The Chinese restaurant standbys are good, but the true gems are the Chef's Specialties. The Buddha Delight is phenomenal, the pan fried noodles are out of this world, and the coconut soup is to die for! The egg rolls have been voted the best in Austin. Fai Jow, the owner, is a heck of a nice guy, too, and if you talk to him about what you like he'll cook you up something special. Monday nights feature live music by well-known Austin artists and always has the place rockin'. Try it out. You won't be sorry! I have lived all over this country and have only found one other chinese restaurant with great wonton soup (it is in Portland, OR). The wontons are made in the thin wrapper instead of the thick pasty one, the broth is well flavored and has generous amounts of bbq pork and nappa cabbage. The fried wontons were also fantastic, light and crispy with a wonderful dipping sauce. All of the entrees we enjoyed were well seasoned and perfectly cooked (not greasy like alot of chinese restaraunts). The prices are also very good and the owner friendly. I had my first date there and the servce was ridiculous. Serious communication problems with the people behind the counter and the food was sooooo freaking greasy and salty that my feet blew up like a balloon.....bad idea if you have diabetes or allergies to sulfites and preservatives as I never had before till I ate there. I went to the bathrom and one of the servers came in and did not even wash his hands. I even saw a woman pick up trash around the sitting area and touch used cups then go help serve fresh food....NASTY!!!!!!! I remember years ago there was a problem with Chinese restaurants in Texas cities being dirty and i wlll tell you that I had gas for two days that Tums and Zantac could not do much even together. I am from New York City and have been looking for NY style egg rolls and these are as close as you can get outside New York, in addition to the egg rolls, which are the best in Austin, the rest of the food is just like all the little store front Chinese takeout restaurants in NYC. The food is cooked fresh when you order it at the counter, nothing fancy just good American Chinese food with dishes like the lunch specials that come with sweet and sour chicken, fried rice, and a drink. (Moo Goo Gai Pan, Tangy & Spicy Chicken, and Pepper Steak are $5.99.) The food is served on Styrofoam plates brought to your table. It is also a good value for the money with large portions. Don't forget to get all their dipping sauces as everyone is excellent. The even have duck sauce which I haven't found in any Austin restaurants. I don' t care about ordering at the counter or eating from Styrofoam, it's all about the food.
