Much better than expected! 6/8/2010

I met a friend for lunch at this restaurant near Columbia University and enjoyed it much more than expected given the horrible reviews I had read... The service was ok-not incredibly attentive but passable. We each had the prix fix lunch which was PLENTY of food. It was a bit pricey for lunch (around 17$) however it was three courses. Pate starter was a nice start with delicious toast. Sauteed salmon with crispy skin was delicious over lentils. Vanilla cheesecake just ok-a bit dry. My friend had cold gazpacho which was said had a spicy kick. Was a fun and tasty lunch overall. Pros: nice menu, prix fix lunch with good size portions Cons: expensive lunch more

What a ripoff! 1/22/2010

Tonight my husband and I ordered the bouillabaisse special ($21.00 a plate). My plate contained 4 mussels, 2 shrimp, some tiny mess in the middle that might have been a very small piece of fish, a slice of potato and sprig of fresh rosemary. The most expensive item on the plate was probably the rosemary. It was also tepid. The total amount of food was equivalent to a small appetizer. This was the most egregious bit of price gouging to which I have been witness. Maybe I don't get out much. When we complained, the manager told us that that was ""what they always send out on Friday"". We left and went to Henry's and had a GIANT bowl of mussels for $16.00. Very nice atmosphere AND you don't get Pros: Looks nice Cons: Smallest portions on earth more

Great place ... 12/10/2009

... if you like to be insulted, looked down upon and have your needs ignored. A great plus is the management's indifference to complaints. Let's see how long it would take the management to mark this ""not helpful"" Pros: I miss rude people and they have them Cons: Having this place open. more

Great Place 11/7/2009

I go out dining all of the time and Le Monde is one of my favorite places. It looks nice, good service and good value on the food. I am not sure what the over priced comments are all about. Peppercorn steak at that price is a great deal, not to mention five dollar beautiful desserts. more

Excellent 11/5/2009

service, food and drinks all connected at the same time to give us the best experience ever. Thanks Le Monde Pros: best food & pastry ever Cons: nothing more

good brunch 10/17/2009

Weekend brunch here is excellent. A lot of people say something cockeyed, talk out of the side of their mouth about the french, but word, they can cook. Le Monde remains the shining star of morning side heights. Their french toast transcends any simplistic bread and egg formula, it is milky, sweet, and yet not in any way undercooked. It is as complex a french toast as you'll find in the city or the Hamptons. Pros: food well prepared Cons: weak, overpriced cocktails more

no bad 9/3/2009

i have eaten here a few times with friends from school. not that it is the best food i have ever had but the service was friendly and accommodating, it is my go to place for mussels! Pros: relaxed attmospher Cons: can be loud more

Beyond rude 8/17/2009

We have been there a few times. Sometimes everything is fine, sometimes not. Just like any other place. This time it was different. I have been insulted in my life before. Not like this. Not only were we humiliated and laughed at, we were pretty much told that we were being and would be discriminated against. And if we felt like that was not fair, we could leave. The way the Jennifer the manager said, ""have a nice day"", really sounded like, ""Go blip yourself"". All we asked was a table where a disabled person could be sitting. While telling us ""no"", they, BEFORE our eyes seated 2 people there and looked at us with a spiteful pleasure. Quite sick if you ask me. Oh BTW, you can write them ""feedback"" on their site all you want. They will not grace you with a reply. Please do not give them your money, they do not deserve it. Pros: Close to home Cons: rude rude rude more

Glad I Ventured Out While I was All the Way Up Here 7/15/2009

So I went to go visit my friend uptown here and I was actually surpised how nice it was. Claire, my friend, suggested we go to Le Monde to eat and it was really a perfect place. The setting/decor was unmatched, truly spectacular. I am suprised to read the other reviews because I really didn't think the food was overpriced for what it was, I see the reviews are from almost a year ago so maybe something has changed? The portions were perfect in both size and flavor. I may just have to venture back up here for this restaurant alone. more

