Great place held back by inflexibility and condescension. 6/5/2010

The charming atmosphere of the outdoor dining area couldn't bear the weight of the limited and inflexible menu served by a staff that made me feel as if I'd never had brunch outside of a chain restaurant. Lucky's Cafe reminded me of places I've been in Maine with casual picnic tables in the midst of a garden. Our server started out charming and witty, but things took a turn when I wanted to order a dish called the Shipwreck without bacon. She asked the manager and the answer was ""no"". I then asked if I could have a side of scrambled eggs with an order of pancakes. Again the answer was ""no"" and the excuse was the small kitchen didn't allow them the luxury of substitutions. What I asked was for the kitchen to omit an item not substitute. Also, what breakfast place refuses to make a side of scrambled eggs?! My brunch companions thought the food was OK, but overpriced. The blueberry smoothies were exceptionally good, but not worth it at $5.95 each. I doubt I'll return to Lucky's when there are so many other great breakfast places nearby (Grumpie's, West Side Market Cafe) where side orders are commonplace and the service is better. Pros: Charming outdoor seating area, locally grown foods Cons: Total refusal to alter orders in any way more

Overrated 5/18/2010

The below reviews really hit the nail on the head with the problems at Lucky's. We had many of the same experiences. Pros: Organic and Locally Grown Cons: Long lines, overpriced, food just OK more

Good Food but ""Over Priced""! 10/24/2009

I had Biscuits & Gravy tasted good but not great and well Over Priced at $12.95 and my wife had the griddle cakes and that was Great! but that too was Over Priced at $12.95!! So breakfast for two with two coffees and Tip was $35.00!!! OUCH! Pros: Griddle Cakes Cons: Price! Price! Price! more

A real gem, ruined by an inflexible kitchen! 9/21/2008

A friend and I decided to have Sunday brunch at Lucky?s. It was our first visit and I very much wanted to find my new favorite weekend breakfast spot. Boy, was I let down! Pros: A garden seating area and creative menu. Cons: Kitchen refuses to remove ingredients due to preference or medical need. more

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE 7/9/2008

There was a very long line with no organization of where people were supposed to stand. The service was apathetic at best. The breakfast was very expensive for what we got, especially considering the ""affordable"" rating. I cannot have dairy (severe lactose intolerance) and when I asked for the omelette without cheese (not a substitution or something complicated) they told me there were no substitutions or special orders, even for food allergies. I was told I could eat the pancakes or tofu sautee (which I don't eat), so I ordered the pancakes, and they were covered in whipped cream (a milk product). Additionally, my boyfriend is severely allergic to gluten, and so he was told he could only have the tofu ""canoe- wreck."" Even this was touching a pile of toast (has gluten) and for him even if things are touching they can often set him off. When he asked for ketchup, he was literally given a bowl with less than a tablespoon of ketchup in it. Everything was unhealthy- my boyfriend's toast was drenched in butter, my pancakes were soaked in honey, caramel, whipped cream and syrup, and in the end, there was no warning on the website or the menu that there were no substitutions removals. The excuse we were given was the it was a small kitchen and they were busy. I have worked in several restaurants with even smaller kitchens, were just as busy, and it was never a problem to eliminate something as easy as cheese in an omelette. Considering our breakfast was $35, and we didn't enjoy any of it (because we couldn't eat it) it was an overall incredibly disappointing experience. Cons: prices, bad attitude, nothing for food intolerances, no substitutions or exclusions for allergies, food very unhealthy more

Best Brunch in Cleveland 5/10/2008

The chef serves big flavors and big portions of common dishes with a twist. Most offerings are made from local produce, meats, and dairy. Favorite breakfast and brunch items are the Shipwreck ( eggs, potatoes, vegetables, cheese, very big and tasty), the breakfast burrito (including a spicy mole-like sauce made in house), and the specialty waffles. They're serving lunch items now (salads, sandwiches, great mac and cheese). Brunch is an event on Saturdays and Sundays with seating outside during nice weather. This is where Cleveland's chefs take their families for brunch! Pros: Brunch, Coffee, Lunch, Ambience, Natural, Locally-grown Cons: Might be a line more
