Nothing worth remembering. Food average...if that. We went with a party of six. No one was impressed. Try Ciro's, Tepeyec, or Pepe's. Pros: Cute place Cons: over-rated ...

Skip this place. Poorly run, and overpriced for what it is. 6/4/2010

I have been to their sister restaurant in Santa Monica, which is very good, but this place isn't. Was shocked at what a bad experience it was. Save your money. There's lots of other restaurants in L.A. Pros: Our waiter was very nice and on top of things. He seemed to keep the overall atmosphere upbeat, but he was the one shining star. Cons: No parking. Had to valet. Waited in the car as no one in sight. Apparently only one guy on duty. He did come running eventually. Once inside, waited to be seated. No one approached. Then the hostess and the owner suddenly came over at the same time and didn't seem to know who was seating us. We were led into a larger room by the manager and waived to a table with a vague gesture, with us not knowing which table the she meant. No menus. Weird. The lighting is terrible. It was about 8:30 pm on a Friday night but they had it lit up like it was mid-afternoon in Arizona. I have never been to a restaurant in the evening that was that bright. Planning on filming later? Several pieces of art were missing from the walls (screws and nails all over). Were they out for cleaning?! It looked half decorated. The largest light fixture, a chandelier, was caked with dust and cobwebs. Who's in charge of the ambiance?! I ordered a glass of sangria. Terrible. Tasted like kids punch. The sangria at Prado on Larchmont is *much* better. Go there instead. Ordered the beet, greens and goat cheese salad. Not good. Goat cheese was just a garnish, not enough to call it a goat cheese salad. Ordered beef tacos, requested mild spice. Came back extremely bland. Asked when ordering if I could change the corn tortilla shells for flour. ""Sure but I have to charge you extra"". Come on. It's not like I just asked for corn bread or japatis or something. This is a Mexican restaurant, isn't it? The order arrived with corn. My husband ordered a beef dish, medium spice. It came back very hot. He loves spicy food and has tabasco sauce for breakfast, but this was ridiculous for 'medium'. Ordered a dessert to try and get some satisfaction. Another mistake. Bread pudding not good. They need to settle down on the cinnamon usage. Ordered coffees. Tasted fine, but they were so mild we barely felt any caffeine. Wondered if it was switched for decaf somehow. Bill came to $89 plus we added tip, so over $100. Total disappointment. Cons: Food, ambiance, price, parking more

Shrimp in Cilantro Sauce = Culinary Bliss! 1/17/2010

I have been coming here since it first opened. I especially enjoy bringing friends or loved ones here on special occassions. It's impressive all-around; the ambience, the food, the service. I have tried almost everything on the menu, but being the creature of habit I am; I always order the same dish! I absolutely LOVE the Shrimp in Cilantro sauce. The sauce is like a light and creamy cilantro pesto with hints of garlic and onion, the flavors just melt in your mouth! It's out of this world and it is the sauce I highly recommend with any of their seafood selections. You have to try the empanadas for appetizers too! The service has improved tremendously over the last ten years. I personally consider this restaurant a historical landmark in Boyle Heights. It truly takes Mexican Nouvelle Cuisine to a higher level. I'm waiting for that cookbook! If you go to their website, you'll notice that it states one of their restaurants is in Downtown L.A.. It's NOT in downtown L.A., it's in Boyle Heights! Pros: So Many Great Choices Cons: Which Choice Do You Make? more

Breakfast 5/31/2009

Me and my brother went for breakfast last sun> at La Serenata at the pico blvd. Next to the Landmkark theaters. Oh my god we had the most incredible breakfast, and even the pancakes were better than i thought, i didn't expect pancakes this good at a mexiacan restraunt. But i asked the waitress the place was so empty and she said most of our costumers dont no that we offer breakfast. I highly recommend this place for breakfast, and dont forget the margaritas too. Pros: Best breakfast in L.A. more

Finally! We've found what we were looking for... 7/7/2007

If you're looking for quality Mexican, this is it. Rice so soft, it melts in your mouth, beans flavorful not fatty, sauces that are understated yet complex...simply delicious. In a world where restaurant mediocrity comes with a high price, this meal is worth every penny. Pros: Food Cons: ? more

Great Service, Good food! 5/10/2007

We just had a dinner at this restaurant for a party of 20 people. The service was great and the food was really tasty. Prices are reasonable. Order their seafood. They are known for it! The salmon was really good and so was their halibut. The guacamole is a must taste! more

I was there recently and I have to say I was not at all happy with the host or the actual place. First of all the reservation I made a week in advance was not on their reservation book. After looking at their reservation book its not surprising, it looked as if they jot down the reservations on scrap paper to later add or not add to the actual reservation book!!!!!!!!! Needless to say we drove all the way down there for nothing and the area is not the safest place to be in on a Saturday night or any night for that matter. I do not recommend this place at all the staff is rude and totally unaccommodating! Cons: everything more

