I've eaten in all the well know steak joints in NY. This place was disappointing. The staek was not on par with the likes of Sparks, Peter Lugars, Bobby Van's, etc.

Amazing Food in a Warm, Friendly Atmosphere 10/26/2011

From the moment I entered the bar I knew that I had found my new favorite spot! I was having a beer and the bartender asked if I had ever tried the bacon. Since it was my first time at Mark Joseph's I had no idea what he was talking about. A few minutes later I was served the thickest slice of canadian bacon that I had ever seen! We were so comfortable at the bar that we decided to stay put, watch the game and order Porterhouse for 2, hashed browns and creamed spinach. After the bacon I should not have been surprised at the thick cut of porterhouse that filled the sizzling plate. AMAZING is all that I could say! The hashed browns were crisp and tasteful. The creamed spinach was the best I have ever tasted and there isn't a drop of cream in them. I will have to try the desserts on my next visit! more

Great Steak, but is this a day care center? 9/10/2011

I live in the area and we used to freqent MJ's whenever we wanted a really good steak. The steaks are fabulous, so are the sides and the desert. BUT....The last few times we have been there it seems like the owner's children are running around. On Mother's Day they were all outside, our table was by the window and they were making faces, screaming and being obnoxious, while the owner and family dined in peace. This place is VERY expensive, and in this economy it is not so easy to spend that kind of money, no matter how good the steaks are. The last thing I want is a bunch of little kids sticking their tongues out at us and being disruptive. My Daughter actually closed the curtain they were so annoying. Heads up, find a babysitter or control your kids!! more

My New Favorite Steakhouse 8/18/2010

I have lived in Manhattan for 5 years and consider myself a steak lover. I have finally found the ultimate steak lovers fantasy, MarkJoseph Steakhouse. It took me 5 years to find this place so I am sure there are many out there, who like me, are always looking for the ultimate steak and think they have found it. The steak is consistently perfect. I say consistently because I have gone back once a week for the last 5 weeks just to make sure 'it was that good' and every time I cut into the Porterhouse it is tender and bursting with flavor. The appetizers are consistently good. My favorites are the bacon, mozzarella and tomatoes and the hot seafood platter (you have to have a big appetite to enjoy this and your steak). The sides are basic but delicious. Save a little room because the MarkJoseph Special desert is a must have! more

classic steakhouse 2/26/2010

I had a great experience, good times great food! Pros: great service, perfectly cooked steak, good sides. Cons: tough to get to by public transportation. more

Very decent steak, excellent service, but a bit out of the way 1/25/2009

Had the 16oz filet mignon, lobster ravioli w/ shrimp, whipped potatoes, and the fried calamari. Calamari was excellent with a great balance of squid and breading. Our side of whipped potatoes was the best I've ever had, and tasted very light. The lobster ravioli was so-so, they did not really seem like they were handmade. I felt the shrimp on the plate was the main focus of the plate, which was excellent. They were the largest I've seen in my life. The filet mignon was decently cooked for medium rare. The service was absolutely excellent as there were no problems with plate-sharing, and the server had plated our entrees for us separately at the table. Wine was poured consistently, and we weren't bothered too often at all. This place does tend to be out of the way and the cab driver we found had a bit of trouble finding the place. Overall a decent experience but a bit short of anything special. Pros: Great service Cons: Tucked away and difficult to get to more

My favorite steak house. 10/31/2008

The porterhouse steak for two - My favorite. They must be using so much butter for it.. It is so buttery and so good!! Dip in the butter juice and dig in!! So wall street, traditional atmosphere. In southseaport. Great service. I like the old style bar too. Pros: Delicious Steak For Two!! more

They burn your steak...always. 10/18/2008

If you are among the few who like a steak M\r edium, get ready for a piece or charcoal coming your way. They CANNOT cook it. I have been here four times and I specifically told the waiter NOT TO BURN THE STEAK, and always comes back with a very thick layer of charcoal which destroys the taste. They arrogantly try to explain how I am supposed to eat like that. \r \r Unless you like your meat rare...dont eat steak there. (unless you like chewing charcoal!) Pros: the fish is good.... Cons: burned steak, high price more

Great Meal at MarkJoseph 10/16/2008

When we need to celebrate, and I'm in charge of selecting the spot, this is where we go. The meat is terrific, the service is excellent, and the sides are satisfying and rich. I love the franklin salad, which we tried to duplicate at home: what a HUGE amount of work that was, and of course it wasn't as good. We always have a great meal here. Sure it's pricy but this is a splurge meal in many ways. About one years ago we took a group of old friends here, and they're still talking about it, even the woman who is mostly a vegetarian. MarkJoseph is really, really good at what they do. more

Worth the Trip Downtown - by Cab or by Plane!!! 6/30/2008

Consistency is what keeps bringing me back to Markjoseph Steakhouse! I look forward to the delicious Porterhouse - mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach- and have recently made it a tradition to have lunch delivered on Fridays to my office! Their lunch menu is terrific but I stick to the Porterhouse! It is to die for! Although there were some changes in the management a few years back ... most of the staff has remained the same since they opened. Ray - the new manager - is always a friendly face to see and makes everyone feel like a regular. MarkJoseph Steakhouse is what a traditional steakhouse should be! more

