As a teacher, I was excited that the planetarium was finally opening up again. But when I went to see a show recently it seemed schizophrenic and disjointed. The long introduction was too jarring for young students and the cartoon section was too immature for older students. I am concerned that whoever chose the programming doesn't know their audience or hasn't consulted educators or parents.
To make matters worse, when I was at the teachers' convention in Atlantic City this year the planetarium was handing out what seemed like hundreds of magnets and backpacks with a glaring mistake...the text read "Teacher's (followed by a heart symbol meaning "love") the New Jersey State Museum Planetarium"...even my 5th grade students know that teachers should not have been possessive. When I pointed out the error, the woman didn't seem to care.
So, I am left wondering, what is going on and who is letting these mistakes pass by?
