Mercadito Midtown - Miami, FL

Editorial review from Urbanspoon 8/18/2012

I've heard great things about this place and I was honestly disappointed. The decor is wonderful and chic if you're looking to go have a couple of drinks at the bar, not the best dinner experience. We went to try the Miami Spice and it's a fair amount of food. The drinks came 30 minutes late, we tried the guacamole which was awesome. The queso fundido was average and so were the tacos. The desserts were okay but the service was terrible. The waitress was never to be found. I was told this was a million times better than Rosa Mexicano......I'm not so sure. more

Stay away unless you enjoy going to a restaurant that will leave you hungry at the end!! Overpriced cheap Mexican and poor quality desserts - I swear the flan comes from the grocery store down the street. I've had better tacos AND service off the street vendors in Little Havana. The best part about Mercadito is the decor so save your money, hit the art walk and buy the tacos from the food trucks! more

Good place to eat at a reasonable price, but service is not that good, even though they use a pretty efficient way to order, nobody explains it and the Worst part is that when you get your order you have to check if they did it correctly, most probably you'll have food missing or wrong.... The bread is still my favorite, very good products, but if you are a "service freak" then think twice before you go to Montaditos, if you are a "warrior" and don't care about the wait and probable errors in your order, then ENJOY!\r BTW... The music won't help... more

Horrible!! Stupidest hostess ever! After 45 minutes of waiting I asked about the reservation .... And she forgot about it!! more

I actually heard decent things about this place. \r \r I'd been having a burrito craving, so I tried their Al Pastor (pork). The meat had an oddly unpleasant taste...kind of like an oil slick in your mouth. I wondered if possibly the meat was old, or if I was tasting a dirty la plancha griddle. I threw 3/4 of it away.\r \r I wrote that off to either a bad night, or possibly a peculiar take on Al Pastor, which I understand to have a widely varied flavor profile.\r \r Still craving a burrito, I went back the next day and tried the steak, figuring that would be straight-forward. Same result. Weird, unpleasant tasting meat, like it was cooked in rancid oil. Threw that one away 1/2 through. I wouldn't have even eaten that much, but I was starving.\r \r This place is flat-out gross. This experience, combined with the fact that they have the audacity to have $30 dinner items on their menu when they make a vile $9 burrito, will make me avoid this place like the plague.\r \r I've heard people in Miami say it's great, and that makes me question their palate. Stay away. more

Even the margaritas are cheaper. If you're in a pinch and want Mercadito without the hard hit to your wallet, just hop next door for a good meal.\r Overpriced food for such simple, bland ingredients, nothing exotic on the menu that would make it worth such a high price. \r This place is a perfect example of a hyped up, trendy restaurant that caters to people with no concept of real Mexican food or the value of your money. Save $100 and pick up Taco Bell instead.\r The food was between crappy and mediocre.\r Mercadito Midtown missed the mark completely. I will definitely not be returning, and if you do end up going, make sure you avoid Juan at all costs!\r ?$150 for 3 people who had 5 alcoholic drinks isn't anything to be offended about, but for that amount you can eat elsewhere with better service and a better overall experience.\r Service is terrible and everything is soo overpriced, not worth it.\r I really don't get what the hype was all about! They did an amazing job with their decor, but who's willing to spend $$$ for bad and little food. Not me, nor anyone from my party.\r Huh, huh, huhhhhhh!!???! What is all the hype about this restaurant? It completely sucked! I really don't get it. more

Excellent ambiance, good food a little pricey. You could buy a whole taco bell for the price. Try the guacamole. It's an orgasm in the mouth. more

Food is marginal at best \r Had Pineapple guacamole , it was a very basic pineapple chunks with Guacamole.. not great just crushed avocado \r Dinner was nothing to write home about had better Mexican in Austin , NYC , NJ , Coral Gables and LA and that's eating out at corner stalls and nice neighborhood restaurants in those cities \r The service is great !\r So would i go back ( yes just for drinks ) dinner no . more

