Middle of the road Italian 7/25/2010

We had walked by this place and thought it was cute, so we called to make a reservation on Friday, but was only able to get a 6:30p,, reservation instead of the 7pm we wanted and thought we got lucky. However, the food was ok but overpriced, we weren't served bread (which is probably better for us) but was still something we noticed. And we noticed that it was still 50% empty at 7-8pm (so why deny us a 7pm reservation?). Overall, the atmosphere was cute, but I we have other Italian restaurants we enjoy more to try them again. Pros: cute atmosphere Cons: overpriced for the food more

Expensive & Uninviting 1/17/2010

Morandi's is expensive, serving weak drinks by barmen with an attitude. I wouldn't bother; too many other cool places in the Village without wasting an evening of your life on this place. Cons: Expensive weak drinks served by surly staff more

Its true horrible service 11/20/2009

This waiter could not even explain the food on the menu. Waiter keep on forgetting my side orders. This place is a joke. more

quite a scene 4/30/2009

The brussel sprout salad was unique and delicious. We had a wonderful Sardinian wine. The fish was simply prepared and flavorful. The risotto was very nice. Don't expect big portions. The night we went the outdoor dining was closed, so the indoor space was plenty crowded. It was hard to push your chair back because the tables were so tight. But we didn't mind. Our waitress got to us anyway, and we got everything we needed. For dessert we had the tiramisu which was good but I have had better. Overall, it is a fun, happening place with inventive and tasty food. Pros: great food Cons: crowded more

Great food! 1/15/2009

I went with a few friends last week for dinner and had a great time. The staff was very friendly and warm. The food was delicious! This is the place! I started with mussels which were very tasty, I then had a pasta with pepper and cheese which was amazing. The best part about it was the wine choices. I went with several friends how like different wines. We were all able to order quartino's which made us all happy. This is the place for great food and wine. Pros: Great food! Cons: a little of a wait more

i love this place! 8/15/2008

I've been to Morandi a few times and every time I go it gets better and better. The food is exceptional and the house wines are delicious. The setting and staff were great. I recommend Morandi to everyone at any time. Cons: there is a wait for dinner on weekends more

Terrible Service 8/8/2008

I have never writen a review anywhere before. The maitre ds who were supposed to assist us were beyond rude and unaccomodating. We got to Morandi early and asked for a table. Although there were plenty of free tables we were told they were all booked and there would be a wait, which is fine. After an hour at the bar we inquired about our table and was told our place was lost. The maitre d did not offer to find us a table, say they were sorry about the mix-up, etc. Instead, we were told we could wait another hour for a table - all while we got to watch other groups who got there after us, get a table before us. When we raised this point, the maitre ds were offended, argued with us, told us we did not run the place and told us we could wait our turn (again). Whatevs. I will never go here again (even though I live down the block) and have never experienced anyone at any restaurant be so rude to a group of people. more

Italian delight! 7/20/2008

We dropped in recently to Morandi at 7:30 on a Saturday night. They had a table for us! The food was absolutely delicious, starter, pasta, lamb shank, dessert and coffee. And contrary to some reviews here, the service was superb. Our waiter was Italian, seemingly with all the time in the world for us. We asked questions, got recommendations, and he advised us in detail about menu choices and wine. Then I noticed the same careful attention to our neighbors' tables, all evening long. Assistant waiters were attentive but not intrusive. This was a delightful find. The sauces and menu choices, in general, conveyed a thoughtful kitchen, and reflected the best of Italian 'home' cooking. Pros: delicious home-style Italian cooking Cons: have to like the cellar-like ambiance more

Good Brunch 7/15/2008

Morandi was on my list for quite a while.\r I loved the simple and yummy bruschetta con ricotta.\r Everything else was also good, not great.\r I will go back for a dinner reservation soon and write a better review.\r Clean bathrooms I love, the service was a bit rushed. Pros: nice people watching Cons: rushed service more

Timing is everything 7/7/2008

We went on saturday night of July 4th weekend and walked right in(4 people) with no reservations at around 830 pm and were seated immediately. For starters, the drink menu is pretty good. For appetizers,I had the octopus and celery-which was very good, but a bit on the small side. Our whole table was happy with their first dish. For a main course I had the cacio e pepe, which was very good-it was very peppery-which it should be,and the pasta was cooked just right. My friends were equally impressed with their dinner choices.I don't think they were as impressed with dessert.Overall it was a bit pricey, but it's a nice space, the food was very good and service was very good.I know -we went on a weekend when the hottest spots are notoriously less crowded(thats exactly why we went when we did)but I would definitely recommend this restaurant. more

