I WAS DENIED SERVICE AT THIS LOCATION BECAUSE I HAVE STAGE IV CANCER.
According to the massage therapist SERENA, it was because she could make me "sicker" by pushing the cancer around through my blood and lymph and into my lungs and brain. WHAAAT?
This archaic, ignorant, unfounded myth is being perpetuated by these massage therapists at this location, further supported by the front desk girl, Brittany, the location manager, Rob Chan who also conferred with the "most senior therapist" Seth, who also confirmed that "massage can proliferate cancer cells to grow." Stating this is their "policy".
In my follow up phone attempts to reach the manager Rob, I was told by Brittany that he "was not in", had "just gone out" & she didn't "know when he would be back", and "comes and goes." When I asked to speak to the franchise owner, Brittany did not know who the owner was.
After calling for 2 days to reach Rob Chan, the manager, I was again told he was "out" but he did finally call me back a few hours later. Our conversation was chaotic circus of very bad customer service and ignorance about the influence of massage on cancer. He claims that I was not denied service because of my cancer in spite of SERENA refusing do the massage because she "knows what (she) can do" pushing the cancer around and possibly giving me lung and brain cancer, but because their policy is that they "require a doctor’s note" in order to perform the massage.
During our convoluted conversation Rob offered to send me a Massage Envy Oncology Guidelines document, which he clearly has never read, nor have any of his Licensed MT's. I think he thought it would support his argument about massage influencing cancer spread, but the document specifically says that "recent discoveries show these beliefs to be incorrect."
And the document says they "recommend" a doctor's note of approval, but does not require it.
He finally revealed that the Owner is Andy Chan, but would not give me his contact information, as Rob didn't understand why Andy Chan, the owner, would have any reason to be involved & refused to provide contact information for Andy Chan.
The bottom line is this Massage Envy - Hermosa Beach employs massage therapist who are at the least undereducated and frighteningly ignorant about benefits and limitations of massage and do not know or follow the standards of care set by the Massage Envy Corporation.
And this location is run by manager, Rob Chan, who has no interest in providing good customer service, as he seems to be absent all the time, leaving a naive front desk person, Brittany to run interference for him, because he is so reluctant to problem solve client issues, and at all costs will prevent any contact with the location owner, Andy Chan, if you find you're just getting stonewalled by Rob, as I was.
How unfortunate it is that these massage therapists are so ignorant to the benefits of massage for cancer/chemotherapy patients. I've been managing my Stage IV diagnosis for 10 YEARS, combining classic medical intervention and complimentary meds, like massage.
If they are in fact licensed, they are responsible for their ignorance and the misinformation that they are continuing to blather around and should have their license revoked until they get the appropriate education, rather than continuing to DISCRIMINATE against cancer patients.
