Didn't wow me 9/19/2009

Okay. I've now tried Mombar after a couple of visits to brother Ali's Kebab Cafe. I must say that Mombar wins with respect to room to move around, and I do think Moustafa beats Ali hands down at customer service. Ali can be downright rude at times, and I think Ali plays fast and loose with his billing. HOWEVER, I prefer Ali's food, which is like a party in your mouth. We shared among our group and I just found everything to be lacking a little in seasoning and flavor ... something that Middle Eastern food typically has. Pros: Nice ambiance Cons: Lack of flavor more

Overpriced 4/6/2008

I had dinner there with some friends yesterday night, and I ordered the stuffed chicken that took almost 1 hour to be prepared! The owner was quite nice though. As we didn't ordered any appetizer, after 30 minutes he brought us some as house complements. Pros: Nice Owner Cons: Overpriced more

Great place! 3/13/2008

Nine of us got together at Mombar over the past weekend and had such a great experience. I can confirm that it is a BYOB place and cash only, so be prepared. Also be prepared to wait some time for your food to arrive because each dish is prepared fresh from the ""open-air"" kitchen by one chef, who was later joined by another as the place got really busy. The food was worth every minute of the wait. The lamb chops were awesome as were the various tagines that several people had. I had a beef shank special that was very delicious. The waiter had no problem opening up the bottles of wine for us and charged no ""corkage"" fee that many BYOB places charge. We were even each given several bottles of spring water without charge. Pros: Very cozy place, never rushed. Cons: Not for anyone expecting a quick meal, can get very warm in restaurant more

Completely unexciting 3/7/2008

I just got back from a 2+ hour meal at Mombar, and I'm ready for another dinner. The service was impossibly slow (got there at 7:30, ordered at 7:45, got our entrees after 9:00), the men working there had perma-scowls, they claimed to have no tap water, then charged us for the six bottles of water they put on our table. The food is overpriced and bland. I had vegetarian couscous (at $14, was the second least expensive entree on the menu), and it looked like it was largely made from frozen mixed veggies. Pros: Cool looking place Cons: Service, food, price more

Out-of-the-way Steinway Gem 3/19/2006

This place is incredible. The food is absolutely wonderful and the owner cooks all of the food himself. The two guys that work there are just plain old nice guys. It's not cheap and it does take a long time if the place has a good number of people in it, but the food is well worth the wait. We go here any time we are looking for something out of the ordinary. Pros: great food, nice people Cons: slow, pricey more

Must visit! 11/18/2005

This place is amazing. I went for my birthday dinner, after doing quite a bit of online research looking for some middle eastern food. This place did not disappoint. The service was exceptional, and the food was as well. We ordered a mixed appetizer and I ordered the lamb entree. My boyfriend ordered the rabbit, which he wasn't as excited about. My food was perfect. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I would go again and again and recommend it to anyone. Definitley a hidden gem in NYC! Pros: Great service, Wonderful food, Ambiance more

Great Gem! 8/25/2005

I live in the neighborhood and have been here several times. I don't recommend the tasting menu or going when it's very crowded on weekend nights. The chef is marvelous and the food is outstanding. Try going during the week and you won't be disappointed. more

A Big Disappointment 8/11/2005

After reading the reviews, I was excited to visit. Big mistake! From the moment I got there, they had no ice for the almost warm bottled spring water they served me. I ordered the $30 price per person fix menu and I got very little in return. This includes 1 appetizer, and 3 main courses. Sounds like alot, huh? Wrong! The portions were so tiny, even a child would be hungry still, the ambience, well, there was none, very grimey, dark, hot (no a/c), steamy & smokey from the kitchen. The food was very plain (I was looking for the salt but didn't want to insult the cook). The service was lacking as it took 30-45mins. per dish to be served. The only decent thing about this place was the bread with good dipping sauce. Other than that, save your money & time on another place. Will never go again. Cons: Ambience, Food, Service more

Amazing! 7/13/2004

One of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at- and my friends and I jokingly refer to ourselves as ""Team Food"" so guess how much I eat out... Every thing was perfect- the food, the service, the spot itself. We started with mixed apetizers- I really think that's the best way to go. We all ordered different things for entres and desserts so that we could all taste each others. And everything was amazing. I especially liked the desserts- the baklava isn't as sweet as the Greek stuff I'm used to in the neighborhood... and this sweet porridge like dessert was simply heaven. more

Unique 2/26/2004

Mombar's a great place for a nice dinner with a friend or two. The decorations really are amazing, and the chef might come over to say ""hi"" when you're done eating. I really recommend the mixed appetizers -- I don't know what they call it, but it has a little of everything. I didn't like the dessert I had there once -- but that might have just been my taste. A drawback: I don't think they take credit cards. Also, their hours are a little random, so check ahead. Pros: food, decor, service more

You'll never eat in a room like it 2/25/2003

Possibly the most amazing looking restaurant in NY, all the more so because the chef made everything himself. Pros: Appetizers, Decor, Service Cons: Wine List more

Hidden Egyptian Gem 12/22/2002

The food, service and decor of this hidden Egyptian gem are top notch. The design of Mombar's building (the facade was designed by Chef Moustafa himself as were the tables and wall hangings inside) drove us to look inside, and when we did we were showered with warm smiles and hot Egyptian delicacies. The glazed duck was unbelievable as was the appetizer sampler. If you have time to visit Queens, make sure you visit Mombar. Pros: Excellent Food more

Oasis 12/8/2002

Mombar is a just that, an oasis in the middle of a busy market street in Astoria. The surrounding atmoshere mirrors one of those Discovery channel types of busy Moroccan markets. The food is absolutely and positively the tastiest of all Egyptian/ Middle Eastern delights you can find around. The exquisitelly and tastefully designed mosaic tables and restaurant space--designed by the chef/ owner-- create a perfect setting for exotic dinner. Pros: personable staff, great food Cons: tables close together, little expensive more

Great food, great Casablanca feeling 9/26/2002

We been there and we really enjoy the food, was areally great food, and the service was really good. The decoration was feeling like we was on the Cairo, actually the street is part of that adventure. more
