I love these guys 1/13/2012

I felt the need to step in after reading the reviews here about the way Maxwell handles insurance because that's exactly why I love them. \r \r I've been working with Maxwell for over 2 years and have had 4 different insurance plans in that time. They have always taken care of me. The copay is only $10 where it would normally be $40 for me and they have a policy of never billing you. I'm sure everyone has had an instance in which they were told something was covered by their insurance and then got a letter from the insurance company telling you you owe them another huge amount, well that happened to me once after going to Maxwell. I called them and their response was ""Ignore that. We never bill our clients"" and they ate it. \r \r Now let's get to the actual physical therapy. I've had alot of injuries and should probably take it easy on my body but I'm a heavy lifter and these guys really take care of me. No one in the business gives you longer massages and you get one on every visit. You're also able to visit a chiropractor for adjustments and get physical therapy in one visit for one copay. I've never seen that anywhere else either. \r \r I don't know what they bill the insurance companies. All I know is I pay $10 for incredible treatment. \r \r Oh and they're very good about last minute appointments and don't have any of those annoying ""cancel within 24hrs or be billed anyway policies. I actually suck at keeping appointments sometimes and they're always very nice and accomodating about it"". Again. I love these guys. more

They make you feel better... but they are insurance scammers 8/7/2011

Yes, the physical therapy helped my sore elbow and carpal tunnel. But although each visit only costs patients an arbitrary $10 copay (no matter what your insurance), Maxwell Medical bills your insurance company an exorbitant rate. They are only looking for money from your insurance company, not you, but loopholes like this are why premiums continue to increase. An assessment and a treatment were billed $3700. My insurance company paid them the 60% that it covers, while I was only on the hook for $10. I am promptly finding a non sketchy doctor that can help me and charge me my correct copay for reasonable rates. I guess you should know better to not go to a place that hands out flyers on the street. Too bad, the treatment was great! If you don't have a conscience, this place is fine. more

Bait & Switch In Action Here 5/26/2011

I was walking down 40th Street when I was given a flyer for a free 1/2 massage. On the flyer is does say that some restrictions apply. I called this location and was told there were 2 restrictions - one was that I had to be experiences pain-which I do have in my neck. But its the second restriction that's really disgusting-if you don't have insurance that this office takes, they won't honor the free massage. And when I asked about it, the woman that answered the phone beat around the bush about it. Finally, after I asked for the 4th time, she said that they won't honor it if you don't have insurance that they use in their office. Never once did she ask me if I would be interested in making an appointment to come in and deal with my neck pain. So for all of you that don't have insurance...don't bother with this place! Its just looking to scam your insurance companies! more

BACK TO HEALTH! 4/22/2010

After injuring my lumbar (lower back), and years of pain due to "knots" in the muscles of my romboids (shoulder blades), I finally found EXACTLY what I needed. I have been through several types of chiropractic care (Ghonstead in college for 8 months, Chiropractic BioPhysics in post military service medical treatment, Applied Kiniseology during the military and again before discovering the gem that is Maxwell Medical) and physical therapy, but never at the same location.\r \r After visiting several physical therapy, message therapy, and chiropractic locations, the conclusion to rehabilitate with Maxwell Medical WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE. Their front office is organized, efficient, and on top of their business. The reception is warm, welcoming, courteous, personal, and professional. They always confirm your appointment and always schedule around THE PATIENT'S availability. However most importantly, they are punctual.\r \r The Massage therapy is so important to rehabilitation I would not be at more

