Mai Japanese Restaurant Reopens! 9/14/2008

Mai Japanese Restaurant Website: wwwmaicharlottecom\r \r The owner of Mai Japanese Restaurant reopened it's doors again in another area, currently labeled Yotto Japanese Restaurant (name expected to be 'Mai' Japanese Restaurant soon). Their location can be found in the shopping center located at the intersection of Colony and Rea Rd.\r \r Just as before, they still rank as my favorite sushi place to go. Everything is fresh from the Rainbow rolls to the California rolls, nigiri, sashimi, and the slices and sizes of the sushi are larger than what you receive at most other sushi places. All platters come served decoratively, beautiful and colorfully done. Even the unique Bento boxes and the succulent Teriyaki Beef entrees are made perfectly tender, flavored, and juicy. All the food is authentic Japanese food, made from experienced Japanese chefs, even their menu items are in Japanese names, but thankfully all items come with a description to aid those in the non-fluent.\r \r I ranked this as 5 stars because of their brilliance of authentic Japanese foods, their perfection in the display of the food, the smiling and accommodating staff, and the mastery in their sushi. Even then so I'm pleased they still make their infamous Sapporo rolls and their unique pistachio rolls, though you'll have to special request them as they're not on the current sushi menu. Pros: Freshness sushi, great service, authentic Japanese food, safe location Cons: Not recommend parties of 30 or more, unless you reserve the entire restaurant. more

Mai closed 5/1/2007

The previous ""not bad"" review was written after Mai closed. The restaurant, which was my favorite sushi in town, closed earlier this year. Maybe the last reviewer ate at the restaurant that opened in Mai's location? more

Not Bad 4/26/2007

The place is definitely not owned by Japanese. The sushi are pretty decent considering it is not made by Japanese. I will probably go back again for the rolls but not the sashimi. Pros: Service Cons: Sashimi more

Good food - WORST SERVICE 7/16/2006

I'll start with the positives - there was no wait on a Thursday night, and the food was pretty good. I got the Chicken Terayaki - the Miso soup was probably the best I've had. My date ordered sushi. They brought my food out in a timely manner, and said hers would be right out. After 5 minutes I started to eat mine. After 10 minutes, I didn't want my food to get cold so we shared a little. 25 minutes, yes 25 minutes later, I had finished my food and she still hadn't gotten hers. Nor did a waiter stop by to apologize or tell us what was going on. \r \r There were only a few other tables with people so it was not because they were busy.\r \r I put money on the table and we left. We had a movie we had bought tickets for so she ended up having to eat popcorn for dinner.\r \r I will never go back there and do not recommend it, no matter how good the food is. Pros: Food was good Cons: Most impolite and slowest service I've ever seen. Unbelievable. more

Best so far... 5/16/2006

After reading all the great reviews we decided to try it out. The service is HORRIBLE but the food wasn't bad. The one reviewer who stated that the food is as good as NY and LA must have really bad luck finding sushi restaurants. I just moved here from LA and MAI doesn't come even close. The tuna was great and the salmon looked as if it was stored on the counter for about 2 hours. The price is great per roll but the rolls are tiny so be prepared to break out the MC/VISA. All in all, it is the best we've had so far and I would go back. more

best sushi in town 3/27/2006

the sapporo roll is to die for ....eel crab tuna salmon.... a nice hot sauce served with thin crisp potato fries.... a meal in itself.. the dragon roll is another twist ...both these rolls are specialties of the house..if you get to know the owner ""minisan"" he will always try to accomodate your needs and maybe bring you a surprise every once in a while... the service at the sushi bar is excellent, and is improving in the main resturant...its a great experience in japanese dining Pros: food, presentation, authencity Cons: location more

Great Food, Horrible Service 2/22/2006

Me and several friends have been to Mai multiple times. Everytime we are there we always have good food but, are not provide decent service. On different occasions we have had problems with the staff keeping our drinks filled and seeing if we needed anything else. We would always be waiting on the wait staff to come by. It seemed like the wait staff was enjoying conversing with each other on the other side of the restaurant. Out of 5 visits, only 1 (Japanese lady as our waitress) did we have excellent service. Also, I would like to add that at most of these occassions, the amount of patrons in the restaurant was relatively low. Pros: Food Cons: Service more

Good Sushi Here 11/10/2004

I've tried sushi in almost every eatery in CLT and unless there's some magical experience awaiting me, I think I've found my regular at the rice-laden pesce Mai. What made this place memorable was not only the freshness of the fish and perfectly seasoned rice but the the pieces were actually larger than most. The rolls were inventive but just average. We had the spider roll, tempura roll, hawaiin roll and a few others. I'd stick to the sushi pieces. The salmon was amazing and the unagi was terrific. I can't wait to go back. I'm looking forward to trying I on East. Pros: Fresh fish, Nice-sized pieces more

Excellent 12/19/2003

Let's face it, whether you are a Charlotte native or new to the area, you know that good sushi is in short supply in the Queen City. Mai has an excellent atmosphere, authentic cuisine and very good sushi. I was a little hesitant to go to Mai at first due to the location, but once I started, I have become a regular. On my most recent trip, I was at the sushi bar when a large party of Japanese men came in. Watching their interaction with the staff and seeing what the sushi chef prepared for them (incredible sashimi presentation!) made me appreciate even more the authenticity of Mai's fare. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Pros: sushi, atmosphere, friendly staff Cons: location more

Looks Can Be Deceiving 5/4/2003

I had read good things about it, so I went with my family. When I saw the outside I was completely bummed. It looked so small and unattractive! We decided to check out the interor though, and we were pleasantly surprised. Hardwood floors, simple seats, and clean lines make the architecture feel fresh. The windows are screened with rice paper patterns, so light comes in but you dont see the highway. The staff was helpful, the food was exquisite, and it was relatively inexpensive for Japanese food. If you aren't yet convinced, about half of the customers in the restaurant were Japanese. When large numbers of Japanese people come to eat at a Japanese restaurant, you can safely assume that the food is authentic and delicious. Overall, it is the best Japanese restaurant I have ever been to. Don't let the exterior appearance deter you, Mai is a gem! Pros: Great food, Wonderful interior, Helpful servers Cons: Location, Exterior more

Mai Wins the Blue Ribbon! 8/20/2002

I travel 5 days a week for work and I try a sushi restaurant in every city I visit. Mai takes the blue ribbon. It is always fresh and tasty. The sushi chef will get inventive if you give him the go ahead and prepare some of the most innovative and delicious sushi I've ever had. Better than most restuarants even in NY and CA. They're other traditional Japanese fare is great also, I especially like the noodle dishes and the chilled tofu. Yummy! more
