Inexcusable service mars okay-but-a-bit-expensive food. 2/14/2011

Before today, I'd have reviewed this as a somewhat overpriced but good neighborhood spot. Maybe I was slightly skeptical of the customer service... but maybe quality's worth it, eh? No. Never again. Today, I get interested in the to go lunch menu. Never tried it before. Sliders, fries, salad. $11.50. A touch pricey, but heck with it. I order it, plus a couple pastries. She rings me up, hands me the receipt. Kobe sliders 12.50. Not 11.50 like on the sign 12.50. I stand patiently in my spot while the cashier ignores me and fills the next person's order. ""Were you done?"" finally is asked by the customer. ""I had a question."" I say. Cashier asks why. ""Well it says the burger's 11.50 on the menu but you charged me 12.50. ""Because it is 12.50."" Beat. She continues dealing with the next customer. ""My niece forgot to change the sign."" Okay, I think. So you've dealt with this problem before, but haven't gotten around to fixing your sign. We're talking about one sheet of paper printed on inkjet, not some big hard-to-redo sign. ""Well you can just give me back the dollar in quarters if you like."" I say. ""Everyone who comes in and orders knows it's 12.50!"" she whines. ""Well I've never ordered these and I didn't know that."" Cashier yells in back, summons the niece, rattles off a gripe. ""Just give him the dollar!"" the niece says. Cashier returns to register, passive-aggressively tells me to enjoy my dollar. Unfathomable. Don't try to guilt trip me over asking about this! Wait- it gets worse. Then I see a woman staring at me. She carries with her the air of authority. Owner. Since I'm waiting for my order and have the time, I edge in a discreet conversational distance so as not to force the cashier to overhear the customer service critique I'm about to give. In my mind, it's something to the tune of ""You know, from a customer service perspective, when a mistake like this occurs, the customer's complaint shouldn't be brushed off."" I get to ""you know, from a Customer Service prospective-- "" and the owner growls ""YOU'RE LUCKY IT WASN'T ME CUZ I'D BE SCREAMING AT YOU."" I wish I'd asked for my money back. No food is worth being abused by the staff. more

Little Shop of 6/13/2008

I've been to this so call wonderful little bakery, and have sampled some of their ""so-called little gems."" Frankly, they don't resemble or taste like anything that I had in France. To say the least Ralphs has better breads and pastries than this ""so-called wonderfull little gem of a bakery"". Not only are the breads and pastries lousy but the people are arrogant and unfriendly. Pros: Hmmm.......None Cons: Overrated more

Best croissants ever! 4/10/2008

My husband is always in search for the world's best croissant. This is it as far as what's available around LA. I love their chocolate croissant and their ham and cheese. Their olive baguette is one of my favorites! Everyone's always friendly, and it's an awesome little neighborhood gem! Pros: Great pastry and breads! Cons: Lack of space to sit. more

Great Apple Tart - So so chocolate pastries 12/3/2007

If you come here, you need to try the apple tarts. I normally do not like apple pastries but this one was really good. The chocolate stuff is just decent so stick to the tarts and the bread. more

a Croque Monsieur to die for!!!!!!!! 5/29/2007

We discovered this little place after dropping off a dress at the re-weaving shop down the street. Boy, were we in for a treat!!!! We have traveled extensively in France, and their Croque Monsieur was the most amazing thing this side of the Seine! They use brioche bread and it is very flaky...tons of gruyere, and fantastic bechamel sauce. I dream about this sandwich at night! We took a baguette home and it was the closest thing to a baguette from France that we have had in LA. All in all, a very cute place, amazing lunch. Next time we will try their pastries which looked insanely good..... Pros: CROQUE MONSIEUR!! CROQUE MONSIEUR!! CROQUE MONSIEUR!! more

I LOVE this place! 5/10/2007

This is such a great find! One of those places you don't know about unless you live nearby or someone takes you there. It's more of a patisserie than a restaurant, but it is amazing! If you miss real French baguettes & pastries look no further! It's a little mom & pop shop, a bit hard to spot (look for the orange awning on Pico) and small but perfect. My favorite thing to do is get a crusty baguette and do my best to resist the scrumptious fruit tarts while I pay. The quality is the best and the prices are very inexpensive. Pros: everything! Cons: closed on Sunday more

Really Flakey (In the best sense of the word) 3/9/2007

I stumbeled upon this little gem while exploring my new neighborhood. This place is amazing! They just specialize in making top-notch bread, cookies and pastries. Its family owned and run, and you can taste the love in everything they make. Sometimes, it takes them a minute to help you, bu its always worth the wait. My recommendations: Get a house bagguette, a ham & cheese croussant, and finish up with a chocolate chip cookie. Any ONE of these items will get you hooked on this place. SUPPORT LOCALLY OWNED, FAMILY-RUN, SMALL BUSINESSES. IT'S WHAT MAKES AMERICA GREAT! Pros: Consistant great quality, great staff, expanding menu Cons: a little pricey on some items but worth it more
