Not exactly a hidden gem 8/3/2010

It’s not your typical tapas restaurant. My friends and I sat in the back room, which really is a social club complete with folding tables, televisions and elderly gentlemen playing dominoes and gossiping. Not romantic or trendy, but fun and laid back. We were instantly charmed. There was a great selection of (bottled) Spanish beer, which, for me at least, was a treat, (I lived in Spain for two years and am a huge fan of Spanish beer). The food, however, was mediocre to poor: the octopus was tough; the calamari greasy; the patatas bravas fried to black bits. And all of it quite pricey. After enjoying the atmosphere and a few beers, I was really disappointed with the meal—before the food arrived, I had been planning on bringing my family here next time they visit NYC. But I’ll be taking them someplace else. Sigh. Good place, though, for an after-work beer. Pros: Fun atmosphere Cons: Poor food; surprisingly expensive more

Fantastic Spanish Food 7/19/2010

Ensconsed on the ground floor of the Spanish Benevolent Society, the restaurant has the feel of a hidden private club. I don't mean fancy, but kind of secret and off the beaten track. Once you walk in, you are in a down to earth restaurant in Spain. There is a front and back dining room. The front is for conversational dining, and the back is for casual dining since it also contains the sports bar and tvs. The food is amazing. The service is outstanding. In the hallway as you enter the restaurant, there is a bulletin board telling you the other services the Society offers - flamenco dancing, Spanish lessons, concerts, cultural programs. La Nacional is a New York treasure. Recommended. Pros: Great tapas, simple and charming ambience, more

Most Authentic Spanish Restaurant in NYC 3/11/2009

If you are searching for a delicious authentic Spanish meal, look no futher. La Nacional's seafood casserole and sangria are amazing as are their classic paella dishes. It is a great place to dine, the inner dining area is very romantic and you feel like you have been transported to Spain. I highly recommend La Nacional to everyone! more

Authentic Spanish food in relaxed atmosphere. 10/4/2006

My husband and I go to this place regularly. He's from Spain and it's definitely the most authentic spanish food he's had here. Very unpretentious place and you can often find Spanish expatriates here which is a good sign. The paella is very good, as are the croquetas. And of course, the sangria is a bonus. Definitely recommended. Pros: Fairly cheap, relaxed, authentic Cons: Not many food options more
