All I can say is WOW about the Mosquito Cafe. Spectacular food, nicely priced, cool ambiance. Ordered a breakfast bowl, my first breakfast bowl ever and it was amazing, the potatoes were fresh, perfectly cooked and the bacon is thick and peppered and wonderfully cooked as well. Eggs tasted farm fresh. Fresh squeezed orange juice that can't be beat. Blue Mountain coffee from Jamaica topped off the meal. We were so tempted by the blueberry and cranberry muffins, the chocolate fudge brownies and other delicacies but we had just come from a 7 day cruise and couldn't possibly justify another dessert. We may drive down to Galveston for the day just to go to the Mosquito Cafe. This place is top notch! more

worst service ever 3/16/2012

we arrived at 8:50 with three hungry kids, looking forward to a decent meal, after calling ahead to make sure they would be open till 9 PM, and driving 30 minutes to get there. We were greeted by a rude wooman who told us they were closed, that it was after 9 PM. When I pointed at their clock on the wall (which at that point said 8:57) she just shrugged her shoulders and told me to deal with it, they were closed, and they were not serving me. There were still customers, and there was still staff. When I let her know we had driven 30 minutes and had three hungry kids, she jsut smirked and said good luck finding a place that is open. When I asked to speak to the owner, she gave me his name and said 'goodluck getting hold of him'...another customre told me that b/c it was spring break they were overworked and understaffed, and that the food took forever to get there, and it was cold and tasteless. We went to Ginos (open till 10 PM) and had a GREAT experience. more

Oh, How the Mighty have FALLEN! 5/25/2011

Mosquito Cafe used to be one of my favorite places to dine. USED TO BE. Tonight I had the pork special. I paid twenty-two bucks for four postage-stamp sized pieces of pork (tender and tasty though they were) ONE SPEAR of broccolli (which took me four bites to finish - I counted), and ONE ICE-CREAM SCOOP DOLLOP of some box-flake mashed potatoes (I'm not kidding about the scoop - they were in that shape) which were lukewarm (I'm being kind) and were only palatable after dipping them in the pork sauce, of which there was plenty (for once) as there was so little pork to soak it up... OH! How the mighty have fallen! more

Yum yum yum! 1/16/2011

Just moved to town and I know this will become my go-to place for fresh, healthy, awesome food. Ahi tuna salad was amazing. Cute house and nice quiet location. Good prices too. Can't wait to go for breakfast. more

Best Quality and Value on Island 7/23/2010

My friends and I have been going here for the past few years. This is the perfect place to go by after a long day at the beach! We have never been disappointed by anything we have ordered on the menu. My favorite is the island slammer. If you don't stop here while in Galveston, your trip is incomplete. Pros: great food, nice people, fun atmosphere more

Worst experience ever 5/9/2010

Worst experience ever for Mother's day brunch... My husband and I decided to to take our 2 young children ages 1 and 2 1/2 to eat at Mosquito Cafe. The children were well behaved while waiting for service. We did not mind waiting in line for 40mins; 15 of which was outside standing with the 2 babies. We did not mind because we were chatting with other customers and their kids. It was Mother's day after all and we were in a great mood. We had noticed that there were numerous tables with RESERVED signs on them the whole time we were waiting. None of which had been occupied during our wait. When we got to the counter to order I told my husband that I would grab one of the tables that was unoccupied and unreserved. I was one step away from the table when the owner puts a RESERVED sign on it. Picture this: you are carrying two children and the owner of a business takes your table for “imaginary people”who will be “here in 5 minutes”. The owner points me to a table that was at the entrance where everyone including ourselves had to squeeze through to get inside, or go to their patio; aka, parking lot. With a 2 year old I declined the ""patio""; where he could get out. After explaining to the owner my situation and telling him we would be fast he was unwilling to accommodate us. Had we not already payed (including tip) for our meal at the counter, we would have walked away and gone to the Sunflower Cafe (just down the street). A nice couple sitting at another table witnessed my conversation with the owner quickly finished their meal and offered me their table (thank you again). We had our food served to us, ate our meal, and left. When we left , ALL of the reserved seating WAS STILL UNOCCUPIED! I understand that it was Mother's day. I understand that the restaurant is small. But take care of the customers that are physically waiting in your establishment not to mention already paid for the meal. The phrase “a bird in hand is better than two in a bush” comes to mind. Pros: Fast food (once you have ordered) Cons: For that $$$ to order at the counter and fight for a seat? more

Great for lunch 5/19/2009

Went here for a quick lunch with my girlfriend today. Thought the food was great (I had the Portobello sandwich; she had the chicken salad sandwich). Nice sized portions and really friendly staff. Would definetly reccomend. more

Longtime Favorite 5/19/2009

I dined here at least once a month since it opened its doors (in 1998 or 1999, I think) until shortly before Ike. The employees and owner were always friendly and helpful, and the cuisine was slightly unusual and very good. By far my favorite restaurant in Galveston, and one of the best ""breakfast"" spots EVER; and I find the prices and portions to be consistent with other establishments of similar calibre. For optimal enjoyment, I recommend going there for an early breakfast and staking out a table on the porch, ahead of the hordes. As a matter of fact, the only less-than-wonderful experiences I ever had here were when I chose to dine there at very busy times: parking and dining space is limited, and the high ceilings make for a very clamorous atmosphere when the place is packed. Though I now live in Hill Country - and only occasionally make trips back to the area - you can bet my next trip will include a visit to Mosquito Cafe`! Pros: Great food and atmosphere Cons: Parking, noise and crowds during peak business hours more

