THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! We found you from out of town and were very please with the outcome of the cake. You are the best bakery in SLC!!! We appreciate you! Performance Designed Products, Sherman Oaks, CA more

Beware: Better check what they make for you! 12/8/2011

I saw the review where they made the wrong cake for a birthday party, then told the customer they would not ""make it right"" unless they brought the cake back (right, take the cake away from 5 year olds & say, sorry!). Well, I ordered a cake for my daughter who goes to school in Salt Lake City (I now live near Atlanta). I was explicitly clear in my instructions for what I wanted. The young girl took the order down correctly, but the baker screwed it up & they made the wrong cake for my daughter's birthday. When I call back, the same girl who took the order confirmed my order correctly, but her manager said that they would only ""make it right"" if she brought back more than half the cake...! Wow, far from the Customer-friendly policy! THEY screwed up and admitted such, but their company policy is to put the burden on the Customer because they know most people won't immediately stop a party or function just to bring back a cake. So just be careful when you buy anything from this place. I'm sure the staff is friendly, I'm sure Mrs Backer is nice, but their Customer Satisfaction policies are firmly rooted in the yesteryear - a business' actions firmly reflect the attitudes & feelings of their management. Just beware if anything is not exactly to what you specified... If you just go in & buy a gingerbread cookie, you should be safe, but when instructions get any more complicated than that... more

...wow 9/12/2010

Not sure how there can be a bad review on Bakers. My mother used to go to church down the street from Bakers. Every day after church, her father and mother would meet up at bakers with her and her sister and they would buy a gingerbread cookie. Now, anytime someone is in Utah, they bring us back a bakers cake or 2 dozen gingerbread cookies. It is the best bakery. more

Okay, not great 7/2/2010

This is a good bakery. They serve basic bakery foods, cakes, cookies, eclairs, some more extreme pastries but pretty regular. I am kind of disappointed in them because I bought decorative cookies from them for a special function. And although they were adorable, they weren't very good. I feel that if you want unique interesting bakery foods you look elsewhere, but if you are looking for something that just does the trick well then Backers is the your place. more

Best Customer Service 6/27/2010

I don't know what you are talking about. Backers never yell at anybody. They have some of the best customer service of any of the stores I have gone into. I never wait more that a minute until someone is there HAPPY to see me. Mrs. Backer is a 60 year old lady. She does not go around doing all the things you say. Get a life! I commend any business that has been in this city as long as they have. They MUST be doing something right. Pros: Eclairs-apple fritters more

Glad Other Bakeries Have Opened 6/19/2010

I would never recommend Backer's Bakery to anyone, there are so many other charming bakeries in town now with people that are actually HAPPY to see you when you come through the door! I don't like going somewhere where even the owner treats you badly. The cupcakes weren't great, I know they are the trend now so Backer's has jumped on board, I don't blame them for that, but there are darling cupcake shops in town with fantastic baked goods and great employees. Cons: Overall Negative Experience more

Why are you yelling at me, I'm your customer! 6/19/2010

I used to come to Backer's as a little girl and have always had fond memories but have lived out of town for years. I came to visit Backer's Bakery for out of pure nostalgia but popped into the art gallery next store first- when I came out, I was met by Mrs. Backer herself, yelling that I was parked in HER parking lot- well I am HER customer! Or WAS, at least. It makes me sad because I held Backer's in such high regard, but I will NEVER visit there again. Cons: Mean mean mean :( more

Edible Art Beautiful Wedding Cakes! 5/19/2010

My family has been using Mrs. Backers for all our most important occasions for generations. They make the most beautiful cakes in town! The flowers are gorgeous!!! Unlike any you have ever seen. The cakes and frostings are wonderful. Including the buttercream which as you know makes the most beautiful frosting but not always the tastiest. Pros: Beautiful Cakes and Pastries more

Frowny faces and Dry Cake 4/21/2010

I have been to Mrs. Backers Bakery several times, never again. The girls behind the counter frown and seem scared, maybe of Mrs. Backer. I like the idea of bakers being ""fat and happy"" not tight lipped and snappy. With so many great bakeries in downtown Salt Lake there is no reason to have a bad customer service (and dry cake) experience at this one. Pros: Neat Old Sign outside Cons: Customer Service/Dry cake more

Very disappointed 11/13/2009

So disappointed. I've heard so much about Mrs. Backers. The service made me feel as if I were intruding into their special world. Not at all friendly. I was very disappointed by the cake. Dry and the size was also disappointing. I can't understand their reputation. Doesn't work for me. Pros: Pretentious Cons: Price/customer service more

