I like it 12/24/2010

I had so much food I had to have a box. It's a nice casual place to take the family. Go early so you don't have to deal with the crowds later. more

Consistantly mediocre food 5/25/2008

Nothing really special about this chain restaurant. If you enjoy a fake presentation with mediocre food and enjoy dining with the fashionable west enders, this place is for you. Service is good, just poor quality food. The place is always packed though. I suppose it's just like Can Can. The place to be seen, rather than some place to get some good food. more

should quantity make up for quality--or lack thereof? 2/29/2008

This was the venue for a fam dinner on a recent Sat eve. Just moved down here so I'm a novice to Richmond's dining scene. Can't say I had high expectations but after being informed that the wait is 1hr 15 mins I was eager to be pleasantly surprised. By the time we were seated I had done a round of expedited shopping and was sufficiently starved. Unfortunately, it would be close to another hour before our food arrived. The calamari and crabcakes starters were nothing spectacular. Crab was not of the best quality and horseradish in sauce was overpowering, to cover up the subpar quality of the crab? The fried calamari was tender but unfortunately the sauce it came only brings one thing to mind: watered down ketchup. Chicken parm followed. There?s only one thing I expect when I order this dish: tenderness. Three hunks of breasts that I?m pretty sure were never introduced to a meat mallet were served. No room to critique the two linguine dishes but needless to say they were less than impressive. I have to highlight the asparagus side dish, one of a few that we ordered. It was in a garlicky sauce that I thought was pretty good. I was working on them enthusiastically when I bit into one part and chewed...and chewed?and chewed. In all honestly I?ve never been served asparagus where the skin isn't peeled off the tough section or broken off altogether. EVER. And so I was stuck with a dilemma?whether to discreetly emit it or swallow against all instinct. In short, the entire experience was probably a 3 on a scale of 10 and not one I care to repeat. I have to admit the Pinot Noir I washed it all down with was fairly decent. Alas, it wasn't nearly enough to drown out my perplexity at why this venue was so packed.\r p.s. Ironically, it occurred to me that the food here is better suited for a casual dining chain. Coming from NYC I had never heard of Maggiano?s so I wasn?t aware that they are indeed a chain! My only problem is I don?t wait 1hr 15mins for a casual dining experience. more

Consistently great food 10/16/2007

Maggianos is always a win in my book. When I get tired of trying out new local restaurants, and want a good meal, I know I can always count on ""The Magg"" (what I call it). The ambiance is very old school Italian, and can get crowded, but the lighting is nice and dim, its a big restaurant, so lots of seating. And they always have Dean MArtin or Frank Sinatra playing. On Saturday nights, they have a musician, so that provides for even more ambiance. The bread is great here, not the best in the world, but very good. Certainly good enough for me to eat 4 slices of it (because I have zero discipline on cheat nights). Caesar salad is fab, and as people who have read my reviews know- the caesar will make or break the deal for me. THey have an appetizer there that is also not sold anywhere (at least I havent seen it)- Shrimp Orregenata. You see clam orregenata a lot, but not shrimp. This dish is to DIE FOR. AMAZING! I am not even a huge shrimp person, and this is amazing. Steaks are always good, as are the side dishes, and pretty much everything there. Its not #1 in any category (except shrimp orregenata), but its always fabulous food. And dont forget the awesome mints as you are leaving. I always steal a handful of those. :) Pros: shrimp orreganata, dessert, bread, caesar Cons: loud more

Terrible Service and average food. 4/16/2007

Service was bad and table and floor was not cleaned properly. I have to ask the waitress to clean pasta on floor lying in front of us. Waitress does not know anything about red wines and she was not smiling and friendly at all. We ordered salmon and it was not appealing at all did not taste like upscale dinning meal. Overall for the amount we spend for three people we did not have the upscale dining experince we were supposed to have. This Maggiano is not like other Maggiano's I tried at other locations. I might not go there again and I would not reccomend to others to expect alot from this Maggiano's. It does not match with other nearby upscale look and quality. Pros: Location Cons: Bad Service, Average Food and Pricey. more

Great Italian food, in a nice yet casual environment. 9/26/2006

I went to Maggiano's in Short Pump with my immediate family to 'audition' the food for my upcoming wedding reception. I had no idea what to expect, as I had never been to a Maggiano's before, but it was a very pleasant find. No one was told that I was there for reception consideration, as I did not was to be overly catered to in order to influence my decision. I just wanted to see what a 'typical' experience was like. Our server was very friendly and helpful with suggestions. The mushroom ravioli and stuffed mushroom appetizers were awesome, especially the ravioli. You could have just them for dinner & be happy. The salads were fresh & tasty, with lots of cheese & other veggies. The Rigatoni D was wonderful, and cooked perfectly-not overdone at all. Yay! I'm really picky about overcooked pasta, so having it al dente was a wonderful surprise. The beef tenderloins were amazing, and that's coming from a person who rarely orders beef. The lasagna was a disappointment, too much meat and a bit too heavy. The chicken Marsala was good, but only average in comparison to the more outstanding selections. My party felt it was a bit bland. The chocolate zuccotto cake and NY cheesecake were some of the best I have ever had. The atmosphere was a little loud, but everyone was dressed nicely and it had a more upscale casual feel. Just as a side note, we had the family style food. There are enough leftovers to feed a small country. The leftovers are even better the next day, if you can believe it! Definitely recommended to all! Pros: Great food, service, parking Cons: busy, a little loud, hard to see location from road if not familiar w/ area more
