Editorial review from Citysearch 9/11/2013

TERRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Worst and Rudest service I've ever experienced. I am a super nice kid who took a friend there for his last day of his vacation in NYC and we had a terrible experience. The server was RUDE. It took her over 15 minutes to greet us. She gave us tap water that tasted so rubbery that we couldnt drink it and then she said ""the water is fine"" and it was NOT. Then we never saw her again (a food runner brough our food to us that took forever and the server never checked up on us) until I had to leave my seat and go find her to ask for our check. I still tipped her well bc I try to be understanding and when I said Thank You she didnt answer and just nodded her head to walk away and get back to the other girls who work there to finish telling them a story. The girls who work there were so busy chatting with eachother that i notced all tables were being neglected. The food was bad and the service was even more awful more

This is a great bar right across from MSG. The food is fine and the service is great. I was always told that ppl in NY are mean and what not, but that couldnt be more false! The bartenders were very nice and pretty ;)i also liked their uniforms... I reccomend this place alll day! more

Big Beers 9/27/2011

Thanks for the big beer mugs, that certainly makes up for the fact that you rarely see you server - or that a few of the bar tenders have MAJOR 'TUDE. The less interactions you need to have with the staff, the better. Besides that, the place is nice, especially the newer outdoor patio area. Decent for an afterwork drink if you commute from Penn or work in the area. more

Good location 6/7/2011

So I went to local after work last week to meet up with a few friends that head home to jersey from penn station. Based on the fact this place is right there and has a roof it made for a great place to have a couple of drinks after work. This place does get packed as the area's usual suspects get out of work, but then again its midtown so what else can you expect. Get there early and there's probably less of a crowd. more

Stolen 8/5/2009

I was at Local relatively recently with some friends after work for drinks. We actually had a good time, up until the point where I looked down (within 5 feet of where I was standing) for my bag so I could leave, and it was gone. After much searching and talking to the manager (remember this - who said they rarely have any thefts there), I resigned myself to the fact that someone walked off with it. Cons: Things seem to go missing more

Trashy Bartenders 5/5/2009

I went there with my boyfriend before a Ranger playoff game, I walked away to use the bathroom and the female bartender was all up on him, but when she saw me coming back she backed off. Needless to say she slipped him her number and we are now broken up. Pros: After work crowd Cons: Trashy Bartenders more

Good Spot 11/19/2008

Great afterwork spot...drinks are good and the bartenders are hot - especially a short-haired brunette - anyone know her? However, management is just okay...could be much better, but the atmosphere is good and the help is great. more

Overpriced and TERRIBLE service 8/4/2008

I work at a restaurant right down the street from Local and always thoght it looked like a nice place to grab a few drinks on a beautiful sunny evening (not too many rooftops bars in midtown). Come to find out it is a complete rip off with lazy waitresses. My friend and I sat up on the roof (which was, admittedly, lovely) and waited a few minutes to be greeted by our server. She came over, took our drink order and came back 5 minutes later with a draft of Blue Moon that was only 3/4 full and one of their ""specialty drinks"". The ""special"" martini I had was delicious and quite strong but definilty not woth the 15 dollars I was charged for it (it was Stoli for christ's sake!). We got the hummus and pita plate which was very tasty. However, after ordering our snack and first round of drinks we didn't see our waitress for a good half hour to forty five minutes (correction, we saw her, made eye contact, tried to get her attention and were ignored). It was not even busy! As a waitress, I understand that sometimes you get slammed and accidently neglect a table because you are running your butt off. No, she was just sauntering around in her minidress and stilletos trying to look hot while not doing her job. We did see the busboys a lot. They were very eager to clear our drinks and our waters while we were still drinking them (nearly half full). We get our check and the martinis were overpriced at 15 bucks(however understandable as they were house specialties), but 8 dollars for a COORS LIGHT? People can say ""well, it's midtown"" all they want, but I work at a place down the block that caters to the same corporate crowd and coors light is $5.50. So, we hardly saw the waitress all night but then she gives us the check and hovers over our table like a vulture waiting for her tip. We only left a 15 percent tip (normally leave 25-30) and would have left considerably less, but both being waitress, fear karmic retribution. I would be fired for the kind of service we received. Pros: roof top Cons: Very poor service, way over-priced drinks more

