If ever I am biased in a review it would be here. I've been eating at this fine restaurant since I was a baby in 1970. Before I address the food, I'll say a bit about the layout: The atmosphere in some respects is utilitarian but in other respects its perfectly charming. The walls are real wood with a comfortable texture and tastefully decorated (with extras during the holidays). The tables and chairs are comfortable but just that. Now for the good part: the food. As a Phoenix native, I can say that La Pinata is perhaps the best all-around Mexican food establishment. Yes, you can find better single dishes elsewhere. Yes, you can find weaknesses in their menu (chimi and fajitas I'm looking at you). But like a world series baseball team, it's well rounded and pulls through. Want something unique and spectacular: order the chicken or beef machacadia (spelling?). Their tamales are very good. One of my favorite dishes is the machaca dinner with corn tortillas - spicy high notes shine out from the mix of quality beef, thick onion chunks and jalapenos Yum.
