soup, cali roll, one tuna, one salmon and one shrimp roll. I suggest getting pick up or delivery since the dine in is pretty limited and the tables are really crammed into a small space. The service is not the best but the food is great! more

slow service 8/26/2006

This is a good sushi restaurant, but has slow service, it would take 15-20 mins for your food to come. The restaurant is small, tables are so close together, we felt so cramped. If they can improve length of time you have to wait for food and if they can expand a little bit more, i would recommend this place. but not until then, there are other great sushi restaurants in chicago that has good food and fast service. Cons: slow service more

Found an insect in our food! 7/30/2006

My husband and I have been to this place many times and have always been satisfied but after our last experience we will NEVER return to New Tokyo . We literally found a dead pest in our sushi . We informed the waitress and she removed the plate with the creature and expected us to continue to dine . Needless to say, we were so put off we just got up and left . What a huge disappointment. Cons: dead stuff in your food more

Cheap, good sushi...ok service 7/25/2006

I thought this place was very inexpensive, plus its BYOB with no corkage fee...you cant beat it. It was packed when I went there, not an open table available. The service was not very good but I wasnt in a hurry so it didnt matter. I loved the food and the price was definitely right. I will definitely go back. Its not amazing but definitely worth a cheap night out. Pros: Cheap, BYOB no corkage, lots of selection Cons: poor service more

stay away from this place! 7/16/2006

Poor quality of sushi, poor service and expensive- nothing good to say! With so many other great sushi selections in this neighborhhod, there is no reason to waste your money here. more

Marketing 12/27/2005

I love this place, it is located in the heart of boystown, in a very small store front. There are only about 10 tables in the restaurant and if you don't like sitting close to your neighbor then this might not be the place for you. The food is incredible, I love the variety of rolls and the size. The rolls come in portions that you are not overwhelmed by the size when you put them in your mouth. The best part part about the restaurant is that is very inexpensive, two people can eat and be satisfied for about $20. It is also byob so you are welcome to bring wine or beer. I love this place and will continue to send my friends. Pros: inexpensive, byob, great food Cons: no parking more

Messy Take Out, Good Food 1/15/2003

Don't take your to go without first checking the contents, but eating in is not too bad. Matsuya's is still a better choice if it's more convenient to go there. Pros: Just Good Sushi Cons: Small, Slow Service, Messed up Takeout more

fresh, cheap, but rice..... 12/8/2002

The fish is fresh, the price is good, but the rice needs improvement!!! The rice on both the pieces and the rolls are too sticky and falls apart easily, also not chilled enough. The maki also needs improvement, they're unprofessionally cut. I think the sushi chefs are actually Japanese. Best thing about New Tokyo is price: $1.55/piece for salmon, tuna, red snapper, mackerel.... $1.75 for hamachi, scallop, unagi... more

Good sushi standard 11/21/2002

This is a great location for a reliable sushi experience. Grab a bottle of wine and order the Chicago Sushi. It comes with plenty of sushi and rolls, as well as a bowl of miso. It's a small location and tends to fill up fast, but that's why the location is so great. You can always keep on walking if you don't feel like waiting. Pros: BYOB, location, good food Cons: small location more

WOW! I LOVE THIS PLACE! 8/18/2002

I stumbled onto this place by accident and am glad I did. The sushi was very fresh, the service good, and the restaurant very cozy. It was an excellent place to take a date or eat by yourself. I've never been more satisfied with the food served and will make this my new regular sushi hangout. more