Happy Meal..... 10/10/2008

This place is a BIT overpriced, but I was overall pretty happy with my meal there. The have a big wine selection, and their french snail for an appetizer is FANTASTIC, highly recommend it. Their dishes are yummy and well-presented, the service is attentive. If you're looking for a relatively quiet, low-key, but classy place to dine. I would recommend to anyone Pros: outdoor dining, food Cons: rude staff more

Le Ripoff 6/28/2008

On a beatuiful Saturday afternoon whilst walking past Le Monde with a friend, we decided, why not? The space is very attractive. That was all. The service was mundane. I ordered a vodka; the glass was the size of a specimen bottle. After ordering a couple of more drinks, we decided to order some food. This is a paltry excuse for French food. When the bill arrived, to say that it was pricey is an understatement. We were both very underwhelmed by Le Monde. You can't eat pretty spaces. Pros: Very pretty space Cons: Everything else more

Nice Space, Awful Place 6/21/2008

What good is a restaurant when the only thing you can recommend is the deep red leather and dark wood? We stopped in for light refreshment and snack, and felt like our wallets were stolen ($98 + tip for two of us). The staff were beautiful and polite on the surface, but quite soulless. For the exhorbitant price, we received food that barely qualified as mediocre and seriously overpriced, small, watered-down drinks. I know this is a Columbia joint, but I thought the students and staff had better taste than this. Perhaps Le Monde is bending to the Mid-west taste bud? But, good French food, says the true New Yorker, it is NOT! Pros: Warm (physical) ambience Cons: Everything else more

Good neighborhood bistro 5/30/2008

I've eaten here many times, and haven't had any of the bad experiences described in other reviews. Service is sometimes slow, especially on busy nights, but that's my only real complaint. The menu isn't especially imaginative, but the restaurant does the French bistro standards well, and it's a pleasant place to eat. Weekly specials tend to be particularly good. more

Sometimes great; other times not so much 2/18/2008

I've been to this restaurant several times and, alternately, I've had one of the best steaks I've ever tasted and one of the worst pieces of fish (sea bass) I've ever been served. I was there recently and ordered the sea bass with a red wine sauce and mushroom risotto. To be fair, the mushroom risotto was delicious - cooked perfectly - not pasty, not runny. Just perfect. And the red wine sauce was superb. But that sea bass. That fishy, rubbery, not very fresh sea bass. Ruined the meal. But I would give this place a shot. The ambiance is very sidewalk cafe French - especially in the Summer when there is seating outside. And the service is usually competent and friendly. Pros: Had a great steak once, authentic French feel to the place, good service Cons: Had some bad sea bass another time, noisy more

A very average place 2/17/2008

My boyfriend and I went there on Valentine's day as it is one of our favorite places--nice ambience, friendly service, caters to his meat tastes and my veggie tastes, and a decent meal without having to break the bank. However, I must admit that over the 3-4 times we have been there, it can be your luck that day in terms of the tastiness of the food. His risotto with sea bass was alright--the risotto was good but the fish was not as fresh as it could have been. And my veggie options were pretty sad too--the lasgna was not spiced well and lacked flavor and taste. And for a French place, the dessert was disappointing--we ordered black and white chocolate mousse with a biscuit crust or something like that. Take a chance--it might be good or if not, you know what to expect. more

Good if you don't have standards 12/16/2007

Everything about Le Monde is terrible. Both service and food were absolute garbage. We've never seen such disregard for the customer. We can honestly say we have had better meals at Tom's across the street. One of us got the cassoulet and it was the most wretched concoction we have ever seen. If we wanted a dry sausage in tomato paste we could have made it in the dumpster out back for a fraction of the price. We did however, despite the server's COMPLETE ineptitude, mange to pick a decent wine out of the rather large list. The space is ""nice"" and other people seemed to be having a good time. Overall, one might drop in if the weather is terrible and there is no other option, but we wouldn't recommend it. Pros: Warm. has wine Cons: Everthing more
