Try the double crunch roll. It's awesome. If you're a beginning sushi person like me, try it. You won't regret it.

My and my boyfriend used to frequent this place a lot; decent sushi save for a few ""blow outs"" (when the sushi falls apart). The service is usually spotty, ranging from good to slow and the prices have been reasonable. The last time we went was the worst and last experience we'll have there. We hate sitting at the small tables because there is never enough room, but the waiter was a total dick, wouldn't sit us at a four person table, even though there were plenty open by the time we came and went. The worst part was that they have raised their prices! On everything, by a dollar! It doesn't seem like a lot but when you order four rolls and an appetizer, it can get really expensive! We'll now be on the hunt for a better sushi place, its just not worth coming here anymore. more

Service Fantastic, Sushi Fine 9/11/2009

Very clean store, friendly staff, good veggie rolls. Pros: Fast, fresh and veggi friendly - Great Service Cons: On Hawthorne more

If you are looking for Japanese food, eat elsewhere. 3/22/2009

What a great location to walk to a neighborhood restaurant. If you are expecting to eat Japanese food you won't find it here. Having been brought up eating traditional Japanese food this stuff doesn't even come close. It's great for those not familiar with the nuances and flavorings of Japanese food. I rate it a 1/10th of a start. Pros: good location for neighborhood dining Cons: doesn't resemble real Japanese food more

Awesome Sushi Rolls 12/4/2008

Try the double crunch roll. It's awesome. If you're a beginning sushi person like me, try it. You won't regret it. more

Best Sushi in Town 12/4/2008

I love this place. The sushi is great and affordable. Please try the maguro (tuna), it's the freshest in town. I've tried other places and can't compare. My wife had udon and it was authentic. Try it, you'll love it. If you love sushi, then you'll love Mio Sushi. Pros: Extremely fresh with awesome taste. Cons: very busy. more

Excellent and consistent lunch spot 5/28/2008

My office orders sushi from Mio about once a week. Our order is ALWAYS correct, the sushi is fresh, delicious and the rolls are prepared consistently every time. Occasionally, they have added new, free items for us to try. We appreciate that Mio's sushi is seafood-focused, they don't add alot of weird mayo-based sauces to compensate for poorly packed rolls. Mio's sashimi is thick and proportional to the rice underneath, again they highlight the fish instead of overpowering it. Their packed restaurant only shows that people appreciate consistently good food and will return again and again to enjoy it. Pros: great food Cons: parking is difficult on Hawthorne Blvd and the surrounding neighborhood streets. more

Overrated bland sushi 5/16/2008

Very overrated. The sushi is simply not that good. The rolls are not well made and they almost fall apart. Below average at best. more

works for my family 2/27/2008

very good food! The wait staff was friendly to us and paid extra attention to my 3 year old. This place was about as good as you could hope for a crowded sushi restaurant on a Friday night with a 3 year old and 3 separate checks for one table. more

great sushi...bad service 10/25/2007

Sushi here is quite good but the service makes me never want to go back. I have NEVER EVER gotten a refill on my green tea, Not once in the 20 or so times I have been here, and I usually ask about 2-3 times per visit. The waitresses never smile and act like you are wasting their time by being there. If Ichidai were open for lunch, I would have no reason to ever set foot in this place again. Pros: good sushi Cons: horrible waitresses more

Great Sushi, but lots of choices for non sushi lovers 9/9/2007

I love this place! Their sushi is very nice, not the best I have ever had, but definitely worth trying. The lunch menu is very worth while checking out if you happen to be in this part of town, and it?s always quite during the lunch hour. The dinner menu is extensive, with a great selection of very cheap alternatives to sushi. If you?re not a sushi lover, then plenty for you to try. It can be very busy in the evening, so expect to wait. I only found this restaurant about a year ago, and am now a regular. Pros: Great selection of food both sushi and other, great value on non-sushi items. Cons: Can be busy in evening, can get cold inside door in winter (avoid these seats). more

friendliness not strong suit 7/3/2007

Upon entering, stood at the front for 5 minutes while chefs glanced at us several times. Finally a waitress came and told us to sit anywhere. When our order came I realized we were missing a salad, ( the crisp salad is great and I love the orange/ginger dressing. ) The waitress said she had forgotten it. While she went to fetch the salad I told the people I was with that it was okay, I would just forget to leave a tip! Then we sat there finishing our lunch which was very good. They had just closed for the afternoon however and I felt guilty sitting near the door eating away as disappointed customer after customer was turned away. I resolved if I ever go back at all it will not be near closing time, as it was very bittersweet trying to enjoy my food while customers were being turned away left and right. I will most likely steer to a more friendly Japanese restaurant next time! And, yeah I did leave a tip, but not as much as I would normally. Pros: good food and sizeable proportions, price is right Cons: not friendly more

