friendly staff but terrible massage 1/24/2011

I booked a 60 minute massage. It was 4pm when I arrived, right on time. The receptionist was very friendly, as was the guy who came out immediately to come take my coat and offer me a drink. However, I had to give this spa one star based on the service itself. I had Keiko as a masseuse and honestly she gave me the worst massage of my life. I found myself wondering halfway through if she suffered from ADD. She would give my left foot three quick squeezes, then cover it up and move to my left foot. Three squeezes, cover up. Uncover one arm, rub quickly up and down, move to the other arm. She spent more time covering and uncovering my limbs and applying oil and moving around the table than she actually spent massaging. And everytime she moved, something clanked or she bumped the table (which was rickety and actually squeaked A LOT!). At one point she banged something metallic into the table really hard. And then, instead of apologizing, she did it again a moment later! And she muttered to herself the whole time (lot of loud sighs and grunts), which was not relaxing! A couple of times she found one spot and really dug into it, until I had to tell her to stop, and then instead of stopping she continued to do it while explaining that I had a knot she was trying to work out. I finally had to tell her to leave the ""knots"" alone and that I just wanted to relax. After which she muttered three or four times that I had sensitive skin. It sounded like, ""your skin...your skin...your skin too sensitive..."" I think she realized that I was getting seriously annoyed with her, because she actually got better at the end and gave me a very good 10-minute back rub toward the end without any muttering! It was such a contrast from the earlier slacking off and banging around that I was really surprised. Then a really loud buzzer went off. I've only had masseuses use those loud buzzers to time themselves at supercheap reflexology places, never at a real spa. She then covered my back up and left. I'll also say that after I got dressed, I took a 3 minute call with a friend, went out, got my coat, used the bathroom, paid, and then looked at my watch and it was exactly 5pm, so this buzzer must have been set at 45 minutes or something...I still left her a $25 tip because I figure that it's not an easy living being a masseuse, and really the ultimate responsibility rests with the spa, who should screen and train their therapists better. By the way, when I complained about the squeaky table, they admitted that they'd given me one not usually used for massages because their other room was occupied by my friend. The clear solution to this would have been to ask me to wait for my massage, as I know my friend's appointment was 2 hours before mine--we had tiered it deliberately because they told us they couldn't accommodate both at the same time! They should not have used that table for any massage at all once they knew it squeaked.\r \r Edit to add: I'm deleting the original second part of this review because Keiko now says she received the whole tip I left her. Someone had simply forgotten to hand it to her. I will leave this comment in: I should mention that the tip ""envelopes"" were basically folded sheets of paper, and I did notice at the time that there was no way to seal them, unlike most spas where you could not only seal the envelope but also drop it into a slot for a box with that therapist's name. My advice for anyone going is to either give your tip to the therapist directly or tip via credit card - I usually like to leave cash but without lock boxes credit card tipping might be for the best. more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS 12/17/2010

HILARY THE OWNER IS A WITCH. SHE DOES NOT CARE ABOUT HER CLIENTS WHATSOEVER, $ IS HER ONLY OBJECTIVE EVEN IF THAT MEANS PROVIDING THE WORST SERVICE POSSIBLE. I had extensions done at the salon by Christine who turned out to be incredibly inexperienced and unprofessional. After applying the extensions in such a horrible way that it damaged half my head, she then stole the remaining hair leftover from the extensions (extension hair is very expensive). When contacted the owner (Hilary) to complain she told me she would ""fix"" Christine's mess but only if I bought additional hair and said she was not responsible for her employees actions. You would think the owner would know how to apply extensions, but my new hairdresser told me that she did such a horrible job as well. Moral of the story: STAY AWAY more

Great Massage by Keiko 12/2/2010

I came in feeling really stressed, just miserable all over. Keiko, who does amazing shiatsu, was able to "listen" to my body. She worked on my lower back, legs, and shoulders. As soon as she started working on me, I began to feel so much more better. I went home, slept like a baby, and woke up feeling great. Keiko made me feel like I just came back from a relaxing vacation. This was the absolute best massage I've ever had.. more

Shiatsu by Keiko 11/30/2010

Keiko, who is not only great with shiatsu and general massage, but pleasant and friendly, worked on my back and shoulders, which were holding a lot of tension. I thought right away that she knew what she was doing, and she did. After she finished, I felt fantastic!!! Had a date that evening and important business meeting the next day. Felt my absolute best for both!!! Run to Me U Salon and insist on Keiko!!! She's amazing!!! more

Highly recommend Hair Stylist Patrico at Me U Salon 11/26/2010

I went to Me U Salon without knowing what to expect but as soon as I walked in I felt good. My hair stylist, Patrico, took care of me. I had some red in my hair that I didn't want and he was able to get rid of it and gave me the perfect hair color. Irving washed my hair was great as well. He was massaged my head while he was shampooing and conditioning. When it was a time for haircut, I trusted Patrico to give me a haircut that he thought would look good and it turned out great! I work in fashion and everyone commented on how great my hair-color and new hairstyle looked. I just discovered a new hair stylist who really knows how to take care of his clients when it comes to making your hair look beautiful. more

Go to Kenny for a GREAT cut and blowout! 11/24/2010

I have been going to Kenny for the past 7 years to get my hair cut and wouldn't think about going to anyone else! He always takes the time to discuss what you want done and ensures that you're happy at the end. I have very thick hair and he always does a great job of making it look great and making it more easy for me to dry and style. If you're looking for a great cut and some good conversation too.. go to Kenny! more