Great Roof, Great Service 5/24/2008

Love this place for their fantastic roof. Good place to stop in for a drink before a show at MSG or Hammerstein. Gets packed after work, so try and get their early if you want to snag a seat. Pros: Roof Bar, Happy Hour Cons: Midtown Prices more

He swung first!! 3/6/2007

I will admit I used to be an avid fan of local west. Not b/c of the great service (one chick refused to serve me b/c I called her ""Sweet T*Ts"", but i thought coming from a girl that would be a compliment) or the great food, or good drinks (I only drink Heiny Bottles it's not too hard to mess up) but simply bc the location to MSG. I would stumble out of a game and always end up there. Last night, after the Rangers Islanders game was no different. Why a bar located directly across from MSG would not put security on for a rangers islanders game I have no idea!!! The place was packed w/ islanders fans who were starting fights w/ every Rangers fan that was in there. Long story short...Some 6'2"" ""man"" Thought it was acceptable to swing at me a 5'4"" chick. And while all this ruckus was going on...Noone stopped serving beer! No manager available to talk to me, no bouncer on duty. So i was left to fend for myself. So yes I did p*nch him, but only b/c he tried to h!t me first. Apparently it's every man for themselves in Local. Pros: Heineken Bottles Cons: Lack of security more

Looks can be deceiving... 2/27/2007

I recently popped into Local for some drinks and appetizers before heading over to the Knicks game. I thought I was going to really impress my beautiful date with what was a really nice looking place. Well, it actually is a really nice place and she was impressed. That was until we had some unexpected company join us at our table. Right as we were halfway through our beers, wings and nachos, a tiny, let's say non-human, made himself cozy right on our table. Ordinarily I wouldn't mind, but I was on a hot date and this four legged ""thing"" wasn't exactly invited. I kindly asked it lo leave, i.e. I threw every piece of artillery I could find in its general direction and it escaped my wrath. I know what you're thinking: this guy is sooo smooth. Well, stop laughing because luckily for me, I am pretty smooth. So I was able to divert attention away from this unfortunate experience and get back some semblance of what started as a promising evening. We could no longer eat, but we still drank our beers, albeit at a much quicker rate. But just as the waitress threw down the check, our little friend made his second appearance of the night. And all hell broke loose when it made an offensive remark that was directed at me. Ok, well I made that last part up, he was actually quite cordial, but the rest of this is true. There was no counter attack this time; we just paid the bill and ran. Not ever, EVER, in 8+ years of drinking, have I ever had to leave a purchased beer unfinished. That is unacceptable and downright disgusting. As for our unexpected companion...also disgusting. This was truly one of the mostuncomfortable bar experiences I've ever had. I was going to give this bar a 2 rating, but since my date hasn't returned any of my calls since, I am downgrading that to a 1 for my pain and suffering. But hey, I'm an optimist so If you're ever looking to NOT get with someone, this is the place to go to. Pros: serves beer Cons: cleanliness issues more

Decent place, but music is too loud for happy hour...please turn music down...oh and happy hour ends at 6pm 2/21/2007

this place is ok. not a bad place to hang out after work if you're in the area. but, who wants to have music that you can't talk over with your friends, especially after work? just turn it down please! more

nice people & great heated patio 12/13/2006

i just hosted an afterwork party at Local West and b/c of the moderate weather the manager Frank suggested we might want to use the heated outdoor patio as an alternative to their lounge, what a great idea, the change of scenery in december was pretty cool, nice change of pace, i'm becoming a fan of global warming! the staff was so pleasant and the whole party went off without a hitch, it was low-key but high energy , thanks to Local West for making me look like a planning superstar! Pros: heated patio, helpful staff, so close to Penn Station Cons: a bit crowded more

Great for sports and awesome rooftop deck in the spring/summer/fall 12/11/2006

Great place to go for drinks after work and to watch games! Pros: sports, rooftop, bartenders Cons: manhattan prices, but as expected more

