Hidden gem... 6/12/2005

My wife and I just moved to the neighborhood and tripped upon the restaurant. We could not have been happier from start to finish. You walk upstairs to the restaurant which has a very warm, cozy atmosphere. There were so many tempting appetizers to choose from that our decision was difficult, but we ordered the most delicious snails we had ever tasted. The osso bucco was also the best I have had, and the penne alla vodka was good. The service was prompt and friendly. Having just moved from Manhattan and frequented many of the Italian restaurants there, we are excited to have found this wonderful place. Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Value more

Osso Buco Delicious 2/15/2005

What a surprise. I had passed this restaurant many times and had never gone in. A friend took me there one evening and now I have become a regular. The Osso Buco looks like a volcano overflowing and the taste was spectacular. Authentic recipes done the way I remember when I grew up way back when. You must try the Monticelli Margarita at the bar downstairs. For the non-smokers like me the upstairs dining room was private and just what I was looking for. Pros: Osso Buco, Friendly Staff more

I love this place 2/14/2005

From the minute I walk in I was greeted by the owner who proceeded to make me feel as if I was home. The service staff took me and my dining companion through the menu and reccomended the eggplant pomodoro appetizer. Wow, it was rich. I tried the crabcakes for the entree and I wasn't let down after the app. It was all jumbo lump crabmeat and just lightly breaded. I tried my partners filet with crabmeat and gorgonzola it was sinfully good. Loved everything, will definitely go back. Pros: Warm and friendly, Delicious more

A hidden gem 2/14/2005

Monticelli's is fantastic. Fresh Italian food made with care, like you might find in South Philly but with a city atmosphere. Yes, it used to suffer from poor management, but that seems to have changed sine the new folks came. Casual and sophisticated, with live music and a staff and regular patrons that remembers you. Sure, restaurant week kept me--a regular--out. But that's because restaurant week people don't know dining. Sorry. Pros: rich, hearty food, friendly bar, live music Cons: $$$, easily missed more

Disappointing! 1/27/2005

We visted Monticelli during restaurant week and were very disappointed. We ordered the "10 oz filet mignon oozing with crab and gorgonzola cheese". We were served a lukewarm meal with a bland crab topping-we could not taste any gorgonzola. In addition, the portions were tiny- the filets seemed to be closer to 4 or 5 ounces than to the 10 ounces stated on the menu. Salad and penne appetizer were okay-better than the entree itself, but overall, this place is definitely not worth the money! Pros: seated immeadiately, decent service Cons: food, price more

Its not cafe calamari anymore 6/17/2004

To all of you who gave up on there old spot cafe calamari...True it isnt there any more but there is something else there that I think you should really check out. The place has been totally redone it is bright clean and cheerful. The staff is great and extremly friendly. The new owners treat you like your a part of there family.. And let me just tell you about the food.. The meal was ( and I have to say this) one of the most memorable that I have had in a long time, So make sure to give the place another shot.. I can guarentee a great dinner or lunch more