Love this place 5/19/2009

This place is fantastic. They have a great selection of sandwiches, burgers and other plates that are always changing, always fresh and always unique. Whatever slaw they have as a side option is always fantastic. The staff is very friendly and I just love the food. The only drawback is that it can get crowded and difficult to get a table at times, but a crowded restaurant means good food! I definitely recommend this place and I'm a foodie. Pros: food, staff, quality Cons: seating more

Do Not Waste Your Money 5/15/2009

I have never really been a fan of this cafe, but after yesterday, I will NEVER return. We tried to take a co-worker here for her going away party, and the owner threw a FIT b/c we tried to bring in a cake with us. I tried discussing it with him in a nice way, but he was extremely RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL so I am doing everything in my power to spread the word. Of course, once I expained that we had 10-12 people coming to eat there, he ""allowed"" us to bring our cake in. Oh, and we had brough an outside dessert in before for another party, and there was no problem. So how was I to know he wouldn't allow it? It is one thing to have a ""policy"", but the way you enforce it says a lot about you and your establishment. This guy should NOT be in a business where he has to deal with people b/c he is AWFUL at it. The food is not even that great, and it is WAY overpriced. You may as well go somewhere else where your business is actually appreciated. Pros: Waitstaff is nice Cons: Overpriced, Owner is HORRIBLE more

Nice Patio 4/1/2009

A nice patio on those cool nights, but lives up to its name in the summer! Decent wines, salads and sandwiches. Order at the counter then fetch your food. Pretty small indoor dining area, best for small parties. Comfortable no-rush island atmosphere. more

Great food in an casual setting - Open again 2/4/2009

My wife and I have been waiting since Ike for the Mosquito Cafe to re open - and now they have! Had breakfast there on Saturday. Food was as great as I remembered. Pros: Food, service Cons: will need more parking nearby as crowds return more

my favorite eatery south of Houston! 1/10/2009

My family and I were in Galveston this past summer and asked a few locals where to eat on the island - every single person we asked mentioned this restaurant as being their favorite. We were far from disappointed - their unique menu featured great salads all with homemade dressings, one of the best burgers any of us had ever had, and a number of other items our group had a chance to try and loved! I would recommend this place to anyone AND everyone who appreciates good food! Pros: Homemade food, Unique items, Amazing desserts Cons: Has been busy when we visited with a larger group - we called ahead the next time. more

Friendly with great food. 6/26/2006

We had dinner here and was so impressed we came back for breakfast. The food was different and delicious. It made you feel you were a regular in a small time cafe. Despite being rated as not kid friendly, my 12 year old was the one who suggested returning there! It is one of those restuarant that when you hear someone is going to Galveston, you would recommend it. Pros: food quality, unique menu, home town feel Cons: you have to order at the counter more

Good veggie food in a world of mediocre seafood. 9/18/2005

Mosquito Cafe is a rare find in Galveston. The food was delicious and there were plenty of vegetarian options. I had some sort of pesto salad that was more than I could eat. The blueberry tea was a hit with me and my friends because it tasted like pancakes. The restaurant is cozy, cute, and attractive. The sangria's pretty good too. It's a little bit expensive, but not outrageously so, and it's worth the price. I'd go back here if I visited Galveston again. Pros: Vegetarian options, Good tea Cons: Somewhat pricey more

Originality at its best! 7/27/2005

This is a very cute and comfortable restaurant nestled in a neighborhood. We were slightly confused about the service until we realized that we needed to order at the counter. We got the Mosquito Benedict and the pancakes. Every bite of the benedict was a surprise. It tasted very fresh. The pancakes were perfect. The portions were huge and definately worth every penny. The menu was a delight and the vegetarian selection is wonderful. It's a fresh change from the typical island food. We are looking forward to going back for lunch. more

Vegetarian Haven! 3/25/2004

This is one of the few places on the island to eat if you prefer vegetarian cuisine. What's great is the fact that ANYONE can eat there. The health nut is a revolving dish that usually includes grilled veggies, brown rice and black beans. The goat cheese salad is wonderful, and the service is always tops. I love coming to this place, but can only do it every once in a while because the prices are pretty steep - expect to pay at least $8 at lunch. Otherwise, it's wonderful. They even have a cute patio outside and a small meeting room upstairs for office parties. Pros: vegetarian, warm setting, large selection Cons: , long lines at lunch more

Fresh and great tasting! 3/19/2004

I have never eaten something from Mosquito that I didn't like. From the chick stack, to the breakfast bowls, to the delicious scones-- everything is wonderful. The service is fantastic. The only reason I don't eat here more often is the price. Pros: Great healthy food, Good Service more

Not a 9+ 7/19/2003

Well-run for Galveston. Certainly they express a certain originality, which isn't always a good thing, mind you. Probably one of the few healthy choices in town. more
