Not sure.... 5/16/2011

I still like the saw dust on the floor and having a good pint of Guiness is always an attractive idea, but the place has become so popular that even on a weekday evening, the crowd noise was unbearable, making it impossible to relax and have a good conversation. Not sure.... more

Gone To Hell 1/1/2011

This used to be my local. Sadly, it's gone straight to hell. Since the former barman was dismissed, you'll now wait for the cranky, nasty barman to feel like noticing you and deciding if he feels like taking your money. The owner doesn't care, because he's too busy worrying about his new restaurant two doors down. This used to be a lovely place to hang out all night; now it's a tourist trap, and no one's sorrier to say it than I am. Rest In Peace, Molly's. more

Stay at the bar! 7/23/2010

I found this in the  ""Best Bars of New York"" book, but .. and it's a big BUT! \r \r The place is Irish-looking with the bartender, staff, and half the customers brogueing it up the wazoo! Lots of wood, and nostalgia on the wall. Great-looking from the outside. So I walk in and explain to the waitress that I'm here early to hold a table because I don't know how big the group will be.  \r \r            ""You can't just drink at a table. Tables are for eating. Besides, we don't hold tables. When everybody is here, I'll seat you.""\r ""I don't know how many people are coming. There are some empty tables. Couldn't I sit at one?""\r She walks away. \r \r Ok, it may be reasonable not to want to give away a table for one person, but the waitress could have used some I'm sorry, I'm afraid, or even Give it ten minutes, we'll see who shows up and I'll be glad to seat you then. \r \r After I discovered 3 of us waiting at the bar we got a booth, grudgingly. Another waitress comes for the drink orders. She's as friendly as the first.  \r \r ""You ready? "" I order the shepherds pie.\r One of us is a vegetarian and wants her salad without the cheese listed on the menu? ""Can you make a small change to the salad?""  \r "" We only got what's on the menu!"" And the lovely waitress taps her foot until we finish ordering. There's more, but it hurts in the telling. PLUS the food was pretty bad. The pie was meat, LOTS of salt, potatoes. That's it. \r \r I then resolved to make this the only 1-star review from the bars in the best bar book... but... and it's a big BUT. \r \r While the others are out for a smoke, I get up to have the bartender sign the Best Bars book. He's great! Chatty, friendly, joking around as if I were a real person. The other folks at the bar were as nice. An older regular with the required accent talks to me about the book. Two girls dressed for a good time, just start chatting out of nowhere. Wow! This place isn't as bad as I thought it was. My advice? Stick to the bar. You'll have a good time. Retreat to a table at your own risk. --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers Pros: great bartender, friendly bar patrons Cons: THE WAITRESSES! more

Awful Treatment 9/12/2009

I used to consider Molly's my favorite bar in Gramercy. However, after tonight I will never go there again. I took a friend of mine there to hang out after work. However, the bartender refused to serve my friend when he went up to order our drinks. The bartender claimed my friend's ID was fake. My friend and I are both over 21, and my friend is one of the most polite fellows you will ever meet. I went to talk with the bartender and explain the ID mix up, but he refused to serve me as well. He ignored my explanation, even when I said that I’d been to Molly’s several times this past summer. The bartender simply cut me off and told me to leave. As a young, female student in NYC I am always aware of my age and gender, and the assumptions people make about me. But I have never been treated with such disrespect at a bar. I don’t know if was because of my age, my gender, or my race, but I'm absolutely sickened by what happened tonight, and I ask anyone who reads this to please not go to this bar. more

It helps when your name is Molly 2/24/2009

My sister and I were staying in the area for the weekend, and went looking for a place to get a quiet drink before our dinner reservations, and stumbled across Molly's. Having the same namesake it clearly was fate. The place is fantastic! Semi-dark, relaxed atmosphere, the perfect place to have a couple of beers and wind down. We went back the next night and the bartender remembered not only that we were in there the night before, but what we had been drinking-and it's always great when there is smithwicks on tap! Pros: nice bartender, great atmosphere, great beer Cons: juke box didn't work-but I don't know if they would have wanted us playing it anyway! more

Excellent bar 11/22/2008

Sawdust on the floor, dark but warm, great burgers and wide selection of beer make this one of the best bars in NYC. Whenever I am in the neighborhood I stop by and I always recommend this place to friends. more

my favorite pub 7/14/2008

saw dust on the floor, holiday lights that rarely gets taken down, wooden booths worn from decades of use just make the already really good shepherd's pie and bangers & mash much better. a standard. Pros: tradition more

great little pub 6/12/2008

I ate here with my cousin one day and just loved it. The thing I love about the city is how many dining choices we have. Found Molly's by accident - and couldn't have been happier. Excellent Shepard's Pie - my cousin had the corned beef. Delicious - not pretentious at all, very down to earth and friendly. more