Definitely not worth the money! 12/18/2005

Ambience was okay, however, the food was NOT good and far from authentic! I ordered a shrimp dish while my husband ordered Asada Tampiquena...Definitely not worth the money...too overpriced!! The shrimp was completely flavorless, no salt, pepper, garlic, lemon...lacking all the basics. The only thing worth ordering is a strawberry marguerita. Pros: Romantic Cons: Expensive, Not authentic more

wonderful. 9/26/2005

La Serenata is just wonderful. This location is especially great (though Santa Monica is lovely as well), because they almost always have mariachi players live (due I'm sure to the fact that they're half a block away from Mariachi Plaza). The food is fantastic, service and ambience are great. A great fancy dinner if you're in the area, and a more authentic scene than the other locations. Try the cilantro fish. It's to die for. All all of their soups are delicious, especially the pureed mushroom. Pros: ambience, valet, delish more

Great authentic Mexican food! 8/9/2005

The food was excellent and the tres leches dessert, its to die for! Pros: Authentic Mexican Foo, Moderately Priced, Cozy settings Cons: Bad Location, Small Restaurant, Service a little slow more

I'd Rather Go To The Santa Monica Location 7/12/2005

As a frequent customer of the Serenata in Santa Monica, I was disappointed in the original location. The fish and sauces were still amazing. We had a fresh sardine empanada that rocked! However, the place feels like a restaurant in generic hotel. The service was so-so. Be warned, they only have a beer and wine license. No tequila! Pros: Seafood, Sauces Cons: No tequila, Ambiance more

As seen on FOOD NETWORK 8/29/2004

Be prepared to be pampered... we went in the late evening about 2 weeks ago. It was fine dining atmosphere.... NO RUSHING so be prepared this is a experience not to be rushed. I didn't like the Sangria but my BF had a delicious chicken that I believe was cooked under a brick. They have a variety of sauces to choose from for the entrees that range from Spicy, Hot to Mild. This is the restaurant the was featured on FOOD NATION with Bobby Flay on the Food Network. Pros: Variety of the Menu Cons: , No Full Bar more

Great food, bad service 2/17/2004

For appetizers, be sure to check out the seafood quesadilla and the filet of tomato salad. It is not a normal salad, it is giant filets of tomato, roasted peppers, with melted cheese on top. But the best part is the raspberry sauce that covers of the plate. For an entree, go with the fish. You pick from any fish in season and any of the numerous ways they can prepare it. But while each dish comes with soup and rice, the portions are all on the smaller side. I'd recommend getting a few appetizers to share. Garibaldi's weakness is the waitstaff. They speak too fast and don't explain dishes. They never feel the need to come to the table. The server also forgot a few of our items for dessert. The restaurant is in a terrible area, be careful. Pros: Delicious appetizers, Fresh fish Cons: , Bad neighborhood more

A Boyle Heights Treasure 11/24/2003

La Serenata is a great restaurant for lunch and dinner. The complaint that I have is that there is no full bar. The best Salsa in Los Angeles next to El Chavo. more

good place for a date 3/1/2003

Service is extremely slow. This is not the place to go if you're in a hurry. Food is great, and I think this place is good for a date. You can sit and chat for a while, which isn't a problem if you are waiting a while for your food. Ambience is good, too. They have an interesting sangria, which is pleasant to look at, but isn't as good to taste. Pros: good food, good atmosphere Cons: slow service more

Good Food, Bad Service 2/13/2003

If you can get past the horrifically bad service and rude waiters, you will LOVE this place. It has food that is based on authentically Mexican flavors by gives them a slightly new twist; a lot like many restaurants in Mexico are doing. Both times we were there, however, the waiters were rude, took forever to take our orders, and really ruined an otherwise wonderful evening. Pros: Authentic flavors, good variety, Affordable Cons: Bad service, Hidden parking, bad neighborhood more

best mexican food 2/1/2003

I just to live in LA, and I was there 2-3 times a week, its delicious. I am from Mexico, and this place is by far the best , its all made fresh and very autentic. I live near Riverside now ,and I still make the drive down there once in a while, when I can't resist the cravings. Buen Provecho! more

tasty, reasonable gourmet mexican 1/16/2003

La Serenata is one of my favorite restaurants. I've turned many friends into new customers on the first visit. SUPER-fresh ingredients. Subtle, yet satisfying flavors. Excellently prepared fish. Charming decor. Very polite staff. Great value. I recommend every seafood dish. The table salsa and chips with the little bit of fresh grated pungent cheese on the top kills me every time. Always a favorite Pros: catering available Cons: no reservations more

Exelente!!! 12/27/2002

Best fresh fish. Outstanding Salmon en Salsa de morcajete. Great service. You will not find this type of service in any american restaurant. Outstanding soups (Musroom soup, carrot soup, and corn soup). Everything is outstanding. This is tasty and real classy mexican food. It will blow you away. I love this place! Don cuco is the best waiter! Pros: different, tasty, impresive Cons: Far from the valley more
