Walk passed this place all the time and I finally decided to go in - great decision!

The Library isn't bad for a dive, but I can't believe it's currently #1 for Best of Citysearch in the category of Date Spot! It's dark, loud, and generally unfriendly.

Come Here! 6/1/2011

Kristen and Thursday nights are AMAZING 10/21/2009

this place has gotten a great makeover. its still got the grime of a LES bar, but they re-did the bathrooms (CLEAN, with MIRRORS!!) and the bar it self has cleaned up, not so grungy and dirty as it used to be. Thursday nights with Kristen are half price for chicks all NIGHT!! go!! and put on some social distortion on the jukebox :) Pros: big yummy drinks, hot bartenders, NEW CLEAN BATHROOMS more

Seedy, deliciously so. 2/10/2008

Alright... how to begin? This IS the lower east side bar. You have to be looking for an experience if you're going to have a good time here- the main attractions are the crazy kung fu/ horror movies playing on constant rotation, the ridiculously loud punk music, and rock-n-roll bartendresses. They will give you an attitude, and if you want to keep up you have to have a sense of humor . This place is not pretentious- the bathrooms are nasty (and I can personally attest to having quickies in there), the drinks (especially the shots) are very large and very strong, and the music and regulars can be obnoxious. This is what people miss about the LES. If you keep your eyes open you can meet awesome people here. As in artists, Burning Man attendees, body piercers and the like. Pros: THE les bar Cons: Not relaxing, you have to be confident to have any fun. more

Best Dive I've ever seen. 7/2/2007

I've travelled all over the world both as a tourist and on business, but I must say that this is the greatest dive that I've ever seen. It possesses both the charm of a centuries old irish pub and the hipness of an old-school punk bar. The bartenders are skilled yet down to earth. Be sure to stop in on a Thursday to see Kristin. She must have been the most endearing whiskey-slinger that I've ever met. After all, it's not every day that a hundred-pound girl can outdrink me. Pros: Everything Cons: There's only one more

Best Lushy bartenders 11/25/2006

you can walk into library bar any day , at any time and you are guaranteed to leave drunk and with a smile on your face. girls are always welcomed - I recently ended up in there on a saturday afternoon with my girlfriends and we had such an fab time getting drunk with the super sweet bartender. Best of all we never felt uncomforable with our fellow boy customers at any time. Pros: Friendly lushy bartenders, cheap drinks, great jukebox Cons: can get super busy more

Most average place I've ever been to 10/21/2006

This was amazingly average. Not great, not bad. Drinks were not too water downed nor too strong. Menu wasn't particularly impressive nor noticeably lacking, the clientele wasn't especially pretty or epecially ugly. Just average in every way. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, it's as good a bar to visit as any other. But probably not worth a special trip. more

best daytime drinking 9/14/2006

this place is by far one of the most entertaining spots to drink in mid afternoon... The bartender is always talkative and there are no egos lurking. The locals are entertaining themselves! You never know whos gonna enter on an average afternoon! The girls are usually making crafts like happy hour cards and get pretty vulgar..just how i like it! Make sure you offer them a shot because they are always up for it! Watch out for the haunted toilets though...esp. weekends when there is a puddle of yellow to step over.. Pros: Kendra Kristin Jaime Christine and Taco Cons: mysterious bathrooms haha more

Best Bloody Mary in the world 9/13/2006

I love this bar. The bartenders are really nice, and the drinks are strong. It is a favourite for the true locals of the LES, and the regulars are real interesting. No posers, just real people. They play weird B movies on the projector with n@ked chicks, which is pleasent but also creepy. The bartenders are really fun and crazy. Characters. Pros: Alchol Cons: You have to give them money or they wont give you it. more

the best ever! 9/10/2006

Great bar.... even better jukebox! The bartenders are always friendly and make their drinks strong as hell. Pros: soap and toiletpaper always in the bathroom, jamie, kristen Cons: bathroom is gross more

