False Advertisement? 7/5/2011

I walked in, reviewed the menu and proceeded to order by reading from the menu: ""I'd like the fresh squeezed Orange Juice please!"" I also ordered my breakfast. The guy behind the counter rang me up, collected my money and proceeded to reach into the fridge behind the counter and poor me my OJ from a store bought container. \r Not only was I charged $1.99 for horrible tasting, store bought OJ, but he failed to inform me that the menu was incorrect and that they did not actually serve freshly squeezed OJ. I was not happy with this visit. The dish was okay but no where on the menu did it mention that potatoes would be served with it. The potatoes were not near as tasty as the french toast. Thanks. more

Great hole-in-the-wall place 5/9/2011

My husband and I went to San Antonio for our anniversary as a weekend getaway. We went to Madhatters for breakfast one morning and really enjoyed it. It is a little hole-in-the-wall place but my hubs and I like that. Clean but quaint. The food was good, nothing extraordinary, but definitely a great place to just sit, relax, enjoy your coffee or your paper and take your time. No hustle and bustle of say IHOP or something of that sort. We enjoyed it and if we're ever back in San Antonio we would definintely go back. more

WillNotReturn 12/29/2010

The owners need to find better cashiers with better customer service skills and attitudes. My first visit to MadHatters showcased a cashier who when asked if they served hot tea, told me no. Maybe he was trying to be funny... but his delivery was bad. Second chance today with my sisters to celebrate a special occasion. A different cashier...still rude...long wait for food..... cold eggs (the one's on which my sister had a special request which prompted the cashier's rudeness.)....Won't be going there again...And I definitely will not recommend this place to anyone who asks...I would have rated ""0"" stars if it was possible... more

a great casual sunday brunch! 4/15/2010

for my birthday, me and my boyfriend went to madhatters for sunday brunch and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. the food was good, i had the tamales and eggs. and i had to get the bottomless fish bowl mimosa, which was on point. be forewarned though, if you're not absolutely sure you're gonna drink two or three rounds, the price (i think it was $13) isnt worth just one drink because they fill up your bowl (yes an actual fish bowl) pretty good. plus the food fills you up as well. i loved the decor and i would definitely come back! my only con would be parking. besides the handful of spaces in front on the restaurant, you have to parallel park on the street and walk. i didnt mind but others might. Pros: food and drinks Cons: parking more

the tea could be better 9/13/2008

Good food and great atmosphere. There is free wifi so it is a great place to go alone if you have a lot of time. I never had a problem with my order but i usually came earlier and i did see other people getting their orders at different times. (but the service is deli style where you order a counter and your food is brought to you. maybe they should have a combine order option. idk.) The food could actually be slightly better but it's still really good and i enjoyed it. \r \r my main complaint is the tea; it's pretty bad. there's more to tea than hot water and leaves and since tea is their primary drink they should really make an effort to improve that. \r \r nice place! Pros: atmosphere, food, service Cons: tea more

Hi it's Rene from Madhatters (President, dishwasher, payroll, busser, marketing) 9/4/2008

Hello everyone this is Rene at Madhatters Tea. I want to apologize for anyone who has had less than stellar service. After 15 years of providing a place to come and enjoy we obviuosly have made some mistakes. I wish I could contact you personally so that I can apologize face to face. There are times when I have been at my cafe working and things would just not go well at all. (to the point where I wonder if I made the right choice to continue in this business) Don't get me wrong, I am very proud of the last 15 years and again I am sorry when guests are not treated well. Thanks for your business, and let us know while in the cafe how we can make things better for you. 210-865-1296 is my cell number. Thanks, Rene Pros: Great food & atmosphere & service Cons: Occasional hick-ups more

Poor lunch choice 7/23/2008

Avoid if you are on any sort of time schedule. Forty minutes after ordering lunch (two sandwiches and a bowl of soup) and watching guests who arrived after me receive their food, I inquired with the kitchen if my table was coming up soon. They said we were up, and five minutes later one sandwich was delivered. Ten minutes after that, neither my meal, nor my companion's soup had been delivered, so we requested a refund for the undelivered food and had to return to work without lunch. Everyone elses food looked and smelled great. Pros: Food looked tasty Cons: My order was never delivered after waiting 55 minutes at lunch time more

worse tea house in the world 1/14/2008

As a world traverler and a connoisseur of tea, this is the worse tea house my family and I have ever come across. This place should be forbidden from being called a tea house and seems to bank on new customer verses customer loyalty. The King William district is definately the best part of being at the tea house. Shame on the proprietor of this so called tea house. The tea served was not properly measured for two cups, did not contain enough water for the tea to ""breath"", therefore the results were less than bitter. The so called tea sandwiches were merely stuffed with half an inch of cream cheese with half an inch of cucumber or few slices of salmon on thich half inch processed white bread with the crust cut of. Upon checking out and asked about how everything was, the cashier was informed about the severe dissappointment and given advise on how tea was prepared, he merely stated that only a $4 discount could be adjusted off of a $60.00 bill. No apologies or return voucher for a better experience. Would not recommend the establishment for tea or sandwiches. Pros: blueberry sconces large and sugary Cons: service, food prepartion more

