As a septic system owner you are responsible for ensuring that your septic system is safe and working properly. Leaking septic are a health risk to both your family and the larger community, but systems can also have more insidious effects, seeping into and contaminating groundwater supplies, and mixing with the other water supplies without us even being aware of it. Many of us are simply not aware of the risks, and are not managing these systems safely. If you system starts to smell or the toilet keeps backing up, this is often a sign that the tank is overdue for a pump out. Generally speaking, the tank needs pumping if it is more than two-thirds full of liquid effluent. How often you pump out depends on how large the tank is and how m any people use the system, check the council for guidelines and by lifting the inspection port or lid on top of the tank.
