Genius Hair Colorist 5/17/2012

Yes, she may be a tad eccentric and yes, she may take a while (so clear your day for the visit) but the color is pure genius. I have was dumbstruck that she managed to paint my dark brown hair and make it look completely natural and stunning without an ounce of red or brass... Like I said GENIUS. Laurie also listens to what you say and recreates that vision that you had stuck in your head for weeks. It was well worth the wait and I will never be able to trust my color to another. more

Fantastic Fringe! 2/25/2012

I first went to Laurie for color and I was so impressed by the luminous, subtle results (believe the hype) that I asked her opinion on what I should do with the cut. She suggested a fringe (bangs). I hadn't had a fringe since I was little, but she'd been so good at intuiting what I needed for color that I told her to go ahead. It was transformative! It radically improved how I look and feel about my hair and, most of all, it felt like me -- friends said that it looked like something I'd had forever, the way a new dress that really suits you can seem immediately yours. I've never looked back. I get compliments on my fringe all the time -- from everyone from the hipster girl behind the coffee counter to my chic fashion-world friends. And, like the color Laurie does, it grows out beautifully. I couldn't be happier. I've been to some of the most highly regarded salons in New York and London, and I've never encountered anyone half as meticulous or insightful as Laurie, and no one ever even suggested a fringe. She's the best! more

A True Artist 2/25/2012

I've had my hair colored by Laurie for about 6 or more years now and I wouldn't trust anybody else. I work with some of the best hair people in the business and they are always impressed by the beautiful, natural-looking color and the fact that my long hair has remained in such great condition. Even after all these years, she is still tweaking the formula if she thinks that there is something that she can do to make it better or more appropriate to the time of year. If you want the best color job possible, Laurie is the person that you need to see. more

Don't believe the hype 8/8/2010

My personal experience was one of tolerating Laurie's pretentious attitude at the consult.,giving her latitude for ""artistic genius"" : waiting her required 6-8 more weeks for regrowth( that would be 6+months) having a 10AM Sat. appt knowing I was shooting All night prior - then Laurie changing appt to 9:30 AM : having 3 hours sleep, running to get there - having her Hang Up on Me! Being 10 minutes late, Drama Queen Laurie Lecturing me about how her 'Hands are shaking!"" in her affected voice, then her walking into her place and closing the door in my face! Literally. Thanks for the wake-up-and thanks for saving me $$ with someone on the verge...or did she just overbook and I took the fall? Run from her - there are many professionals out there who are not so self indulgent And great artists. more

I found out about Laurie from Who What Wear and have always been searching for the stylist who knew exactly what I want and need. I have seriously been to the best of the best in NYC and NEVER got what I wanted. For years I tried and failed and now I am so happy to say I have found the most perfect salon in NYC. Laurie is simply a genius. She listens to what you want but also spends a lot of time seriously contemplating every detail down to each strand of your hair. My hair was beyond perfect when Laurie was finished with me. It was very expensive but the best spent money on a perfect salon visit. Run, don't walk!!!! Pros: PERFECT cut and color Cons: None!! The expense is totally worth it. more

The Girl Can't Help IT! 9/10/2009

If you want to look good, and i mean REAL GOOD, go to L'atelier de Laurie. \r \r The Girl Can't Help it! IT'S TRUE! SHE KNOWS HER STUFF!\r \r if you want to have your hair practically chiseled away as a sculptor would, into a breathtaking masterpiece, GO SEE LAURIE.\r \r if you want to be stopped constantly in public by strangers begging you to tell them your secret to your impeccable, heaven sent hair color, GO SEE LAURIE.\r \r hell, if you want a history lesson in French Rennaisance Antiquities, GO SEE LAURIE! (her salon looks like you've walked into a dream, and who doesn't like looking at gilded cherubs and pastoral scenes while witnessing your hair turn into it's own work of art)!!\r \r i've never left looking less than perfect, and Laurie makes sure of that. \r \r A true artist.\r \r \r Pros: having your head be nail-worthy on a wall at the Guggenheim Cons: Zilch more

Submit to the Master 8/11/2009

If you're interested in looking more like Kate Moss than Miss America, Laurie's your gal. \r \r Her work in fashion editorial informs the sophisticated, nuanced styles she creates (cuts and color--it's impossible to say which she does better). I've been going for several years and she's TRANSFORMED me! Go for the consult, have her tell you what she would do--trust me, her eye is never wrong and you will reap huge rewards if you let her do her thing.\r \r Laurie cut my poker-straight dark blonde hair into a long, layered cut with bangs and instantly took 10 years off me. She then meticulously painted on warm, golden highlights (NO FOILS HERE!) to give a natural-looking, subtle color that made the cut even more perfect. The overall effect is ""French babe"" rather than the ""Mall Queen"" result at so many other top salons.\r \r Her prices are in line with other top salons but you never get cheesy rootline with her because of the painting, so I end up going longer between color appointments and still get compliments on my color months afterward. It's kind of magic whatever she does...\r \r Highly recommend this salon...have found the master! Pros: You'll never look better Cons: It's not inexpensive more

best hair in the city! 8/1/2009

Laurie and Chelsey are both amazing! I just had my cut and color done my Chelsey and it was my far the best experience i have had since I moved to the city two years ago! I have gone to other high end salons such a Sally Hershberger but this surpassed all of them. Chelsey took the time to correct my poorly done highlights from another salon and gave me the most amazing color in addition to the correction. The cut she gave was amazing too and the perfect way to kick off a friday night. Laurie was there the whole time hanging out and helping us decide the full look we were trying to achieve with my hair- she is a genius! Both stylists take the time to make sure you leave 100% thrilled with your new look- stop looking for another salon, you have found the best one! Pros: laurie and chelsey!!!! more