Impressive!!!! 6/30/2008

I just found my new addiction! I heard alot about Mark Joseph from my coworkers and finally decided to try it out this weekend. I was pleasantly surprised to see an unsurpassed quality of food. I ordered the shrimp cocktail as an appetizer and the Shrimp were huge and tasty. I ordered my favorite steak, the porterhouse, and it came out on a sizzling hot plate. It was to die for. The sides were amazing also. Our waiter, Marty, suggested the truffle oil mashed potatoes. They were yummy. It was refreshing to finally have waiters that were on the ball and there when you needed them. The wine selection was outstanding. I'm a wine lover and was delighted to see all the great wines that I could choose from. I sat down with my bottle of Opus and enjoyed an evening of great food and atmosphere. A must try for all. more

Meatlovers Paradise 6/30/2008

I just had dinner at Mark Joseph Steakhouse with a bunch of friends and was very impressed. The staff was incredible. Our meals were outstanding. We loved our steaks and the sides were delicious. To top it off, I got the pecan pie for dessert, which was outstanding. They also have the greatest bartenders in town. Not only are they great guys but they make the best drinks in town. more

What happened? Not what it used to be 6/5/2008

I had not been to this restaurant in some time since my company moved to Jersey City. I did, however, have fond memories of my experiences there so we decided to visit last Friday. I was extremely disappointed. All of the good things that I remember about this establishment are gone. Our drinks were horrible (my martini tasted like dishwater), the steaks were tough and grizzly and our waiter was quite rude and grunted at us in a manner that none of us understood. I did not recognize anyone so I did not know who to voice my issues with not that it would have mattered anyway. I recall when Mark Joseph was such a wonderful place where you were greeted by familiar happy faces and the food was just superb. What happened? Guess everything changes. Needless to say we will never be back. Cons: no greeting whatsoever, unattentive lazy service, sub par food more

Can't wait for full dinner - great food at bar, too! 9/22/2007

Found this place after work on a Friday night. Went in for a drink and we were instantly treated to the amazing scent of sizzling beef! Our bartender John B. was great and when we said we had to succumb to our watering tastebuds, he made some great suggestions. Two guys next to us ordered the porterhouse for two and were drooling. We ordered 2 slabs of canadian bacon, huge slices of tomato and white onion, littleneck clams and the steak tidbits. It was fantastic. Here's the lowdown: Bacon was absolutely delicious. Thick slab slice grilled to prefection. Tomato and onion was suberb in it's simplicity. No sauce, dressing or anything. All that was needed was some S&P. Clams were perfect and the sauce was great and the extra horseradish on the side was a nice touch. Steak tidbits were tender and succulent, served on baguette rounds with tasty mozzarella cheese melted on it.\r \r We can't wait to go back for a formal dinner. Nice atmosphere and the wait staff were very friendly.\r \r Will definitely bring clients for lunch or dinner. Pros: Great location in middle of Fulton st. neighborhood more

Great food, quiet atmosphere 8/14/2007

The food is always great regardless of whether you go for the steak or some other dish. Also, it is quiet so we can always here each other. This is especially nice when we are on a business lunch and don't want to be screaming details of deals. more

LongIslanders opinion 8/8/2007

Mark Joseph's Steakhouse is the best steakhouse my staff and I have ever eaten at. Service, appetizers and drinks (cosmopolitans) at the bar were phenomenal, seating for dinner was timely, servers were friendly, clean, professional, well versed with the food choices and the food was outstanding. Some of us had steak, others fish and all the sides were made to perfection as well. Unfortunately, we had no room for dessert - maybe next time! Afterwards,we had a great time walking by the seaport to burn off some of those calories! We would highly recommend this restaurant! Pros: Parking, walking distance from seaport, great food and service more

The real deal for steak 7/29/2007

I was very impressed by the hostesses and waiters the were accomidating right from the beging. There is a very comfortable feelling. \r \r More importantly the steak was incredible and all the sides are everything you would expect from a great steakhouse. When I think of going out with my friends for good steak, SEAFOOD and a good time, I think of Mark Joseph's. Pros: Steak and Seafood Cons: all male more

Best Steakhouse in New York 7/29/2007

My favorite place for steak! I've been to many of the Peter Luger want-a-be's and none come close to Mark Joseph's. Luger's is good but no seafood and really no choices. The daily specials offered at Mark Joseph's make every return trip a new experience in dining. I am no where near a wine expert so I rely on the knowledge of the friendly wait staff, the presentation and service is un-matched. Price wise I have paid more for less and as the saying goes you get what you pay for, I leave happy time and time again! Pros: Parking less then a block away, close to South Street for a whole days experience . Cons: Reservations are needed more

Really, the best i've ever had. 7/28/2007

It was breal busy. Pretty cool, we saw a couple of the NY Yankees eating there. You have to get the pecan pie. I would recomend this place to anyone. Pros: Food was amazing Cons: pretty busy more

Best Steak in New York ANYWHERE, Nuff Said 7/26/2007

I have eaten at every Steak House in Manhattan over the years and I have finally found my home. I even waited to write this review till after I ate 15 meals, several lunch and the rest were for dinner. This place is consistently great!!! I am a Porterhouse Man but the Filet with Lobster Tails or meals I went with Lamb Chops have made me question my loyalty. The steak is always cooked to my request and the seafood is ALWAYS fresh. The Hostesses are welcoming and the Waiters are friendly. My Girlfriend even asks me to take her to MarkJoseph Steakhouse regularly, she is in-love with the Salads and the diversity of the menu which always has amazing Chilean Sea Bass, Grilled Tuna or Salmon for when she is not in the mood for a Filet which she admits being addicted to. Location is easy with their proximity to the FDR and next-door parking lot. Take a cab though, the Winelist is OUTSTANDING!!!\r Pros: Food, Staff and Dining Room more
