Don't Believe the Hype! 9/5/2004

We were quite dissappointed with the level of service and quality of the food for the $$$. Meager portions as well as dried out entrees are just to say the least. Not only were we seated an HOUR after our scheduled reservation, but upon being seated, it took almost an hour for our entrees to come out. Meanwhile, tables that were seated well after us had already completed their meals before we even recieved ours. While the waiter made an attempt to rectify our dissatisfaction by bringing over complementary dessert, it was not enough to make us want to return. If you choose to go against our advice and dine here anyway, stay away from the tenderloin. It was more like tug-a-loin, as it was so tough and dry that we sent it back. The decor is elegant and instantly makes you feel like you are in old Europe. The service from the waitstaff is impeccable. Appetizers and desserts are to die for.... however, the main course left me unsatisfied. It was slow getting to the table and the then the halibut was dry. Hearing that this is one of the most renowned haute cuisine in NYC, I had very high expectations going into dining at Le Cirque. The restaurant is beautiful and the service was great but the food was just ok. Definitely not up to par considering the prices. I have eaten at many a fine restaurant and know a great meal and Le Cirque did not deliver. We had a 9:30 reservation, we were seated at 11:00, needless to say, the service was severely lacking (except for the bar tenders who were very nice and eager give impecible service - without whom we may have never been seated!). Service was horrendous: we had to wait over an hour to get seated (yes, we got there on time). Need I say more. Yes, I do -- the food was no better than a good quality tv dinner. Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there was the Le Cirque of Chef Kuhn, when every morsel I ever ate was beyond superb and the the atmosphere was that of serious diners, not tourists admiring the beauty of the restaurant and ignoring the utter less than mediocre food. If you have a few hundred dollars to spend, do so at a restaurant that breathes creative dishes, not one that holds on to the past for dear life. It's unfortunate that a NYC institution such as my former beloved Le Cirque can take such a turn for the worse. On a more positive note the desserts were excellent and the service is still rather outstanding. I'd like to think I dined there on 3 off nights, but somehow I do not think so. This is the dreams restaraunts are made of. Everything from the service to the decor to the suptuos, mouth watering food will make you feel like you are in Paris itself! Champagne and wine list were tres bien as well as the desserts which are in a class all their own. Highly worth the money and not all that outrageous with price if you value a truely superb dinning experience. Fun (but expensive) date 11/11/2002

I love Le Cirque. Always have. The reason is that the place has class without stuffiness. That's a rare combo. The waitstaff is well trained, the food is excellent, the decor may seem guady to the so-called Ny'ers (the ones who moved here a year ago from 400 miles away but are obsessed with calling LI and NJ people ""tourists"", ""out of towners"" etc.) anyway... Have the Paupite of sea bass it's off the chart. The risotto of the day is always great, and make sure to get your date the chocolate kitchen for dessert. I went for desserts and champagne with a friend, and the choices were absolutely delicious! The creme brulee was the best I have had anywhere in the city, and the orange-scented chocolate fondant was to-die-for! But nothing could beat the wine list--even the champagne choices were abundant! No bang lotso' bucks 8/30/2002

I am embarrassed that people come to New York and go to Le Cirque expecting the best meal of their lives... My dinner was unacceptably prepared and I am normally the content diner, but my Black Angus Steak was so over-cooked it was inedible. The crux of making the experience miserable was not the disappointment in the food, but rather the service being excruciatingly horrible - not one person, except the bus boy who cleared my uneaten steak exclaiming ""you no like you steak (shrug),"" asked how our meal was; therefore, I could not even request a rarer version. I have a feeling that to the average-person (out-of-towner, down-towner) it is a costly and disappointing experience - however, a regular or well know New Yorker would indeed attest that Le Cirque lives up to its critiques - so if you go pretend to be someone or a food critic! Fabulous! 8/22/2002

We try to get to NY for the plays at least once a year. My absolute favorite place to dine is at Le Cirque!. It is expensive, but worth every penny. The service is excellent, and the food is not only wonderful, but exquisitely presented. If you are on a budget, give up a play one night to go here. Ties are required for men, which is funny because there were women in sweats and tennis shoes sitting next to us. Nothing for kids really, however my 11 year old ordered shrimp cocktail and they substituted the spicy cocktail sauce for ketchup - she loved it! more

Whilst nothing about Le Cirque was substandard in any way, I couldn't help leaving with a little sense of disappointment. The service was friendly & informative, the food nicely presented and pleasant, the atmosphere busy but unobtrusive. However, when you are visiting what is supposedly one of the finest restaurants in the city, you expect more than just good. The biggest let down was not the expense (I expected it to be pricey), but witnessing the owner (identity confirmed by the numerous photos & portraits of himself plastered over the walls), mercilessly berating a group of terrified junior waiters on my way to the restrooms. Discipline in the kitchen is fine, but not when delivered in public view - it certainly impressed no-one if that was the intention. more

Good food, not great service 6/13/2002

We enjoyed the food and the ambience. Our waiter was fine. But the people who delivered the food to the table were terrible. They didn't know what anything was. I pointed to something and asked what it was and the guy said, ""Either a potato or fish."" Strange. Pros: Great Ambience more