Simply the BEST! 7/30/2009

Although I live in Philadelphia, I take a trip to Manhattan every month to visit L'Atelier de Laurie for my color and have been doing so for years…I simply won’t trust my hair in the hands of anyone else! Laurie is a gifted stylist who is incredibly passionate about her craft and has perfected her technique, working with such precision as she meticulously paints on highlights and blends different shades to best compliment your cut. She is truly an artist! Laurie is a complete perfectionist and specially formulates the color to be best suited for your skin tone as well as takes into account the texture and health of your hair as to not compromise the integrity of your tresses. As a blonde, I am extremely happy with the results each and every time I leave her salon…my highlights are never brassy and my hair is incredibly shiny, dimensional and looks & feels healthy! Laurie and her staff are incredibly welcoming, professional and genuine and every visit to L’Atelier de Laurie is always pleasant. I genuinely look forward to my next appointment and would highly recommend this salon! Pros: Amazing Colorist, Perfect Highlights & Great Environment Cons: None! more

Laurie is AMAZING!!! 7/16/2009

Laurie has been styling my hair for about 3 years now and I LOVE her work! I have been to several high end salons in the city with good results, but after going to Laurie I am completely addicted! I can't bring myself to see anyone else!\r After I moved here, I saw her reviews in several fashion/beauty publications like Nylon, Bazaar, and Allure and decided to try her. I love the intimate atmosphere she created. Its not too formal and unlike any other salon I have been to. Now onto my hair...Laurie gives me head-turn inducing, complement recieving hair that is so easy to style! She is very meticulous and detailed when it comes to shaping my hair to complement me. When it comes to hair painting, she makes it look so naturally beautiful with the perfect pieces to frame my face! Best of all, her cuts and color last beautifully! I could tell Laurie is very serious about her work and she pours herself into it! Its the passion and unpretentiousness that makes me love it even more. I mean, I get random complements about my haircut and it feels great! \r The person that left the bad review just doesn't know what she is missing out on. Take it from me, I would get a consultation if i were you. It would even give you an idea of how long the process can be. Sometimes it could take half a day depending on what you are doing. Laurie's work isn't just ""wham, bam, thank you ma'am."" She creates hair that is artfully beautiful! Pros: Best haircuts and color!!! Cons: whatever it may be Laurie is totally worth it! more

attitude problem 6/16/2009

i tried to make an appointment and the receptionist told me that i would have to come in for a consultation at least 2 days beforehand. i was going out of town the nest week and would not have time to do both. i nicely asked if i could do one right before the other and am familiar with their ""painting"" no foils technique-it's they way i usually do it at fredrick fekkai. i was connected to laurie who began yelling at me telling me this was not possible. when i asked if i could schedule a consultation at some point the following week if i knew there would be availability for an actual appointment before i left town, her tone went through the roof as she told me that was an absurd request as she wouldn't know how much time to book whether 2 hrs or 5..please give me a break and try to take yourself a little less seriously. it's high-lights not brain surgery. so pretentious and rude.\r \r i wanted to go to this salon for the small salon-no attitude factor and ended up getting more attitude that any of the high-priced, high-brow salons. Cons: major attitude problem from staff and laurie more

We miss you Laurie! 5/25/2009

Laurie used to cut my husband's and my hair when we lived in San Francisco. Women used to stop him on the street and tell him what a fantastic hair cut he had! She cut my curly hair regularly and it always looked great, even on my graduation day from Cal when I removed my mortarboard after wearing it in the sun for several hours. Laurie moved on to NYC and we moved on to TN and we've never had a decent hair cut/service since. I am playing the lottery regularly--hoping to win--so that we can fly up to NYC to have our hair routinely cut and styled! There's no one out there like her! Laurie, I'm glad you've become famous because you deserve it! Oh, how we miss you and the way we used to look when you were doing our hair!!!! Pros: A true artist more

Best Cut Best Color Just Great! 4/20/2009

I'm from Ohio, but when my daughter moved to New York, I decided my treat would be to get my hair (and hers) done in the city, when I visited. \r \r I saw the NY Mag article about Atelier de Laurie being of the best and decided to try her.\r \r Just because I'm a mom doesn't mean I have to have hair like one! Laurie gives the best haircut, and to hear her describe her technique...she knows what she's talking about. My hair has natural volume, styles easily and looks amazing. I am so happy w her! \r \r My color never looks fake or fades. It always has a great shine.\r \r Well, needless to say, I'm addicted and I'm not going to anyone else! Pros: Best Cut, knows what she is doing! more

Best Highlights in the City 4/20/2009

When I moved to New York, I tried all the major ""hot"" salons in the city, but was never satisfied w my hair color. I wanted fresh and stylish color, and didn't want cheesey stripey highlights.\r \r My Mom read a review in NY Mag citing L'Atelier de Laurie as the best place in the city to get a haircut. I promptly made an appointment (it took a few weeks since she's so crazy busy) and went.\r \r Laurie is incredible. She is truly an artist and does highlights w the precision of a painter working on a masterpiece.\r \r My hair, naturally brown, was dry and had split ends. W Laurie doing my hair, it has grown and looks amazing. My highlights are never fake and cheesey looking. She mixes her own color to get the perfect color, and its less harsh on your hair. It really is an experience. And seeing the famous actresses and models in such a friendly, intimate space is always fun too! Pros: Best highlights and color more

Laurie's the Best! 4/2/2009

One of my girlfriends just moved here and needed to get a really good cut and color to complete her ""city look"". She'd read in a magazine about a few celebrities that love Laurie's hair salon so we looked her up on Citysearch, found her, and set an appt. OMG! When she met me later that evening, she looked fabulous! Laurie Foley totally cut her hair to compliment her face and the color was fantastic. The salon is small but worth a visit.