I went to Mercadito at MidTown Miami and it is awful!!!! The food lacks taste and the first time I went I left with major stomach and intestinal problems.....\r \r Yesterday, I went to TAQUERIA, also at Midtown. Ends up being owned by Mercadito. Though I was not puking all night and into the next day as I did at Mercadito, I still felt funky. My partner is not a happy happy camper today, he's had an upset tummy all night and this morning. more

Some quick comments\r \r 1) This is listed twice on Urbanspoon, hopefully they would consolidate.\r 2) There are a lot of negative reviews (under both listings) having to do with price and service. I was only here for lunch, found the waitstaff good, but the kitchen is a little slow. we were told when we order that the chicken tacos would take 30 min. I cannot understand this, does chicken take less time to cook than pork? Not that I am aware of.\r 3) Price - this is really a Tapas place. I dont speak Spanish, but I think tapas translates into something like "small plates, big prices". Its food meant for sharing, without a big (or any) distinction between apps, sides or main courses.\r \r The food itself is one of these modern sort of twists on traditional mexican/latin food. These places seem to be sprouting up everywhere. There is a great place called Brasitas closer to home for me. Honestly, when I am in S. Florida I sort of like to go more authentic, down and dirty food. I can see where someone might find this a little too fru-fru.\r \r But... Hey, I really liked what was on my plate. Nicely seasoned, flavorful, attractively presented tacos. Served open face, three to an order. Loved the scallop taco. Unusual, but a real winner. Mahi Mahi was great as well. \r \r Lots of things to try, different variations on guac, tacos, etc. Loved the fried plantains (granted the degree of difficulty on fried plantain is pretty low). \r \r Its not Tex Mex, but I would imagine great for a group to go out, sit outside and share some good food. more

Went to Mercadito with my husband on Sunday after avoiding it for some time due to the mixed reviews we received from friends. I have to say...very happy we gave it a try. The food was great! Service okay...he got friendly after he saw we were having a few shots and he was going to have a nice bill. We indeed had an excellent time trying out some of the Tequila and the tapas we ordered were great. The Queso fundido...amazing, guacamole excellent, and the fish tacos our server recommended were delicious.. we will give it a try again and hope not to be disappointed. Went today to Sustain and stay away....first off the food is not good at all, service was not bad - but just didnt really care and actually sold me on the most expensive dish the $30 duck as the recommended dish...but not due to taste...he sold me the most expensive dish...good for him..but we will not be back. Stay with MERCADITO OR SUGARCANE and you willl not be disappointed. more

We went because my friend gave me a gift card. We sat outside. The service was great which was kind of surprising after i had read the reviews here. The food was fast and soooo good. Kinda pricey though but worth it in special occasions. more

I would like to think I know tacos. Its one of my favorite foods. I lived in the SW for several years and traveled throughout Mexico and Central America. Since moving to Miami have had to really work at finding good Mexican. It's kinda scares. But I have enjoyed tacos at many decent places: Line, Salsa Fiesta, a really authentic place on SW 8th and, of course, El Torito in Homestead. I've been there three times and found this place to have amazing tacos...... but that's all I've ever ordered off the menu. These are tacos with a gourmet twist. The tacos are smaller than what one might be used to but thats the traditional way corn tortillas are made in Mexico and throughout Central America. It's a very basic taco but the "filling" is excellently cooked and the different salsas aren't so bad. more

This place is a perfect combination of good food, great drinks and fun times! Brunch, Lunch or Dinner is great... Even the little place outside for fast food its super good. The ingredients are fresh and ypu feel you are finally eating a real mexican dish. The decoration of this place is a mix between rustic and modern that makes it look fantastic! The service is good and the manager is even better! This is the place I take all my friends or family when they visit me, is the place where I celebrated my last birthday is the place I go everytime I crave mexican food or when I just want to have fun! The margaritas are the best! Cheers to this place they rock! more
