Always fantastic 12/25/2009

Annually for at least the past 5 years we have been coming down from Lincolnshire to meet up with family for a dinner and night on the town. This includes 4 children under the current age of 10 and they love Mario. The atmosphere is ""friendly neighborhood"" with excellent food, during a lull in a busy night there the kids even got a tour of the kitchen. This place is always reliably 5 star. Pros: Baked Ziti and anything that has that fabulous sausage in it more

FAMILIES NOT WELCOME 4/14/2009

My husband is a mgr of a 5 star restaurant&I am in the hotel business, we understand how important it is in this economy to attract&care for loyal guests. It?s a shame that Mario?s didn?t care enough about retaining us as customers. The atmosphere is deceptively welcoming.Food-decent, U could go to Topo Gigio(3blocks away)&have great food&warm family atmosphere. One redeeming quality-our waitress was very pleasant. Perhaps the owner should learn such a skill. We had a dinner rsv for 3 adults&a 10month old. We were seated next to another 15months old, which again would indicate that children are welcome. It wasn?t until my child started talking-not crying, but talking, that the owner felt he needed to come over w/ the bartender & essentially tell me to shut my child up.As he put it he had a lot of ?nice diners? coming in on a Saturday evening.I couldn?t believe what I was hearing! My son wasn?t crying/throwing food or playing with silverware-he was speaking; how I am supposed to reprimand him for that?My husband&I work closely with the CVB as well as local concierges&this experience will be shared. If they don?t want families in there on a Saturday night that is their prerogative-they shouldn?t accept the rsv. Please do not ask me to discipline my child for doing nothing wrong more

Downtown quality with low prices! 1/11/2008

Here's a Gold Coast classic - I love going to this place and stop by every few months. We were there last week - 3 of us. We had the bow tie pasta, a pizza and the rav special. Nice selection of wine and great service. Mario always stops by the table to check on us (he makes his rounds to every table) and makes us feel special. Very reasonalbe prices and large portions. Pros: large portions, Mario Cons: none! more

Neighborhood Gem 8/21/2006

Mario's happens to be in our neighborhood, but we would get in the car if were the only way to experience the combination of the ambiance, the people, the food to be sure, & the diners, which result in a very tasty experience. Well priced, prompt friendly service, and none the least, the best soft shells in Chicago. P&C Pros: Thumbs up, TV evident but sound off, generous servings more

Decent food at ridiculous prices 5/23/2006

I have been going here for years and always thought the food was great and very fairly priced. Over the past two years prices here have gone through the roof. I am not sure if Marios has remembered where it once came from but there are better priced places for the money. Maybe the establishment has decided to take advantage of all of the Gold Coast money...Go elsewhere. Pros: Good Ambiance, Good Food Cons: Highly over-Priced more

Marvelous Mario... 9/4/2005

I recently moved down to the Gold Coast, and fortunately, Mario's is at the end of my block! First I had a pizza delivered, and after seeing there full menu, decided to take a walk down there next time. What a great place! Nice neighborhood feel, wonderful food (try the steak or porkchop vesuvio!) friendly, capable service, and not too pricey, considering the neighborhood and the incredible quality and portions of the food. Nice place to grab an afterwork drink and an appetizer at the bar as well. Mario always makes sure to stop by your table to say hello and see how your meal is. I can't say enough about this place. Yet another example of why Chicago is so renowned for it's amazing cuisine! Pros: Waitstaff/Bartenders, Delicious Food, Delivery more

Best Kept Secret 10/17/2002

I found out about this place through a friend and have never been so pleased. It is quaint, romantic and delicious. The atmosphere resembles something of Italy but the prices are reasonable and the food outstanding. The wine list is exceptional and the staff pleasing. Mario, the owner is always there making friends with all the patrons. Those who know about this restaurant won't go anywhere else again for Italian. Pros: Outstanding Service, Comfortable, Inexpensive Cons: Not prime location, Limited Parking more

Owner Message

  • Mario's is a "Cheers"-like Gold Coast neighborhood joint where everyone knows your name. Most of the black leather booths and bar stools are usually taken up by neighbors who stop by after work to grab a drink and enjoy bow tie pasta, fettuccini and five-cheese lasagna while they watch TV or get acquainted with their fellow diners. It's a cozy atmosphere and also great for a romantic night out. Available for dine-in or carry-out, Mario is sure to make your meal complete with his great personal approach and delicious cuisine!

Editorial

  • Friendly garden-level Italian eatery serving fettuccine, veal saltimbocca and lasagna to folks perched in black leather booths.
