Best

We moved to the Atlanta area (we are from Puerto Rico) and this is by far the best PR Restaurant we have been since we can remember, even better than ""Criollo"" restaurants in PR...

Worst

Food is OK. Better tasting than in other paces, but very small portions. Prices are terribly high!!! The most hilarious thing we found was that their pique NO PICA, hahahah...

I am very suprised by some of these reviews. First I visit this restaurant at least twice a week and they don't have a waitress. Second waiting for food isn't a bad thing it just means that the food is fresh. Also their service for me has been great and the owner aka the chef is very friendly. I don't get why our kind (puerto ricans) often bash each other instead of supporting each other. I recommend this restaurant to everyone and the mofongo is yummy (its so moist you don't have to add gravy) and the place is very very very clean. One more thing I prefer small and cozy as to big and chaotic. Its a great place! more

In response to Manuel R. (Oct 26th): I don’t understand why a chef can’t be the owner of a small restaurant, but respect your opinion. I have been visiting this place for the last six months (usually on Saturdays) and have never seen a waitress. My husband and I have been served by a waiter.\r \r La Garita is my favorite restaurant. Any other puertorican restaurant in Atlanta can’t be compared to La Garita. Since my first visit when they open their doors in 2010 it became my favorite restaurant… fresh food, the BEST mofongo, VERY clean, nice environment, guitar music on Saturday’s night, DJ, etc. Small and casual restaurant…the waiter is always very nice and respectful. Yo apoyo la calidad y no la cantidad!!!!!!!! I support small puertorican business in GA!!! DO YOU? \r \r Excellent!! Strongly Recommended! \r more

My new favorite restaurant!\r \r Until very recently, I had never had Puerto Rican food...or any Latino food beyond the usual Mexican restaurants around town... and was very convinced that I wouldn't like anything when I went. How wrong I was! \r \r Since my first visit, I've been back three more times, and I can't get enough. Alcapurria, tostones, empanadillas, and pernil - EVERYTHING is delicious! The price versus the quality of food is right on. I have a La Passion while I wait for dinner and chat quietly with my boyfriend, and it is the perfect way to relax at the end of the week! Or even in the middle of the week! more

Terrible!\r Being Puertorican born an raised in Mayaguez we were wanting some authentic Puertorican food so we came here after being told by another person I meet. We went on a Friday evening, the place looked really nice when you come in but a bit small. \r \r We sat down and took them a while before attending us. We finally got to order our food and some of the things we wanted to try they said they had already run out! (on a Friday evening?) by the way we were the only one's there the whole time we stayed. We thought it would be more people. So we finally got around what they did have to serve, I ordered Churrasco with Mogongo, my wife had Carne frita also with Mofongo, we also ordered some Alcapurias for appetizers... looking forward to eat and what a disappointment it was, the Alcapurias where tasteless and over fried almost burnt, so we asked the lady serving us that if we could get them exchanged for one that wasn't burnt and all we got was an attitude, she called the ""chef"" and he was very rude and defensive as if it was our fault the food was over cooked! We were to say the least dumb founded by this, so we decided not to order another one. \r \r The food finally came out after about 20+ waiting, and once again we were disappointed by the quality and amount of food we where given. My Churasco was tasteless and the Mofongo was dry and nut much flavor, the little side salad that came with it was a joke, my wife was the same ways she was very disappointed, and the attitude of the server was horrible, she didn't even come around to asked if we needed anything else, I had to get up and walk up to the bar and ask her for more water where she was sitting watching tv. When we where done, we asked for the manager to voice our opinion and was very surprised to find out that the owner was the ""chef"" at that moment we just decided to just let it be. The food was bad, the service was worst! They acted as if they didn't care or didn't need our business, and they refused to discount the burnt Alcapurias. I DO NOT recommend this place to anyone! I will keep going to MI Pilon instead where the mofongo is ten times better and the food is fresh and cooked perfectly, and the service is outstanding and a fraction of the cost... This people obviously think that they are all that and are very conceded, no wonder the place was empty the whole time we were there. If they keep it up they will be closing the doors soon! more

