Nowhere else like it! 10/14/2010

There is absolutely no other gym in Portland like this one. I've been to martial arts gyms and they are usually stinky and you're afraid that you'll pick up a critter from the mats. I go to Nemesis for the monthly women's self defense class and it's a lot of fun. The location is really convenient and the big windows in the gym let in lots of natural light. The guys let you beat them up and you learn some really useful moves. It's also a great workout (some of those guys are big!). I'd love it if the class happened more often but maybe I just need to get my butt on the mat for real. more

Great womens self defense! 8/10/2010

I love this gym! The instructors are really helpful and make learning self defense fun and completely useable in practical application. I had such a great time testing out the techniques on the ""volunteers"". The mats and gym are really clean(big deal for me), and I cant wait for the next class. I never thought it would be so fun, it seemed like a ""guy"" sport when I originally heard about it. However, I soon realized how much women really need this type of training. Not to mention I was sore in muscles I havent been sore in before and I work out heavily 6 days a week. Im definately going back! more

Great Location, Amazing Coaching and Excellent Camradrie 7/19/2010

I originally was checking out Nemesis Jiu Jitsu because of the great location. I live and work downtown and this is I think the only jiu jitsu school on the West Side and located downtown. The school is right across the street from PGE Park and just across the Street from the Max Stops. This allows me to jump on the Max from work and get there in about 5 minutes.\r \r Once I began training there, I would say that a number of thing stand out to make this the best training experience that I have ever had (and I've checked out many different gyms in the PDX area).\r \r 1. Instruction: Hands down, Eric Hemphill is the best instructor that I've had the privilege of learning from. Not only does he have amazing talent (as do many of the coaches in Portland we are really lucky for a city of our size) but he as a great ability to communicate. He also has wonderful charisma and sets the tone for a friendly atmosphere and great place to roll. He really makes this somewhere you are genuinely excited to go all the time. Another unique aspect is that Eric teaches nearly all of the classes. Often times seems like gym owners may delegate teaching to lower belts and the like, but Eric keeps up a break-neck schedule so that you get to work with him nearly every time you step on the mat. \r \r 2. Facilities: Hands down most cleanly space I've had the joy of training in. The facilities are laid out great and most importanlty a ton of care goes into keeping the space sanitary and top notch. That's not always something people think about, but if you spend time in jiu jitsu you hear stories about dirty gyms and the things that come along with that. I've seen the mats cleaned twice a day always and there is a nice locker room set up with showers. \r \r 3. Atmosphere: Super friendly bunch of people training. Never dealt with ""tough guy"" attitudes or anyone that wasn't there to have a good time and looking out for each other. Eric and co. make sure that people of correct skill levels roll together and the more experience students are really open to sharing with the newer folks. Also, having dealt with screaching death metal pound your head in music, its a refreshing change to come in and feel like you've been transported to Hilo with good reggae seemingly always pumping. \r \r 4. Location: Talked about that a little above, the downtown location is great if you live or work downtown. Noon classes are great to get away from work on lunch break, train a bit, take a shower and be back for the afternoon grind with a smile on your face. Also nice for afterwork to be able to come in roll a bit then grab dinner over on 21st.\r \r 5. The workout: Used to dread going to the gym to do the same workouts day after day, but jiu jitsu is something I get excited about every day. Awesome workout that has leaned me out (lost about 20 lbs in 4 months) and just feel all around more healthy.\r \r If you get the chance I'd say take advantage of whatever promo offer they have going and come in and really give it a try. Eric and the gang provide a unique opportunity to learn a cool martial art and have a ton of fun along the way. Pros: Excellent Instruction, Great Location, Friendly Atmosphere Cons: Have too much fun and get bummed out going back to work more

Great place for anybody of all ages and skill level 7/19/2010

I first saw Nemesis when I was riding my bike past the gym on my way to Fred Meyers. I noticed everybody rolling around on the mat. Although I have never tried jiu jitsu, I have always heard about it and wanted to try it. I decided to walk in there and just check it out. \r \r I was welcomed by many friendly individuals who seemed to all enjoy training with Eric the main instructor. Everybody seemed happy, cheerful, and in good spirits. It seemed like a very warm and friendly environment. I decided to give it a shot so I attended an introductory class.\r \r I received alot of 1 on 1 attention and it seemed like I was getting a private lesson from the instructors and from the students as well. All of the instructors including the students were very helpful in providing a positive learning environment. They were very patient and helpful in pointing out my strengths and providing advice in developing my weaknesses. It became very evident that Nemesis was a great environment for creating a positive educational and intellectual experience. \r The more I attended Nemesis, the more i enjoyed myself. The students are great, and the instructors are very well informed. Nemesis really seemed like a place that fosters individual development of all skill levels including completely new students. \r \r I recommend Nemesis for all ages and skill levels including men, women, children, new, advanced, amateur, or professional. \r Pros: Warm, Friendly, Positive Learning Environment more

Great atmosphere and exercise 7/19/2010

I joined Nemesis about 5 months ago, with no prior experience with martial arts what so ever but this has been one of the best exercise and learning experience for me. The instructors are very well trained and are helpful to the beginner students such as my self. I expected a ""hard core"" sort of atmosphere from watching UFC, but most students have professional careers and it is not about the affliction t-shirts, gloating there full body tatoo's. People with different goals can join this gym whether its training for a cage fight or just for exercise and learning something new. My original intentions of joining this gym was to get in better shape, and the routine weight lifting and cardio regime was getting too boring for me. I have lost about 12lbs since I joined Nemesis. With this economy and the hard times we are all going through, this is a great escape for me to socialize and to train a valuable skill that can be used for discipline and improve my physical attributes in all aspects. You won't be a kung fu master in 1 week, but if you are up for a challenge, come check this place out! Pros: very clean, laid back atmosphere, beginner friendly Cons: Downtown parking more

Top notch kids program! 7/15/2010

My 8 and 10 year old love the youth program at Nemesis. The instructor Stuart is excellent and very experienced in teaching kids Jiu jitsu technique in a fun and interesting way. Games and just the right amount of conditioning offer kids a very balanced and fun class. I would recommend the kids program to anyone wanting to give their children the opportunity to learn self defense and get a great physical workout too. Pros: excellent instructor, fun, positive environment more

Top Level Training 7/4/2010

Nemesis is a great place to learn. Eric the head instructor is one of the only oregon Jiu-Jitsu Black belts and is a special kind of coach. He has an uncanny knack of spotting small problems with technique and a simple way of explaining and correcting any issues and has helped me get my game to the next level. Best BJJ coach I have ever had and his skills on the mat are almost hypnotic. \r \r The facility is fantastic. Awesome grappling mats and private men and womens locker rooms. Very cool, respectful vibe with the other students. \r \r I highly recommend Nemesis for someone new to grappling or a seasoned vet looking to polish thier skills. \r \r Pros: Great Facility, Great Instruction, great learning atmosphere Cons: Parking can be difficult to find more
