Very ordinary Indian place 4/13/2006

The Masala Indian restaurant is very ordinary. There is nothing impressive to say about the food or the decor. The place looks really shabby and can be better maintained. The samosas is pretty good. It is right in downtown Iowa city.. so the location is great. Very ordinary and the price is very reasonable too. They cater to most of the Indian functions held at the university and around town... so they are well known and popular. more

excellent indian food - with buffet 3/19/2006

I really like this restaurant. The location is good, walking distance to ped mall, the food is excellent and the prices are very reasonable (counting on student customers). Some may be reluctant to give Indian food a try, thinking it is all curry. Curry is a major indian spice, but curry does not equal curry and mixed in with a lot of other spices the flavor really changes. What you will not find at Masala is boring food. I like to sample dishes with my friends, just to get to try as many different dishes as I can. They have a nice selection of mild to spice dishes, someting for the meek and the daring. Try to get the buffet as a nice introduction to Indian cooking. more

Indian food...a nice change for this Mom! 8/12/2005

Wandering Iowa city the other day, childless, I decided to treat myself so something new and different. Thinking about what might be new out there, I grabbed a phone book and found Masala. Conveniently located on Dubuque street, just a short walk from downtown I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the door. Now, the restaurant is small but the taste and atmosphere is huge! I was a bit leery about trying Indian cuisine but afterward I was glad I did! The taste is out of this world and the smallness of the area only adds to it's charm and personality. Leave it to Iowa City to have another gem tucked away......this place is really good....give it a try, you're gonna love it! more

Masala hits the spot! 8/1/2005

As both a life-long vegetarian and Indian food junkie, I was so happy to find Masala right in down town Iowa City. They have a terrific lunch buffet, usually with four or five main dishes, naan, side sauces and dessert. Their dishes are mostly quite mild, which is good for someone who is new to the cuisine. Mild, however, does not mean flavor-free! Everything I've had there (I go quite often) has been delicious. They have one of the best mango lassis I've tasted. The space is not large; but it adds a coziness to the experience you won't find elsewhere. Finally, the prices are great--you won't go broke eating at Masala! more