Truly Outstanding Puerto Rican Cuisine!! 3/19/2012

We moved to the Atlanta area (we are from Puerto Rico) and this is by far the best PR Restaurant we have been since we can remember, even better than ""Criollo"" restaurants in PR.The food is like my Grandma made, homemade and full of flavor. Here you eat truly PR Cuisine.Their Mofongo is the BEST! Not to mention their Arroz con Gandulez and Pernil, alcapurrias, etc. Finally, an Excellent Taste of PR in our backyard!\r And Outstanding Personal Service! No Caribbean Restaurant in the Atlanta area comes even close to this one in quality, taste, authenticity, ambiance, and service. Strongly Recommended!! more

Very disappointed! 12/3/2011

I am new in the state and I was very excited to finally find a Puerto Rican place close by. When I heard they were going to have the Fight, I really thought I finally found my spot. Unfortunately, when I arrived they were charging $10 at the entrance to just step in for the fight. It is not about paying the $10 but come on you were going to get my money on the beers anyways, not to mention earning my business. This is why there are not many Puerto Rican businesses out there. We get greedy and forget what is important. If you are wise in business, using the fight to promote your business was the better idea rather then having a guy looking like a SWAT team at the front door with a bullet proof vest collecting admission fee. Too bad I didn't get the chance to try their food. For what I can see in the comments here, I didn't miss very much on that either. I will definitely continue to look for my spot. I really doubt these people will stay in business for very long. more

Takes too long, a bit on the expensive side 9/23/2011

I was told by a friend of mine to check out this place, then again, I was told by another friend that the food at this place wasn't really so tasty as it should be for a Puerto Rican Restaurant. But, I decided to give it the benefit of the doubt and went for it. First impression was ok as it's not really a Restaurant but a little, cozy place at one of those little plazas in the middle of a neighborhood (next to a Metro PCS or some sort of cell store). Kudos for the decor! The menu variety was pretty good; the prices were through the roof (an arm and a leg for a bit just in case you want to know), the wait was way too long, the portions were very small (I had the carrucho salad, basically conch, and my husband had the the pork chunks with rice), and the food...well...the food was ok but could use a little more sazon y pique. The best part about this place is their cuchifritos (appetizers), but they're extremely expensive for just a small portion. Try for yourself, but do not expect allot of bang for your buck! There are lots of places in the area (typically Dominicans) that have waaay better food (tastier), you don't have to wait nearly as long, will get you double or even triple the portion, and the prices are reasonable (La Garita prices are not competitive at all). Buen provecho! more

Ridiculously expensive!!!! 6/26/2011

Food is OK. Better tasting than in other paces, but very small portions. Prices are terribly high!!! The most hilarious thing we found was that their pique NO PICA, hahahah It was terrible to eat a very tiny alcapurria without real pique... In Puerto Rico we all eat cuchifritos, empanadillas, taquitos, alcapurrias, piononos, and bacalítos with real spicy and very hot pique. What they have isn't even close. ¡¡¡Parece una fonda Neoyorican... No parece un restaurante realmente puertorriqueño!!! more

Puerto Rico in Lawrenceville eat and Dance, Dance, Dance. 4/9/2011

Lawrenceville just got a Piece of true Puerto Rican Pie. Mofongo just like Puerto Rico! I was so impressed I over ate. I had Mofongo and Sea Food on top, shrimp, octopus, onions in a red sauce with a side salad and their signature home made Parcha drink. First of all, I wanted to lick the plate and I am not a big eater. Chef, Willie Mendez, can cook his A-S OFF! Oh wait, I also went to one of their Fight nights and to Karaoke nights and had so much fun, aside from that the quality of the food was consistent. Now don't think you are going to walk in and get old food. All is made to order so please be patient as the food is extremely fresh. The menu was loaded with goodies, but since the specialty was Mofongo, I decided to give it a go and now I am hooked. Did I say the Mofongo had crackling in it? What a treat. Oh wait, the best part. They had DJ Curt from NYC and he was spinning his magic and I danced while I had a steak sandwich. I just went in for a steak sandwich to try something new and ended up dancing for 2 hours with my friends. This DJ was incredible. Found out he played with all the top DJ's in NYC when Madonna was all over the Lower East Side. I want to go to Wednesday night Bingo, but I am afraid I just might never leave and trust me, it feels like CHEERS where everybody knows your name. BTW, cute waiter Willito can be very entertaining. Go hungry, come out Satisfied and full to the max! more