Back to an active lifestyle 4/22/2010

After injuring my lumbar (lower back), and years of pain due to ""knots"" in the muscles of my romboids (shoulder blades), I finally found EXACTLY what I needed. I have been through several types of chiropractic care (Ghonstead in college for 8 months, Chiropractic BioPhysics in post military service medical treatment, Applied Kiniseology during the military and again before discovering the gem that is Maxwell Medical) and physical therapy, but never at the same location. After visiting several physical therapy, message therapy, and chiropractic locations, the conclusion to rehabilitate with Maxwell Medical WAS NOT EVEN CLOSE. Their front office is organized, efficient, and on top of their business. The reception is warm, welcoming, courteous, personal, and professional. They always confirm your appointment and always schedule around THE PATIENT'S availability. However most importantly, they are punctual. The Massage therapy is so important to rehabilitation I would not be at the range of mobility or strength I am today if not for these professionals. Make no mistake about it: this is NOT a cushy-mushy massage. This is THERAPY. The therapists are there to strengthen your weaknesses (I've seen mostly shoulders, and lower back issues). All those ""ow! my army hurt when I lift it past 90 degrees"" or the ""My lower back is killing me!"" are a lot more serious than people think and the therapists not only educate you on whats going on inside your body, but also describe the procedures and specific area they are working on in your body.. After several sessions of therapy, I was able to gradually work in ""the gym"" a small but very useful and resourceful room to strengthen weaknesses via small, but VERY important exercises that are prescribed by Chris. This is a great opportunity to strengthen the core of your body as well as to improve the pain for which you seek treatment, and further improve range of motion with excercises The chiropractic care here is top-line. I personally go to the 40th street location by Bryant Park, although they have another location in the 50's as well. Dr. Ron Nathanson knowledge of not only the back, but of the entire body and it's inter-connectivity is unsurpassed by any chiropractor I have ever heard of from friends, or experienced first hand. He is professional, personable, and flexible. After several weeks of chiropractic care I requested he change the method of which he works on my back, and he was able to do so without so much as a flinch. All this work is done under the care of several medical doctors (Doctors of Osteopathy?) who track the improvements in periodical reviews of my (and probably every) patient file. I can personally recommend: Dr.'s: Dr. Unson, Dr. Gimplevich (sp), Therapsists who are STRONG for deep tissue manipulation: Caeser, Yingah, Joey, and Chris, Chiropractor: Dr. Ron Nathanson I took the time to write this long review b/c I truly believe in their work. I not only eat more slow-food (natural stuff that is healthy vs. fast food), have a stronger core, am taking the appropriate amount of vitamins, have a larger range of motion, but most importantly -- I have been able to walk normally without pain again and resume an active lifestyle of snowboarding, kayaking, surfing, hiking, biking, swimming, etc. Pros: The therapy, the care, Professionalism, RESULTS!!! Cons: 52nd street location has more space, more

Force the staff to check your insurance coverage 4/21/2010

First thing this morning, I made an appointment for 1:30. I asked them twice to check my insurance and call after they did. They didn't call back, so I called again and they assured me that it would be fine. After I got there and filled out all my info they brought someone out to tell me that my insurance is not in network, it would cost me $75 instead of $10. I asked three times about this, they had five hours to find out and I ended up wasting an hour and a half of my work day. My neck still hurts. Really inexcusable. Pros: facility looked nice Cons: poor service, waste of time more

Really helps 11/2/2009

My boyfriend finally got me to go here to address various bangs and dents, and it really, really helps. I go in pain, and leave not in pain. I'm not one to like hanging out getting treatments like this, but if it improves the rest of the week, great. Pros: Friendly, nice, and professional staff Cons: sometimes a wait more

MAXWELL MEDICAL ROCKS 4/20/2009

I would like to say a big thank you to Caesar of Maxwell Medical - 16 East 40th st site for his total professionalism, his care for the patient he is working on, his patience, his hands on and he is always in such a good mood, always so upbeat plus he gives a rocking massage.\r \r Way to go Caesar - and I AM PAIN FREE....:)\r \r Bernadette Pros: wonderful staff more

Tried and Tested! 11/17/2008

Been a patient here since June 2007. Not only have they fixed the problem I first started going to them for, they've helped keep me healthy ever since. Their breadth of services, and friendly staff, are second to none. Highly recommened! more

Best Physical therapy and Massage therapy in town 11/3/2008

I have been going to MaxWell Medical for a few months for knee and neck pain. I was greeted with such warmth that you don't typically get from a Dr. office. They are far from a ""typical"" They are always excited to see you, and seem to always know your name. My therapist was Ceaser and Suzy these two have a gift. It took me a few visits to start feeling better, but once I felt better I knew I made the right choice. Not only did they take me out of pain and discomfort, but they also taught me the valuable tools that I would need to lead a pain free life. \r Thank You MaxWell Medical!!! more