Delicious! 10/7/2009

I went to Mrs. Backer's for the first time this week and was mightily impressed. The cherry pie was wonderful, not at all gummy as fruit pies can sometimes be, and the crust was gorgeous and the perfect texture. The Boston Cream pie was the softest, most delicate piece of cake I have ever had, with thick, fudgy frosting and just the right amount of cream filling. Everybody should go there. It's amazing. Pros: Wide selection of baked desserts and breads. Cons: Expensive. more

an excuse of an establishment 7/23/2009

despite the fact that the bakery is a darling place first established in the 1940's- claiming to be one of the best pastry shops around, i have never in my life been more disappointed with the customer service given at this excuse of an establishment. On multiple occasions I have gone down to the shop for a tart or a cookie and it has said 'out for a ride' or 'sorry for the inconvenience, we really never do this, but: our son is getting married tonight and we will re-open....' It is positively outraging. Besides that, they ARE only open the five days a week (tues-saturday) so i have been denied service on multiple occasions. It really is a shame to have such a quaint little place with so much potential be such a let down when it comes to customer service. better luck next time mrs. backer. Pros: raspberry tarts are lovely. Cons: customer service more

Best bakery without question! 12/10/2008

I lived in SLC for years and we always went to Mrs. Backer's for our families birthday cakes and other special occasions. Their cakes are works of art and always delicious. When I visit SLC, I make sure to stop there so I can bring a cake back to Phoenix! Pros: Beautifully decorated cakes, cupcakes and delicious baked goods Cons: We don't have Mrs. Backer's in Phoenix, AZ! more

Excellent!! 10/17/2008

I grew up in SLC, have been in FL for 20 years, and still come back to Mrs. Backer's Pastry Shop every time I am in town! For years I used to buy a loaf of raisin bread and two eclairs every week - and I just called and special ordered for our trip to Utah next week. I love Backer's Pastry Shop! You won't be disappointed to go here (but never on Monday!). more

Cutest bakery I have ever seen! 7/12/2008

I have driven by Mrs. Backers Pastry Shop many times and it looked like such a cute and interesting place. Finally I stopped by and I was amazed to find a genuine real bakery. I wanted to try everything but finally settled for a rum french pastry and a raspberry cream cheese tart. WOW! I have fallen in love. They have the most beautiful cakes I have ever seen. Next time I am going to buy one of their flower cupcakes and a flower cookie. They also had beautiful cake plates and pretty party things. It is a great place to browse. I plan to get my birthday cake there when my day comes! Pros: everything Cons: nothing more

Don't order a cake from Mrs. Backers 6/14/2008

After moving here from California and hearing that this was the best bakery in Salt Lake, I ordered a cake for a bridal shower. As my husband, a caterer said, I should have bought a cake at Costco-it would have been better! I was shocked at the quality and price-I've never paid $68 for a 1/4 sheet cake, and though the flower decorations were beautiful, they did not make up for the terrible taste, dryness and skimpy cake layers I received. Also, the rest of the cake was thrown out-and that never happens at work where people will seemingly eat anything not nailed down. So far, we have not found a decent bakery in Salt Lake City. more

Dangerously Delicious 3/8/2008

Mrs. Backer's makes the best best best birthday cakes on the planet. The cupcakes are delicious, and the quality is consistent. It's an excellent place to get gifty goodies, because they have a nice variety, from super cute flower cupcakes, with frosting in the shape of the most delicious flower ever created, to sugar cookies coated in a colored fondant and topped with a buttercream smile. SO CUTE AND GOOD! But be warned, once you try it, you won't be able to stop. Pros: So many good goodies! Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, danish, and brownies. Cons: Closed Sunday and Monday more

Wonderful Bakery! 11/1/2007

This bakery is the best. I am so glad I live nearby. I have had many years of happy eating from Mrs, Backer's Bakery. The employees are always happy and very nice. This is the bakery to order Birthday Cakes from as our family has done for many many years. ALWAYS the best in every way here. Very clean, too! Pros: Above average bakery products! Great service and employees! Good prices! Cons: None! more

Great Pastry Shop 7/31/2007

I have tried a few things from this wonderful pastry shop and everything has been fantastic. The eclairs are amazing, as are the fudge bears. They have the best pastries that I've ever tasted. I'd recommend this to anyone. Pros: Great pastries, big selections more

Yummy Chocolate Raspberry Cake 6/28/2006

I ordered a chocolate cake that had raspberry filling between the layers for a baby shower. The cake looked so pretty - perfect for a baby girl shower. The details of the decoration were beautiful - so beautiful that I thought the cake wouldn't taste good. I was wrong however, the cake was delicious. The guest of honor was quite pleased with the selection and you can't ask for more than that. I will use them again in the future. PROS: Easy to order, Convenient location CONS: You may eat too much! more