The real deal - a respite from the blare and homogeneity of New York's falsey irish pubs 4/25/2008

Ducked in on the first hot day of New York spring. It was a gorgeous sunny day, and I wanted some sun, but I also wanted a proper Guinness. Inside it was black as a midnight street lit by lamplight. But it was so cozy, so calm and cool in there, and the staff so welcoming, that I decided to take a short break from the blare of the street, shuffling among the wood shavings strewn over the floor, climb onto a stool at the bar and satiate my thirst. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but the interior is really magical - transports you beyond the Atlantic... \r And of course, most importantly, a well-poured Guinness and good fish and chips.\r Not too busy and yet a good crowd. A perfect respite. more

Great pub 2/28/2008

What a treat, it feels like you're in a proper pub in Ireland.\r A fine pint of Guinness, the most generous JD and Cokes ever, wonderful food and a warm welcome from the barman.\r A real eclectic mix on the jukebox makes it a top boozer.\r \r Pros: Great beer and food and a warm welcome. more

Good Food, Good Beer, Great Atmosphere 5/3/2007

This place has a great atmosphere. At times you will really think your drinking a pint somewhere in the Old Country. People here were very friendly and the food was good also. Pros: Food, Beer, and Atmosphere more

One of the best kept secrets in Manhattan 5/12/2006

I love Molly's. It is our neighborhood burger spot. You will not be disappointed. Molly's serves one of the best burgers in Manhattan (the other one being Pipers Kilt in Inwood). In addition, the steaks are excellent and the prices good. And if you like beer battered, greasy onion rings, this is the place for you. The bartenders are experienced and welcoming and the waitresses just wonderful. Molly's is the real deal-not some corny wanna be Irish joint. Pros: bacon cheese burger, shepards pie, fish and chips more

You can smell the peat in the fire 10/25/2004

T^his is the type of place Wineturtle thinks of when you say Irish Pub Food. The Berger is a platefull with real hand cut fries that do not need Heinz to make them good. Ask Jimmy to tell you the story of the Around Long Island Sailboat Race he was in, its a real hoot!!!!Wheres Nick? Lunch time is slow enough to pry out a tale from the Old Sod. Irish Cofee by the Woodburning Hearth(wineturtle once found a Ducco-flame Log in it Shame,Shame, Shame) It like home by the third visit,so go for Lunch,Dinner,And Last Call(always 4AM) and your a regular. Pros: Owner Operated, Clean Beer Pipes, Lunch Bergers more

Before you go to Heaven... 1/30/2003

...make your way to Molly's for a burger or shepherd's pie, because both are among the best in the City. Let's not include the fois gras and kobe burgers. (Note: Corner Bistro is good, but not this good.) The place is authentic, from one of the best pints of Guinness (others: Ear Inn, Paddy Reilly's, Swifts), a solid wait-staff, and all the way down to a well-worn fireplace. If only every neighborhood had a pub like this. Pros: Burger Heaven, Authentic Irish Pub, Guinness Cons: Not near UWS more

Solid hearty fare... 11/11/2002

Yes, it's pretty much what you would expect, given the editorial review, and that's not such a bad thing. Fish and chips are great, but sheperd's pie is probaby the best rendition I've had in a long time. Could see where it would be a truly neighborhood bar if not for the occasional loud group meeting there. Still, not bad for food and atmosphere if you're the laid back type. Pros: Food, Beer, Atmosphere more

More then just Guinness 9/19/2002

If your tired of country club food at new car prices and could care less about rubbing elbows with the beautiful people then this is the place for you. Sawdust on the floor, great food, and Guinness on tap. What else is there. more

Good Pub Fare 7/8/2002

The food is hearty, fresh and, if nothing else, boldly-seasoned (i.e., gourmet palates may take offense). If you want to sit down and get a big and spice-laden hunk o chopped sirloin, covered by a big slab o cheese, and accompanied by crisp fries, you come here. The Guinness is fresh but could be pulled better (easy on the head there, boy-o). The service can be gruff at times, a bit absent-minded, but ultimately accomodating. Lastly, if you dont mind the smoke from the bar and the close quarters, its a great place. Pros: Burgers more
