Used to be a Favorite but Going Downhill 10/18/2010

\r This place used to be a favorite of mine. Really nice atmosphere, great wine list (and generous pours I might add), and really nice owner and staff. However the last few times I came here it was going downhill. \r \r My last meal here was a steak, which I ordered medium rare and was dropped in front of me essentially raw. Sent it back and was surprised to get it again and still have it be way too rare. Also wasn't pleased with how the situation was handled by staff including the chef who couldn't cook a piece of meat. I was treated like a nuisance instead of as a customer who clearly didn't receive what he ordered. My girlfriend's food also had taken a turn for the worse.\r \r Have taken a break from this restaurant but plan to return one day. Hopefully some of the recent issues have been addressed. more

Fresh Food and Incredible 10/10/2008

My friend and I had the privlege of eating dinner there on a recent Saturday. Wow! Just incredible! The service was top notch. The decor was lovely and relaxing. The food was TO DIE FOR. I have never had items like that. Fresh, authentic ingredients prepared with great care. Couldn't say one bad thing. Atmosphere was good, wine list is excellent, and the staff is superb. Will definitely come here again! . Pros: fresh food, relaxing ambiance more

Was just here last week and the food was amazing. I had the Hanger steak. The meat was tender, mixed field greens covered in this light and sweet. The deserts are out of this world!! I tried a little of everyone?s main course all well worth the price! \r \r \r \r I love French food and the decor of the place was artsy yet elegant. Decor is a great atmosphere to eat by! The Price is Right 10/4/2007

For more than 25 years, Ernesto Morel has given us a place where the food was reliably excellent, the service attentive without becoming intrusive, the atmosphere both homey and romantic, and Harold's music - yes, you may sing along or even dance - joined to make this not just ""the place to go"" but the place to which to return, time and time again. A bar and sidewalk tables add to the enjoyment, noon or night. Pros: Food, service, ambience, decor Cons: no parking more

Perfect spot for both excellent food and conversation 9/29/2007

I find this restaurant the one which comes to mind when I plan to have a special dinner with a friend or friends.\r Because these dinners almost always include much talk and catching up on our lives, the noise level must be conducive to conversation. La Mediterranee indeed permits comfortable conversation at a civilized voice level, a definite asset. And although there is special background music suited to the restaurant ambiance, it is at a level which neither disturbs nor intrudes.\r The restaurant is quite charming and intimate without being smothering. The small vases of fresh cut flowers on each table, usually roses, along with fresh white napery contribute a pleasant understatement of charm and comfort as well as the promise of good things to come.\r I have always found the wait staff quietly efficient, which is exactly what I prefer, rather than the hovering, overly solicitous ?is everything all right? type of person currently in fashion. And thankfully no member of the staff has ever introduced him/herself on a first name basis.\r I am always newly pleased to find the green salad nicely chilled and beautifully dressed. I also like the fresh butter served with the rolls rather than the latest fad of olive oil for dipping. It?s these consistent little touches that continue to impress me and add to the whole dining experience.\r I recently spoke to a friend of mine who has dined with me at La Mediterranee and we seemed to concur that we were always pleased with our meals, particularly the correct portions of food in your prix fixe menu. But it is really the sum of all the parts, rather than any specific item, which consistently makes dining at the restaurant a pleasure and a special occasion.. \r Pros: Ambiance excellent; noise level allows conversation more

Great midtown Bistro 9/17/2007

A friend told me about La Mediterranee Bistro and I am glad he did. I never write reviews but we had such a pleasant experience there, I decided to share it. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and moderate prices especially relative to the quality of the food. The room is not too big but the tables are very well spaced. Good for a romantic dinner. The service is attentive and friendly. We had the duck and the veal shank. Both were excellent, as was the escargot. There is a full bar and an excellent selection of moderately priced wines. Overall, La Mediterranee has a wonderful ambience about it. You won't be disappointed. Pros: wonderful ambience, friendly attentive service, delicious food Cons: Can' t really think of any more

Best Provencale food in the NE, piano music and French ""oldies but goodies"" in the background 9/1/2007

Found La Mediterranee by chance. The best French dining I have had in years. I started with the frisee salad with poached egg and bacon, beautiful combination of fresh and crispy greens with the warm egg and lardon. Ventured for a main course and the owner's suggestion was right on the money: sirlon with a red wine reduction and a side of tofu, yes tofu, julliened California cabbagge, red and green bell peppers and carrots. The combination was out of this world, sirloin is top quality and the sauce was thick, savory and not sweet at all. At that point, I wanted their souffle for desert, but, chose to order the Calvados ice cream with a waffer. Will be back in NY in a month and will certainly go back to La Med and try more of the delicious plates. The ambiance reminds you of a neighbourhood bistro in Paris, close to the Opera house. When the pianist takes a break, the room gets flooded with great French songs from Mathiew, Montand, La Piaf, Tino Rossi. A treat to your ears and to your stomach, without killing your wallet. Pros: intimate dining on second avenue Cons: wish it was located in Boston more

Best Billibi and Boulabaise in Manhattan. Fantastic mussels. 9/1/2007

La Mediterranee offers an excellent variety of dishes throught the year. This summer, the gazpacho and the tomatillo gazpacho were a must. Not to mention the billibi, vichysoise, the cold lobster dish with seafood, and the classica avocado with seafood salad and the chef's very special russian dressing. The endives blue cheese and walnuts salad is the perfect lunch. The cold poached salmon with the herb mayo sauce... you will lick your fingers. Make sure you get a side order of stuffed chiles and oven roasted tomatoes. A great side for the veal milanese or a roasted duckling. Tthe Long Island duckling with orange sauce is simply heavenly. The mussels are available any time of the day: provencale, mariniere, Thai, and, if you love bacon, the house Flamande recipe cooked with beer. Great starters or light dinners are the grilled calamari with arugula salad and the nicoise with sashimi quality ahi tuna. The crab cakes with a wasabi and mango sauces, light, spicy and refreshing, all in one bite. The Dover Sole meuniere or amnadine, a great dinner choice. Fall, will welcome us with the venison medallions in cranberry sauce, the boulabaise with aglioli, frog legs provencale. A soup lover? The mussel soup, the tomato and dill soup, or the fish soup with rouile. Don't miss the po t a feu with turnips, carrots, potatoes in a savory light broth. Dry sea scallops in vermouth sauce are perfect with an arugula salad with marinated tomato vinagrette. The escargots. available all year round, with a butter, garlic, parsley and pernaud sauce. Saturday and Sunday brunch: steak a cheval, eggs benedict or Scandinavian, or just ask one with Canadian bacon and the other with salmon. If by yourself, try the bar for drinks and a cheese plate or an onion soup or just for a full dinner. Feel free to order a Sidecar or a Golden Cadillac. You will get it!! Ask Ernesto for his wine suggestions to match your courses. Once is simply not enought at La Mediterranee. Pros: Excellent food and ambiance Cons: Parking is hard to find in the neighborhood. Walk or take a taxi. more
