Worst

I've actually eaten at La Sirenita a lot for someone who doesn't like it all that much. This is true for 2 reasons: 1) I'm a hopeless cheapskate, 2) I'll eat just about anything....

DON'T EAT HERE 9/15/2010

I ate a burrito here yesterday and got food poisoning - it didn't even have meat in it. Yeah, it's cheap, but believe me, it's not worth puking later. Although I'm pretty angry it happened the silver lining is that I can warn you --- don't eat here!!! You do not want to feel like I have been for the past 24 hrs - in bed all day eating jello and praying you won't puke again. more

Good Cheap Food 8/24/2010

So this is a pretty authentic spot. Mexicans go in it every day and they are also cooking it so you know it's good. (When futbol (aka soccer) is playing you know you're in the right spot.)\r \r Fish tacos are delicious for all you non-meat eaters! And the portions for everything is rather large so you could make 2 meals out of the burritos or whatever if you wanted. \r \r I have some friends that come here almost everyday and they continue to go back. Would recommend it. more

Bargain that feels and tastes authentic 8/16/2010

Feed a family of four for $20-$25 and get great mexican food with larger than usual portions. We have done this with family, friends, and out of towners, and each time the group was happy with the flavors and the portions delivered. Call in your take out order and can stop and go in minutes. It's all good from salads and burritos to chimi's and more, you will find something you like at a very good price. more

Awesome tacos and cheap! 4/19/2009

My husband and I, on our quest for delicious tacos in our neighborhood, went into La Sirenita to check it out. We both got a carne asada and a carnitas taco. Both tacos had a lot of meat and was tasty and cooked well. They are only $1.35 each so our whole order was really cheap. We also got some rice and beans, which were pretty much standard, and an order of chips which were crisp and tasty. They also offer a nice little condiment bar, where we got some smokin hot roasted jalapenos. The food was really good, the atmosphere is casual, so don't expect a superior dining experience, and I even sneaked a peek into the kitchen, which was clean and tidy. My husband and I give it the big thumbs up for yumminess! Pros: Super yummy food Cons: No alcohol more

Best Burrito I've Ever Eaten 8/27/2008

The soft tostada/veggie burrito is only $3, and is easily the best burrito I've ever had. This place is as authentic as it gets. Ive been a solid customer there for three years now, go there about once a week, and have never had a bad experience. La Bonita, its closest competitor and neighbor, is less authentic, more expensive, and bland in comparison. more

The Best Until Today 5/11/2008

This is/was the best local mexican spot in NE Portland until today. I ordered fish tacos and a order of chips with pico de gallo. When I pulled the chips with pico out of the bag they were wrapped in, an insect fell out of the bag and landed on my counter still alive. I have eaten there for years, but unfortunatly will never go back. more

Awesome Mexican! 12/27/2007

I ate at La Sirenita a few months ago upon a friend's recommendation, and abso-frickin-lutely LOVED it! It's a small hole-in-the-wall type of joint, but very close to the true essence of what a genuine taqueria should be. Go to Mexico and you will find many places like La Sirenita that offer similar, equally tasty fare. If you're looking for Latin cuisine that is big on ambience, don't go to La Sirenita - go to Andina's in the Pearl for some Peruvian (and pray that you get good service there). La Sirenita offers a wonderful array of delectable, authentic Mexican foods that will more than satisfy any stomach. \r \r In fact, it is soooo good - it may even offend the palatial ""sensibilities"" of some of Portland's bountiful WASP crowd. And THAT, my friends, is how I know that this taqueria ROCKS! :-) Pros: FLAVOR! more

low grade 6/5/2007

I've actually eaten at La Sirenita a lot for someone who doesn't like it all that much. This is true for 2 reasons: 1) I'm a hopeless cheapskate, 2) I'll eat just about anything. There was a time about 12 years ago when La Sirenita and La Bonita, a block east, where the only 2 eating establishments on Alberta St. Hard to believe now that there's countless trendy joints spread out from end to end of the 30 block area between MLK and 33rd.. It survives based on a tried and true formula of big portions at low cost. You get what you pay for: low grade meat mixed together with other ingredients into a gloppy mess and stuffed into a tortilla with an unhealthy quantity of cheap cheese. It's edible, and by Portland standards for Mexican food, I guess it's not too bad. I'm sure I'll be back ...... cheapest option on Alberta. more

Trust me. 10/30/2006

I've eaten a lot of burritos in Portland, but none compares to this place. I eat there once a week at least. more

Good only if you want fast food mexican 10/20/2006

I am very sad for those who think this is authentic mexican. We went here, expecting more of a restaurant atmosphere - not fast food - mexican rap playing on the TV and dark chicken used in the dishes with ALOT of nuggets in it! How disappointing! The only way I'd go back is after a night of drinking and it may taste more like authentic mexican then! The only pro is that it is extremely cheap. But, ususally, there is a reason why it's cheap! We have given up trying to find any decent mexican food in Portland! more

How can you not love this place! 4/26/2006

We actually go to the newer location in Sellwood on Milwaukie just a block and a half North of Tacoma. This one has been open about a year and is run by the same family. I grew up in northern CA and spent some time in San Diego and I find their food to definitely be above par to many of the places I have been. My husband grew up in Pasco, WA where the taco trucks abound and he is really picky, and we LOVE La Sirenita. Usually when the ambience is good the food is lacking as far as mexican goes. We live closer to The Iron Horse and San Felipe and will always go the extra distance to see them. They know us by name and are always very pleasant. They were very accomomodating of our large soccer group even though they had little room. Pros: MMMMM..., Cheap more

REALLY TASTY FOR CHEAP 5/5/2005

In many ways, this may be the best Mexican food in Portland. Try the Big Burrito (especially the chicken). It's tough to stop eating. Pros: cheap, tasty, fills you up more

The Real Deal 9/1/2004

Authentic, sonora style taqueria. Hands down best tacos in town. If you want the real-deal, this is the place. If you like Taco Bell, you'll be very disappointed. Pros: Authentic, Cheap Cons: Ambience more

NOT RECOMMENDED 8/4/2004

8 months ago you could expect a waiting line out the door. This evening at 6:30pm, there were two people besides me. The place appeared run down, dirty. Tables not cleaned. The woman at the register kept playing with her hair and refused to acknowledge the guy in front of me. One look over the side counter and into the kitchen told me to - run - not walk!!! Cons: , Unfriendly more

Open yer own can of beans 10/12/2003

I wouldn't normally be inspired to spend time writing a negative review, but, given its mediocrity, this place gets way too many good reviews to remain silent. And my review won't even be very specific because this restaurant just doesn't deserve it. Having lived in Texas and California, I can safely tell you that La Sirenita is uninspired and bland. Stay at home and make better burritos yourself. Pros: cheap, doesn't cost much, inexpensive Cons: bland, no flavor, tastes canned more

This place rocks! 5/21/2003

I'm only telling you about this place because I no longer live in Portland, so I don't have to worry about standing in line when everyone finds out about this place! Excellent home-cooked Mexican food, and super cheap. My best friend and I could split the carne asada and both get stuffed for under $10. This place is completely without frills- don't expect any linen table cloths here! Pros: Food, Price Cons: Kinda hard to find more

Muy bueno! 9/4/2002

Real, authentic mexican. Inexpensive and delicious! Forget about Esparza's or Chevy's or Taco Del Mar or any of that other totally fake, Americanized slop. Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious, Authentic more