RUINED MY HAIR / RUDE, UNPROFESSIONAL, ONLY AFTER YOUR MONEY 11/17/2010

The ME U SALON completely destroyed my hair. I CAN NOT believe how they could have let me walk out of the salon looking like the way i did. My scalp and ears were FRIED, my roots ended up being a ?highlighter yellow? color and my lowlights (which were supposed to fix the disaster) turned gray/blue. On top of this, they burned my scalp to the point where my neck and ears broke out severely (unfortunately i cannot post the photos here, but they go to YELP and you will see them). When I asked if the yellow would eventually subside, Patrizio/Patrick, the gentleman coloring me hair, along w/ complaining about how he isn?t compensated fairly at the salon and how he needs to make $2000/week in order to fund his high-end lifestyle, said ?here?s a tip, I don?t normally tell people this? just use some Windex on your hair when you?re in the shower, it?ll take the color right out? . SERIOUSLY?? ARE YOU KIDDING??? more

Bad Experience Left Bad Taste 10/9/2010

I went to Me U Salon a few times last year. I loved my stylist Michel, but did NOT like her partner. On one of my visits, her partner added an extra $20.00 to my bill without my knowledge. When I called to inquire about the extra charge, she told me that she would have to get back to me. (I guess she needed extra time to think of an excuse to give me). Okay she finally called me back a couple hours later and gave me some cockamamie story. She might as well have said it to me in a foreign language because I had no idea what she was trying to explain to me. In any event, I did go back a couple of times after that, but with hesitation because this incident left a very bad taste in my mouth. Like I said I loved Michel!!! She's an awesome stylist and a very nice woman. I would probably still be a client of hers if her partner weren't there controlling things. It seemed to me that she's very money hungry and really don't care very much about the customers! This is just my opinion. If you like the salon and the service, more power to you, but I say proceed with caution...AND MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR BILL FOR ACCURACY!!! more

Decent Place 7/31/2010

I just went here today, using my Lifebooker Loot as well. It doesn't quite live up to the amazing experience promised in the Lifebooker description. Even though, they did provide everything that they said they would in the description. Including offering a glass of wine/water. It's a nice salon, but it's not quite as clean as I would have expected it to be given the high prices of the salon. But I am also really picky when it comes to cleanliness of salons. They don't have a very broad selection of nail polish, either. I am satisfied simply because I paid no more than $30 for a mani and pedi, but if I had to pay more than that, I probably wouldn't have been satisfied. Pros: Location Cons: Overpriced more

Great Friendly Staff 7/23/2010

After reading the description for the Caribbean mani pedi on lifebooker i was very excited for a $28 deal on a $120 treatment, however this wasnt at all what was given... although I did not see a reason to complain because I loved the mani/pedi and my nails look amazing! I was offered wine, water and a free blow out. My friend ended up getting the blow out from Christine who was great ( i would recommend her to anyone for hair) and a complimentary express facial as well. Both which were phenomenal. I was dolled up in some make up and pushed a little to make a purchase but since it was a great make up product I didnt mind making a purchase. It was a beautiful salon/spa however in my taste it was pricey. Not that it makes it a negative at all because you are receiving quality care. Therefore if you can afford their prices I recommend this place 110%! Pros: great atmosphere, offers everything:make up hair nails etc Cons: very pricey more

Caribbean Mani Pedi 7/20/2010

Don't freak if you have the Lifebooker deal and you read these reviews - it's totally worth the $28 (from $120!) However, no one should pay $120 for this. But - yes there there was wine (2 complimentary glasses for me) - an offer for a free blow out, which I didnt take cause I'm a shut-in tonight and who cares if I look good. Mani Pedi was lovely - AVEDA products, mud on arms and legs, great color application, and a thorough job. My woman was so gentle I was worried it was going to be crappy - but nope, she was a perfectionist. Great deal. Thanks Lifebooker! Pros: Free wine, free blow-out, great mani/pedi Cons: Could never have afforded it w/o Lifebooker more

Great Blowout 7/16/2010

Signed up on Lifebooker for the Caribbean mani-pedi, and while it was not as luxurious as the description cited, it was an overall very good experience. My manicurist was very nice and the right amount of conversational. They did offer us wine, which was nice, and a complimentary blowout! The blowout was great--and so was Christine, the hairstylist! I definitely recommend her. She taught me some great tricks about how to blow dry my own hair. The service was good and everybody was very cheerful. I might go back, but I think the prices that they normally offer ($120 for a mani-pedi? Or was it $60...) were kind of steep. But overall, a nice experience. Good location and nice atmosphere. I'd recommend Me U Salon Spa! Pros: Great Blowout, Nice Staff Cons: Not exactly what we signed up for, but good. more

Did not receive all that deal claimed 7/12/2010

The Best Care ever in the whole NYC 5/20/2010

I really don't know how to start this review because I cannot put into words how GREAT I felt after spending the day at Me U salon. I went in there yesterday - 5/19/10 for the very first time for hair extensions. I had spoken to the owner Hillary a couple of days before the appointment. She was very friendly over the phone and patient trying to work with me to determine what kind of hair I will need to do my hair. Pros: Relaxing Calm & beautiful Spa. Oustanding Customer Service. Cons: NONE - They are the best in every service they provide more

Thanks Christibe 4/27/2010

I am known for being indecisive and always coloring my hair from brown to blonde all the time. My hair is brown now but damaged and I wanted to get a little hi-liting for the summer time. I was referred to Christine from a co-worker of mine and I have to say it was the best recommendation I had in a long time. Not only did she do an awesome job but my hair felt great afterwards from the treatment she had given me. I want to return the favor and recommend Christine. Best Find Yet! Pros: Great color more