Great atmosphere,good food BUT..... 8/27/2007

We visited MadHatters for the first time this weekend.Party for 4 and reservations were made.Seated fast,Staff friendly and helpful, and food was fresh and different than the norm. The only problem we had is that we ordered desert to go and two people ordered the Boston Cream Cheesecake and when we arrived home (over an hour later) we found that they had written correct thing on top but had substitued plain regular cheesecake.Very Disappointing. There was a large difference in price also. more

My favorite place for eggs benedict! 7/8/2007

I have become a regular at Madhatters. I love the funky cool ambiance and their unsual brunch specials. I've tried the Migas, Eggs Benedict and anything that they make with lamb. All have been fabulous. Their toast and breast are so good! They are probably the only place I know that makes soft poached eggs right! Pros: Cool location, great food. Great to people watch. You kinda do feel like you're in Alice in Wonderland. more

Cute place, but food not so much 1/12/2007

I ordered the cold chicken and spinach salad with terra chips. I was excited because i love me some chicken salad and it had sprouts and tomatos on it too-yum! BUT when i got it the chicken salad was like a big hard HUGE lump stashed in between really thick bread. I could barely get my mouth around it because the chicken salad was such a lump. I was actually a little worried it was old but i was starving so i trudged thru it. It had no seasoning in it at all, there was hardly any mayo in it and the combo of the spinach and chicken was actually nauseating! The terra chips were good and the sweet tea was tasty! But overall, not impressed. and its pricey- 10 bucks for the sandwich and tea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! more

Great place to study 10/12/2006

I love studying at Madhatters. The couches are really comfortable, there is free WiFi, and the tea selection is amazing. I really like the atmosphere and people there as well. The food is okay, but somewhat overpriced. Pros: Atmosphere, location, tea selection Cons: Food could be better more

Mediocre Dining, Exceptional Atmosphere 7/10/2006

If you are looking for a place to relax in a hip and modern environment, this is the place. Madhatters is relative quiet and good for sophisticated types of people. However, if you are looking for a place to enjoy a filling meal, think again! The prices are steep and the food is mainly for a lunch or light dinner.\r \r The biggest bonus about Madhatters is the location. This restaurant is located in the King William District, meaning fantastic places for all you art collectors and fashion elites! Pros: environment, nearby vendors Cons: prices, food more

They treated our group poorly! 3/24/2006

I brought a group there and am appalled at the service! I made a reservation; and was told there would be no problem. Our group got there pretty promptly around 11:45a.m. only to find they gave away our tables to some other group and they didn't have any other long tables set up for ours! The young woman's excuse was they assumed our group wasn't coming;no further explanation, no apology either. They quickly set up tables for nine ;so three in our group had to sit separately from the rest . To make things worse the other group got ""preferential treatment"" while our group was ""ignored"" ! I am still steamed about this. The food was good though. I will not be returning in the future. Pros: food was good, prices-reasonable, food prep-quick Cons: not enough parking, group ignored, poor customer service more

Changed for the worse 3/23/2006

Unfortunately, the new staff turnover has proven detrimental for Madhatters. What use to be one of our favorite places is now at the bottom of our list. The service and staff use to be so friendly, attentive, and caring - not the case today. Not only was the cashier rude but when we went to order dessert after our lunch, we turned around to find our entire table completely cleared. Our drinks were still 3/4 full and our belongings still sitting there! To boot, desserts tasted stale... Cons: limited parking, bad service , $$$ for light eating more

A Whole lotta bread! 8/17/2005

Today was my first time eating here. It's in a neat little atmosphere. There are several rooms to sit in. It was recommended that I try the turkey, avocado, chipotle cream cheese sandwhich. With it, I also got a salad. The sandwhich was mostly thick bread with not much in the middle. I could make a better sandwhich at home with my own sourdough bread. The salad was good....interesting flavors, and for $1.49 I got to try many flavors of herbal tea. Pros: relaxed, huge drink menu Cons: not enough parking more

A lovely quiet place 2/10/2003

Madhatters has to be my favorite restraunt. The food is always good and is usually a very unique twist to what would otherwise be mundane. Pros: Kitschy, Quiet, Fun Cons: Costly, Limited Menu, Limited Paring more