MISERABLE PLACE TO WASTE YOUR MONEY 11/30/2006

DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY PLAY AWFUL MUSIC AND THE BAR IS FULL OF MSG AND PENN STATION TRASH. THERE ARE HOMELESS PEOPLE AROUND THE ENTRANCE AND PATIO AND HAVE SEEN THEM IN THE RESTROOMS SEVERAL TIMES, THE ONLY REASON I HAVE BEEN THERE MORE THAN ONCE IS BECAUSE I WORK AROUND THE BLOCK AND GET DRAGGED THERE. LAST TIME I WAS THERE THE BARTENDER OFFERED TO BUY ME AND MY FRIENDS AROUND OF SHOTS FOR ALL OF US AND HERSELF THEN CHARGED THEM TO MY CREDIT CARD, I ASKED TO SPEAK TO THE MANAGER, HIS NAME IS FRANK SCOTTO, AND HE TOLD ME TOUGH SH__, THATS NOT HOW THIS BAR WORKS, THE BARTENDERS DONT BUY SHOTS. ---------------------ONLY GO TO THIS PLACE IF YOU ARE HOMELESS AND NEED TO USE THE RESTROOM--------------------------- Pros: good for a homeless shelter Cons: bad music, people, staff, drinks, food, you name it, its bad more

****DO NOT GO- BAN THIS TERRIBLE PLACE-**** WORST BAR IN NYC*****FRANK SCOTTO-TERRIBLE 11/30/2006

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO TO LOCAL WEST!!! This place is byfar the worst place in all of Manhattan. It is the most corrupt bar in the city- they WILL overcharge you terribly at this place. The bartenders are the RUDEST people in the world. They are all terrbile people, who for some reason feel that are better than the patrons, and will ROB you if you open up a tab. I have been overcharged soo many times at this place, but never really cared, until the other night they decided to overcharge me almost $90 over what i had bought. All the bartenders/ waitreses are terrible people with no future- one in particular blonde with 2 HUGE fake.....is the worst of them all- do not go to this place, and if you do- do not tip this woman. worse than her is the manager FRANK SCOTTO- this guy is an idiot that has no idea how to manage a bar- Pros: NOTHING Cons: EVERYTHING- FRANK SCOTTO- THE SERVICE- THE FACT THAT THEY BASICALLY STEAL YOUR MONEY more

Not impressed 8/23/2006

Walking into this bar was like walking into a meat market on Long Island. If thats your scene, then youll probably enjoy happy hour at Local West. Also, be aware: the daily drink specials arent available on the roof deck and the building is only one storey tall, so the great view of the Garden that some reviewers mention is basically the same one you get from the street. The main bar, back patio, and roof deck are all much smaller than expected, too, and showing some definite wear & tear on the out-of-the-box trappings. Our waitress was friendly, though, and the music was ok. All in all, this place is nothing special and is definitely not the oasis some reviews claim it isMaybe Im too cynical, but the fact that many of those positive reviews were posted on the same day makes me suspect they have been planted. Pros: nice waitress, outdoor space, near Penn Station Cons: loud, crowded, tacky more

Roof worth the extra 2 8/22/2006

Local is my regular pre-train pit-stop and I'm surprised to hear so many people complain about the prices. A $2 surcharge for the roof may seem ridiculous at first but $8 a beer on a rooftop in Manhattan is standard. If you're that cheap, stay on the patio where the drinks are less expensive. The service could be more enthusiastic, and these girls in short skirts have been known to retaliate full force when prevoked. Regardless, there's no other place like it anywhere near penn station. Pros: pretty bartenders, roofbar, + food Cons: overcrowded more

Great management and service! 8/22/2006

I planned a party for about 40-50 here. I spoke to the manager, Frank, who set me up with a great open bar and buffet package. I was a bit skeptical at first but when I got there, everything was perfect. The bartenders and waitress's were great. The rooftop is great and the food was slamming. There was no hassle getting in and it was a pleasure speaking with everyone in there from the bouncer to the waitress's. Only problem I had was the music because there was no hip hip or reggae. If you like house music, then this place has no drawbacks. But the manager was nice enough to tell the DJ to put on the Hip Hop XM station since she had no Hip Hop material. Wonderful experience. I would highly recommend this place for any group looking to have get-together in a non-crowded atmosphere. Pros: Penn Station is across the street. Food, drinks, and service is great. more

Finally a Cool Spot near MSG! 2/9/2006

Local West is by far the best bar near MSG and its so much bigger than the east side location! The rooftop is huge and the interior is very nice. Stiff drinks, good grub and very convenient. Pros: clean, lounge, drinks strong more
