Not worth the wait, nor the $ 5/5/2009

I know it's California and prices are naturally going to be higher, but $30 for breakfast at a 50's nostalgia diner for two people is just absurd. I wouldn't even be so mad if the portions were decent, but I left Mel's feeling robbed, deaf, and still very hungry. Not to mention the staff was extremely off-putting, mumbling our orders and a bit condescending. Here's a break-down of what we had: French toast (two slices for $6) with bacon (2 slices for $4.99) iced tea (weak and watery, $2.50), Turkey Melt ($7.99 and nothing to write home about) with fries (SEPARATE, and about $3) and a coke ($2.79). All in all, plus a scant tip, we paid $30 just to turn around and pay $10 for a decent and filling breakfast at a cafe two hours later. AVOID THIS PLACE, unless of course you have a trust-fund. Pros: Breakfast All Day Cons: Absurdly high prices, unfriendly staff, too loud more

Awesome place!! 11/19/2006

One of the few places on Lombard that's open 24hrs and tastes good. They have their own parking lot and the customers are an interesting lot late at night. Their milkshakes are awesome and their chicken strips are perfectly cooked and not greasy. Their burger sizes border on the absurd; nobody should be allowed to eat this much burger unless they're over 7 feet tall. Their counter is large and seats many, and their booths are comfy if not a bit cramped. Pictures of Lucas and American Graffitti adorn the walls. I try to make it here whenever I visit. more

Overpriced Diner Food 1/17/2003

Mel's is anything but cheap for the type of food you are buying. Since when is diner food so expensive? It's nothing you can't make yourself, and the ambiance is loud and jarring! Furthermore, it is so busy, the waitstaff doesn't seem to clean properly. If you like filling breakfast food, go to Homeplate or something. Don't waste your time at mel's. Pros: Good milkshakes Cons: Bad value, mediocre service, not clean more

Not Original 1/5/2003

Not the ""Original Mel's"". I have been to the Orignal Mel's Restaurants in Walnut Creek, Reno and in Placerville, now THOSE places are worth rating! This Mel's food is ok, nothing to brag about. You have to pay for fries to go with your burger! I'd rather go to Nations. The only good thing is this place is open late. Pros: Open Late, Basic food Cons: Not Quality more