If privacy matters, this place isn't for you... 10/29/2008

Although the staff is OK I had to go thru too many HOOPS to go back. Took forever to see if I had coverage (the #1 issue was payment) even tho I was told on the phone NO PROBLEM. Then a 1/2 hour of options??? And after all that I get put on a table with nothing but a curtain instead of walls - For all I went thru I would have at least expected walls in the treatment area. So if privacy is of the least importance to you, find another facility. I wasted time and $ because I didn't check the place out. Sorry! Pros: pleasant staff Cons: NO PRIVACY! more

Great Facility 10/28/2008

I have suffered with back pain for years, before coming into MaxWell. They were able figure out what my problem is immediately. They are very hands on. They were able to eliminate my pain in a few weeks, I can't believe I had suffered for so many years. I am now able to play tennis, and bowl again. MAxWell has changed my life and the staff ( Chris, Ceasar, Rob, Anna, Suzie, Yinka, Paula etc ) are geniuses. \r The front desk staff is super friendly, I always leave there feeling great. I would not hesitate to refer them.\r And as for the comment about the office being noisy, they are always very clear about not being SPA.. this is not a tranquil place ... it is a place to get out of pain and feel better.\r \r As far as the insurance... they work with PPO's and POS and explain your benefits completely.\r So DO MORE for yourself. :)\r Pros: Great Staff more

Great Staff 10/27/2008

I have been going to Maxwell Medical for a few weeks now and love it. Everyone from the front desk staff, to the doctors and therapists have been great. I started going because of arthritis and degeneration in my neck. After the first massage with Paula I actually had quite a bit of relief. The ongoing therapy, stretches, massages and treatments with the chiropractor has improved my quality of life in a very short time. With health care costs at an all time high, why not take full advantage of what your insurance does cover. I quit going to my regular acupuncturist because I couldn't afford it. Now Maxwell offers it so I plan on going there for treatments. If I had any sort of feeling this place was not up to par in regards to quality of patient care I would not keep going back. Thanks Maxwell Medical for helping the pain in my neck not be such a pain in the neck. more

This place is pretty good ... But there's a catch! 10/27/2008

I went here for the free 30 minute massage. Here's the deal. This is a medical office at 52nd and 5th.. Very nicely appointed, clean, nothing skeevy at all. They have doctors and offer medical treatments besides massage. A fellow named Joseph was my massage therapist, and he did a very nice job. Now, I never had a pro massage in my life, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But Joseph was professional, and I would recommend him.\r \r Oh, and to the reviewers who complained about the noise and lack of walls -- the location at 52nd St had little rooms and was pretty quiet.\r \r So what's the catch? Here goes. It's a DOCTOR'S OFFICE! So you have to need medical treatment. As it turns out, I had just thrown out my back this past weekend doing housework, so I actually DID have a sore back. When you show up, they want your insurance info and you have to sit through a consultation so that you can hear about your medical options. It's totally free, but they want your info so they can tell you what it covers if you want to come back. Turns out I could get ongoing treatment for my back pain (or for other readers out there, for their ""back pain,"" I suppose) covered by my insurer, who would pay 70%. Maxwell Medical would waive my 30%, and all I would pay for my massages would be a $10 co-pay.\r \r Huh! $10 for a massage! The going rate in the city here is $30 for a half hour. Not too shabby! And I could put my co-pays on my medical spending account, so that they don't get taxed by the Man! My insurance pays for up to 60 visits! Sweet. But my rare back pain is plenty treatable with Motrin and rest. I only throw out my back a couple times a year. I don't need medical massage. And I might need those 60 visits if I ever really do slip a disc.\r \r So thanks for the free massage, Maxwell Medical! You have a nice place, nice people, professional services. But I don't need your medical help, and I prefer not to rip off my insurance so I can get dirt cheap massages. Pros: professional office, friendly staff Cons: It's for people who have a medical problem. Or say they do! more