Excellent food and service 3/18/2007

This is the best place for Tempura in Portland. Not Greasy... I love it. Clean, good service and very fresh tasting food. We go here all the time. Pros: Food and service Cons: Parking on Hawthorne is a challenge more

BEST SUSHI EVER! 1/12/2007

Mio Sushi is the best sushi ever! Im not just saying that, I have tried SOOOO many sushi places, in many states. I live in Seattle at the moment and I, nor my husband, can not find a place that compares. Not only is it the BEST tasting with the most creative, yummy, rolls it is also so cheap! If you dont like sushi, their noodle bowls are to die for! I have been to every Mio Sushi location in Portland/Beaverton and they ALL are fabulous. We used to go once a week at least and now we can only go when we visit Portland....I hope we move back soon! The service at all are great. more

Fresh,fresh,fresh! and still fresh! 12/21/2006

I loved it the second I walked in. I was made to wait a while but I did so knowing that the smells emanating so sweet and fresh would soon be sitting, pleasantly in my tummy. What a wonderful suprise. The fish is fresh and the veggies so crisp with little to debate when the price for this delicately thought out sishi experience is taken into consideration. I have returned many times and each time I leave a satisfied fat clam. more

Horrible Service 12/8/2006

I would never go back to this place. Not only was it very slow, we actually had our waitress come after us outside the restaurant to ask us for a bigger tip!! She stood there pretty much demanding that we give her a bigger tip, since the check was for over 100. However, she only came to us twice, and both times forgot things we asked for. She was rude and didn't care about her customers, only that she was working. I will never step in this place again. I suggest going some place else for sushi. Or make it yourself! more

i don't get it. 10/23/2006

why does everyone rave about this place? the fish sits in the case, presliced, and they throw it on a slab of bland rice with no wasabi. it wasn't terrbile but sushi is about the experience; ambiance, preparation, artistry, service, etc... mio offers none of those things. more

Mama Mio, No! 8/19/2006

I love sushi. But, unfortunately there is much better sushi in Portland than what I experienced at Mio sushi on Hawthorne. I ordered a sushi combo plate and was very disappointed. The sushi was average at best and defintitely not worth the price I paid. I was anticiapting some really good sushi for the long wait but it just wasn't meant to be. Perhaps, it was just a bad night. All in all, I would not recommend this restaurant if you are a sushi lover. Pros: Hawthorne area Cons: disappointing sushi more

worst waitress ever 7/23/2006

Well I do like the sushi & most of the servers are very friendly and wonderful. Unfortunately I will not go back again because I end up getting treated terribly many times that I go in by one server named Jennifer. She is so incredibly rude & totally ruins the experiencne. She totally ignores us, never comes back to see if we need anything, and never brings the food. I was a waitress for years so I am a very understanding & good tipping customer - I would have NEVER behaved like her - I have never experienced anything like this and hope that when she is gone that we can come back. Pros: good sushi, reasonable Cons: bad service more

Mio... Don't think so! 4/9/2006

I really want to like this place, good location, I love sushi & a nice crowd but... gosh the service is the nastiest. The waitresses look like they want to spit on you instead of taking your order. The atmosphere is thus negative & also the harsh lighting & immense noise don't help. Sitting near the cold windy doorway there are always people waiting, one time including a seriously pregnant lady which just made us feel guilty to hurry & clear off our table. The ""Crunch"" roll deserves kudos but otherwise this place simply sucks - there are plenty of better Sushi restaurants that deserve credit & roll a tastier Maki. Pros: Crunch roll, Location Cons: Noise, Mean Waitresses, Food quality more

Great deal 2/22/2006

This is good sushi at a great price. We recommend carry-out since it's fast and the ambiance in the restaurant is only so-so. Not many places you can eat as much as you want and not feel like you're ruining your health or your bank account. Pros: Carry out, Fresh, Value Cons: Ambiance, Wait on weekends more