Yummy - everything!!! 6/17/2008

The food here was really fantastic. Can't say enough good things about it - our waitress was really good too. very knowledgable about the menu, made great recommendations. No pretense here at all - just good food, good service, great location.\r \r can't wait to go back. Pros: Great food, nice staff more

Decent food, few service glitches 4/14/2008

Doesn't make my top 5 list for italian in new york or or the top 3 McNally restaurants, but not bad and at least last summer was the place to be in the village. I had a credit card issue that took a while to get sorted out but it did. Pros: Appealing space, good crowd Cons: Noisy, hot and not great value for money more

great wine and food 2/16/2008

Went with a large group and ordered family style. We were able to sample 4 appetizers and 4 entrees and most of the deserts... excelllent! Pros: wine selection and food quality Cons: great for groups or casual dates... not a con really, I just prefer subdued lighting more

Eh 2/7/2008

Not a place I will return too with a date. Chairs are uncomfortable, lighting made my hot date look his age and the food wasn't anything special. Not terrible, just not special. I'll try it for lunch the next time and see if its better when the kitchen isn't so pushed. The entire meal felt like a rubber chicken, political meeting that cost too much money. Pros: Location, busy, trendy Cons: mediocre food, careless service, cramped more

Handrolled Lemon Heaven 12/16/2007

Morandi is simply lovely. The food is so delicious! The handrolled lemon pasta is my fave. The decor is like a european cottage... Pros: The Menu more

Excellent Brunch! 10/23/2007

We've been to brunch at Morandi three times in a 1.5 month timespan. Each time, service has been great and the food, divine. There aren't many choices on the brunch/breakfast menu but I view that as a good thing. Less dishes to make to absolute perfection. We've dined outdoors and indoors and both are great. The vibe is casual and neighborly. I can't wait to go back. I'm craving focaccia occhio di bue and their delicious sweet breads. Pros: great food, service was great, good value for money Cons: location more

What happened to Jody? 10/2/2007

After many enjoyable dinners over the past few years at Gusto. We decided to start savoring the new creation at Morandi - boy were we disappointed. After 3 visits we could not help but put up a damning review. \r \r This place leaves a lot to be desired. Chef Jody Williams has certainly lost the magic menu she had created at Gusto. Morandi is a disgrace.\r \r First the restaurant: Completely miscalculated decor. The chairs are mismatched - not in a quanit way, but rather it looks like they bought 4 different types of uncomfortable chairs on closeout at Furniture Liquidators Store. The faux italian country decor looks cheap - reminiscent of an Italian restaurant you would find in Binghamton, NY or Poughkeepsie - not in a good way.\r \r The wine list is intentionally lacking of favorites - maybe to show how good they are at finding wines that no one else wants to serve. The funniest thing was that our waiter talked us out of a wine purchase and steered us to a less expensive bottle - excellent training!\r \r The amazing thing is that most of our foodie friend love it. They are stuck in the hype maybe...\r \r So for my third visit I told the head waiter that I was frustrated and wanted him to order for me - dazzle me. He came up with an artichoke salad which was completely bland and practically inedible and pasta with boar which lacked any originality, surprise, or gusto (no pun).\r \r The pasta is pedestrian - boring and amateurish\r The fish is stale\r The our desert could have been made at Dunkin Dougnuts. Pros: Should be easy to get a table. Good location (wil prob be available real estate soon) Cons: Food, Chairs, Ambiance, Wine more

Holy canoli 9/30/2007

This place is the #1 reason for the recent demise of the W.Village (Centro Vinoteca is a close #2). What in the world is up with the (1) cheese factor at the door (fake suits creating an aura of exclusivity) (2) cheese factor behind the bar (is scruff part of the costume requirement) and (3) the fashion-backward clientele this place is attracting? Last night the winner was tough to pick, but it would have to be the 45+ year old woman in silver lame daisy dukes, a black halter top, a pashmina (HUH?) and an 8-year old starving boy's body. She pretty much summed up the after-9:00pm crowd. It is all laughable...and surely the owners are having a hearty chuckle all the way to the bank. I just wish they would do all of this somewhere closer to where the B&T crowd lives. The trash descending on this neighborhood is frightening. Oh and the food? A can of Chef Boyardee, jar of Cheez Whiz and Wonder Bread would be an apt substitute. Pros: Great for a laugh Cons: Location to B&T crowd access points more