MAXWELL MEDICAL ROCKS 10/23/2008

I can't say enough about MaxWell Medical.. They are efficient, friendly, warm, effective, attentive, accessible, informative... etc and the list goes on ... The front-desk staff is amazing and is able to answer all my questions and accommodate my hectic schedule.. They are the nicest group of women I have ever encountered.\r And the treating staff from the doctors to the therapists... are STELLAR.. this is a first rate group of professionals who CARE about each and every patient they walks through the door. I have told all my co-workers about them and how they have helped me and educated me about me pain.\r LOVE THEM !!!! MaxWell ROCKS Pros: Welcoming enviornment, beautiful office Cons: Going back to work and leaving Maxwell :( more

Great ""hands-on"" work!!! 10/21/2008

I find the staff, whether they are the doctors, therapists or admin to be very friendly and helpful. I have been to a number of PT practices over the years where different therapists will work on you and this practice I find, has the most consistent methodology. I really don't mind which person works on me because they are ALL really good!\r \r Also, you don't get that feeling like they count the minutes that they work on you. They work until they get the knots out!\r \r I admit I was reluctant at first because of the lure of 1/2-hour massage but now I am a regular user of this practice and would have no hesitation referring them to anyone. Pros: very good therapists Cons: none really! more

Outstanding Care, Wonderful Staff 10/21/2008

I went to this place on the recommendation of one of my co-workers and I am more than happy with the care I receive there. I have been to other multi-specialty places in the city and Maxwell Medical is by far the best one I've been to. The office is very nice and has a soothing feel to it. Absolutely everyone who works there is friendly and genuine. The medical doctor I met with was very knowledgeable and spent plenty of time with me on my initial visit. The chiropractor took the time to review the x-rays I brought in (from another doctor - who never reviewed them with me) and he explained my problem in a way I would understand. I have nothing but good things to say about Maxwell Medical and will DEFINITELY continue to refer my friends and co-workers there. Pros: Beautiful office, friendly staff, convenient location Cons: I have to leave there and go back to work more

Good Listeners 10/15/2008

The reason why I go to MaxWell Medical is because they really listen. I have been to other offices, and have been treated as just another patient with treatment plans consisting of just e-stim and ultrasound. But, at Maxwell Medical, they really listen to me and understand my needs both physical and emotional. They use more hands on care, which personalizes my treatment plan. As a result, I am actually feeling an improvement! Pros: Feeling great! Cons: should have locations in NJ! more

Paula was great; one of the front desk persons was extremely loud/chatty 9/17/2008

Okay, so let me just say that Paula's massage gets five stars--plus, it was free so that makes it even more wonderful. The location is also not bad and the office decor is pleasant. The DC that I met with was very nice as well. \r \r However, the hard wood floors in the waiting room don't absorb the noise: the constantly ringing/blaring (loud!) telephone, and there was a woman at the front desk that literally did not stop talking for the 20 minutes that I was there waiting. She was loud and chatted up everyone non stop (plus she was two feet away from me)! Not a good mix. I never get headaches and I had a doozy after 20 minutes in there. Also, this isn't their fault, but I am very sensitive to perfume and someone was wearing a lot of it, can't say whom it was though. All of the staffers were kind, even the chatterbox, but she just really annoyed me. I'm sure she's nice though and the other customers liked her. I think. Pros: Paula Cons: Very noisy and yes, I live in Manhattan more

Warning - No Privacy - 1 star 9/2/2008

Went for neck pain - won't go back. Really a weird setup. There are NO WALLS! Just flimsy curtains between you and the next ""patient"". You can hear everything going on next to you. I would think this would be somehow not kosher when it comes to all the new privacy stuff all medical offices have to abide by. They obviously don't - or, unbelievably, no one has ever complained. You get more privacy in a spa!\r Ick Ick Ick - I almost walked out BEFORE treatment but they had cleverly already taken my money.\r If you are the least bit private don't go here.\r Pros: ? Cons: NO PRIVACY more
