The market is dirty, the staff in unfriendly, and the offerings are not exactly gourmet. I was looking to make carpaccio with arugula and went to Lexington Market, which was convenient from my home in Bolton Hill. I couldn't find arugula and the staff at two stalls had no idea what I was talking about nor did they have any burning desire to help me. The tenderloin for the carpaccio was fine, but the place is so dirty and smelly I had a tough time trusting the meat completely. I would stay away from this hole, tradition and history be damned. more

everything you ever wanted - under one roof! 12/20/2005

Lexington market is a real treat to go to. Make sure you bring cash, as most merchants here do not take credit/debit cards. You'll find all kinds of produce, fresh fish and meats, and prepared foods. The prices are excellent - it is easy to get a great meal for under $5. The sheer number of stalls can be overwhelming, so take some time to wander around and look at all the choices - something is bound to make your mouth water. Take your meal upstairs, where there are tons of tables to sit down at. In the past, Lexington Market had something of a crime problem, but they've done a lot to clean it up, and it is a pretty safe place to go. I've eaten there many many times and have never felt unsafe. more

Nice food stands, not a good area of town 10/1/2005

Lexington Market is a food market in downtown Baltimore. I've only been in it once and that was enough! While they did have many food stands that looked like they sold wonderful fresh produce, meat, and international foods, the area is scary. There are pickpockets and thiefs all over and I hear it's riddled with crime. We (students at UMB) are warned not to go up there at night. Though grocery stores are lacking in the downtown area I'd personally make the drive out of town to shop instead of going there. However, during a weekday in the middle of the day it's probably ok. more

A Great Shopping Experience 8/19/2005

Welcome to Lexington market, which was established in 1782 and is the oldest continuously running market in the United States. You will be able to treat your self to all kind of wonderful foods. The market has a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, prepared ethnic foods. And for dessert there are bakeries chocolates and more. This is a wonderful experience. more
