The First Steps of the Civil Rights Movement Took Place Here 4/17/2006

Important places associated with Martin Luther King, Jr. and the American civil-rights movement line this half-mile stretch of Auburn Avenue - King's birth home and grave site, Ebenezer Baptist Church (where he worshiped and preached) and the Fire Station No. 6 Museum are the main historical attractions. Don't miss the visitor center, however. It offers spine-tingling exhibits, video displays and film presentations. Particularly poignant are eight life-sized statues of men and women, black and white, in a simulated Freedom March of the 1960s. You can stand among the figures and listen to the old spiritual songs. The experience is really quite mind boggling. You can take self-guided tours of all the buildings, except King's birth home, which requires preregistration at the visitor center. Tours usually fill up by noon so expect to wait several hours unless you sign up early. Your best bet is to sign up upon arriving and visit the other buildings in the meantime. The best times to visit are early on Sundays or on a weekday; October, November and December are the least busy months and summer is the busiest time of year. more

Good African American History 8/20/2005

Have checked this historic site out year after year, although there haven't been any changes in the structure, the meaning and importantance has grown more and more. The King Center is one of Atlanta's most historic destinations. It explains Martin Luther King, Jr's life, history, and hardships. You can visit the Library, Archives, his burial place, and his home. You can walk around by yourself and enjoy. To see the home, you must sign up for a tour. Make sure you listen to some music and a recording of a sermon and definitely check out the church which he was pastor, their is a new church across the street from it now that has a service every sunday morning. I believe it's a big tourist attraction also. more

Atlanta's Must See Attraction 8/20/2005

The MLK Jr. Historic Site combines a museum of MLK Jr. and the Civil Rights movement with a Birth Home Museum and the Ebenezer Baptist Church museum. It's located next to the King Center, which houses MLK's tomb and a good book store, but not much else. The main attraction is the civil rights museum, which uses mixed media to showcase MLK's life. The museum uses film and tv footage, text and sculpture and is really moving. more