Best Bloody Mary!!!!! 9/9/2006

Best bloody mary I have ever had. First of all the bartender made a homemade batch of hot pepper vodka and pickled spicy beans. My favorite thing about this place is the service. The bartender always seemed to know when I needed my drink refilled no matter how busy the bar got. Also they have awesome drink specials. 2 for 1 anything behind the bar. And the girl who works sunday night is freakin hot. Pros: service more

This a great place because the bartenders. 9/25/2005

I love the bartenders and I love kendra. The place is great and just an all aorund fun time., more

going downhill, sort of.. 4/2/2004

library used to be one of the coolest bars, that is, until the owners hired some bartenders that just don't have the personality for the job. they lack a sense of connectedness and fun, and they're just kind of miserable. BUT other things haven't changed-if you like good independent label music and hanging out with interesting, smart, artistic, somewhat antisocial people (aside for some suits that hang out during h-hour) then this is the place. Don't try to make friendly with the new bartenders, just get your 2 for 1 and play your smiths social distortion and big star. Pros: indie rock juke, happy hour, bar views onto street Cons: , corny owners, sometimes too loud more

What is not to Like 8/1/2003

The people I know there are cool. The owner owns Eddies next store so you can order food in. The cheesy movies are fun to watch. The happy hour is Sun-Sat. I'm not a big fan of Indie bands music but it's not the worst. And they take good care of me. Pros: Liz, Erin,Vickey, Sunday Afternoons, Good Happy Hour more

Best Date Spot?? WTF? 7/22/2003

The Library isn't bad for a dive, but I can't believe it's currently #1 for Best of Citysearch in the category of Date Spot! It's dark, loud, and generally unfriendly. more

Too bad 5/8/2003

I read a reviewer's comments about how it's getting worse and worse, and I'll have to somewhat agree. Now, they don't show movies as much, just cable tv, the music's gotten a lot louder (are the barmaids going deaf? Is that why? i dunno....), and the vibe's different. Also, when I went there, one of the barmaids actually turned off all of the songs I requested on the juke box. It's really too bad, cuz I once really liked this place. Although the happy hour on Saturdays is good, and that barmaid is still cool. Pros: good happy hour, happy hour barmaid, good locale Cons: rude barmaids more

never again 3/26/2003

this place has been getting more and more obnoxious as the years wear on. The last and THE LAST time we were there the music was so loud there was no hearing each other even while screaming and after waiting at the bar for a long time trying to get service, the bartender had the nerve to tell us she couldn't make a martini because it took too long to chill the glass. Unbeleivable. more

Save Me A Spot At The Bar 1/9/2003

What's not to like? Best damn jukebox in the city. Best damn happy hour in the city. Best damn bartenders in the city. Everyone is friendly. I have made friends and business contacts there during the last year that I have been frequenting the place. If you like Bud, Bourbon, and Rock and Roll pull up a stool and got some catching up to do. Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly Service, Great Music Cons: I can't think of any more

dark, dingy, loud... not in a good way 12/20/2002

This place seems to have the so-unhip-it's-hip thing going on. And if you go in for the squallid atmosphere and ordinary/dull/creepy crowd (at least the one Friday I was there), maybe this is your kind of place. I like low key, but this bar was just dank and unpleasant. Won't be returning any time soon. more

Music, beer, and woman 8/2/2002

I had to laugh at the previous descriptions of the service. I love this bar. Great rock atmsophere, with the best juke as they have been voted for. I have never had a problem with the service this but I have seen it be a problem with others. They think I'm cute and i'm one of the lucky ones they pay attention to so I'm not complaining. And when I get belligerantly drunk they never remember it so I love them for it. more

A taste of the old-school 5/19/2002

The Libarary is one of those great old-school East Village places. Small, dark kind of dirty, music's too loud (but great tunes) and some of the clientele a little scary. But when you're in the mood to escape the new yuppie lounge scene, it fits the bill. Bar shows great cheesy movies, too. more
