The Worst BBQ Experience Ever?Got Sick Afterwards?Very Arrog 4/9/2011

My Dad and I visited Kreuz BBQ in Lockhart, TX in 4/2011. The place was difficult to find/see from the road despite the overbearing, oversize, and quite touristy new building. The first thing I noticed was the lack of people dinning. We ordered our food at 7:40pm after the cashier assured us that they still were serving and that we could stay as long as we would like even after the closing time of 8pm. It was obvious that the butchers of Hispanics with poor comprehension of English and BBQ lingo desperately wanted us to leave so they could clock out. When we asked for brisket from the fat side we were served a large chunk of charred fat trimming with no meat marbled in between. Of course this was refused. We ended up ordering a few pounds of beef ribs and brisket. We then proceeded to the next room where the sides are ordered. The staff there was angry they had to reopen the registers at 7:45pm and would not advise us on what to order on the menu. We did just drive six hours to try this place and wanted to get it right. We were served the only thing they would serve us which was a bucket of cole slaw. We finally sat down at 7:55pm to eat our BBQ. more

not worth the drive 10/10/2010

Saw this place on the food channel and thought we needed to make the long drive from San Antonio to check it out. Yes, it's a big place and the ribs were great, but that is it for me. The brisket was tough and don't understand the sides. They put so much money into the building and they offered terrible sides served out of crock pots. Bill Miller's and Rudy's are hands down 100 times better! more

Good, too much smoke flavor for my tastes 2/4/2009

Get inside, wait in a line up to a mean old lady who takes your meat order. You pay then get to another line for drinks and sides. Get to the table and eat some pretty good BBQ. No sauce here so don't expect that. The pork chop and ribs were good, did not like the sausage much at all. Brisket was good, not great. more

The Stuff Legends Are Made Of 6/21/2007

Lockhart, Texas -- also known as the Barbecue Vatican. This place here is the Taj Mahal of Texas barbecue. So what if they only have three side dishes? It's all about the meat at Kreuz Market. They always bring out your selections on butcher paper and everything is piping hot. Their pork ribs are so large, they have their own zip code. The brisket is very well-smoked and full of flavor. They've got fantastic sausage rings with just the right amount of spices. With all the tradition in Central Texas spanning nearly 110 years, they know what they're doing. You won't want to miss this unique experience whenever you travel here. Imagine: sliced brisket (I order three-quarters of a pound), sliced tomatoes, two slices of bread, and an RC cola. That's the tradition of Lockhart. Pros: Parking (lots of it), Texas' finest smoked meats, The Smell (mmmmm) Cons: They don't take credit cards more

One thumb down 10/29/2006

This joint was a major disappointment for me. Maybe with all the hype I was expecting way too much, but I dont think that was the case. It was just plain and simple average BBQ at best. Pros: Nice place Cons: Average Que more

the most bland BBQ I've ever had 6/22/2006

I'm sure I'll get strung up for saying this, but Kreuz has disappointed me. Of course I had to go after hearing all the raves. The brisket was tender but off-puttingly flabby and just not flavorful enough to stand on its own - smoke was pretty much the only flavor, even extra salt and pepper would have improved the taste. The sausage casing was tough and the links squirt oil everywhere when cut (with my pocket knife!) or bitten. I really prefer a finer-ground sausage than those at Kreuz Market: these are coarse-ground so all the bits of gristle and fat pop out at you. I won't be back - more for y'all that DO love Kreuz! Pros: fun seating, if you order sides they'll let you have a fork Cons: boring meat isn't worth eating, especially at this price more

THE BEST! 10/25/2005

Anybody can easily say that Kreuz's has, and will always have, the best barbecue EVER! Although they are not open on Sunday's you can live it up with their barbecue the rest of the week. They have upheld a reputation for having the greatest barbecue since the day I was born. I remember being four and five years old and waiting in line for 1 - 2 hours on a Saturday, just because everybody wanted to eat there. (Don't worry they don't have those kind of lines anymore). Now that they have their new building, located just outside of downtown Lockhart, you don't have to wait in lines anymore. Service is 3 times as fast as it used to be! This place is great for the whole family! Pros: Inexpensive, Lots of seating, good parking Cons: hot (if in line) more

The sausage is the most unique in the world. My family has eaten Kreuz BBQ for over 90 years. Pros: Great Parking, Reasonable Cost, Unique Atmosphere more

Awesome 6/4/2005

Meat is lean and tender and the sausage is spicy but not too hot. flavor of real Texas BBQ. Place is clean with wonderful environment. more

The Best 8/25/2003

Smitty's and Kreuz hands down have the best bbq on this planet. Anyone who would post anything different must own their own bbq restaraunt, or they only like eating bbq from the frozen section at a grocery store. Try the Prime rib, fatty brisket and pork ribs. more

Texas BBQ at it's best!!!! 7/7/2003

I am from Honolulu, Hawaii and I'd trade all my pineapples I own for some of this damn good Texas que!!! (Joke) As the people in Lockhart knows, good BBQ needs no sauce. Forget the forks, use your hands, man!!! You poor vegans, please stay home and have some tofu!!!! Pros: Smoked Brisket, Jalapeno Links, Smoked Prime Ribs Cons: No Credit Cards, Too far away, Not Open on Sundays! more

The Best 5/22/2003

My family and I would like to say that we think Kreuz market is the best. We have been customers for many years. We have relatives that live in San Marcos, Lockhart and Luling, so when we go to visit we always look forward to eating at Kreuz. Sometimes we go to visit just so that we can dine at Kreuz. Thank you for the many wonderful years of enjoying the food at Kreuz. Pros: Great BBQ, Good Parking, Not to crowded Cons: Smoke more

OVERRATED! 5/6/2003

Kreuz's is easily the most overrated BBQ restaurant in Texas. The meat is over-smoked, leading to a dry flavor. And who ever heard of a BBQ restaurant that doesn't have sauce? A tad expensive for what you get. Virtually no side orders either. If you're going to Lockhart, you're better off going down 183 to the south side of Lockhart and stopping at Chisolm Trail, where the locals go. Pros: Parking Cons: Dollar and cent value, Food more

Lotsa Beef! 2/21/2003

My parents have a photo of me eating a drumstick at the original bldg... I am now 50, and my 3 sons come home to this wonderful barbeque when they are on holiday or military leave! Served on butcher paper, the sausage and brisket both melt in your mouth. I live about an hour away, and the drive is well worth it. Even my Yankee friends can't get enough of this real Texas beef. I sent Good Morning America an email on this, and they featured it on their show. Beats any barbeque! Pros: quality meat, good prices, ample seating Cons: side dishes missing more

Best BBQ in the world 2/10/2003

Not only is Kreuz's not in Austin, but it does beat any BBQ place in the state of Texas, the U.S., and the world. Pros: taste, ample parking, atmosphere Cons: expensive, cash or check only, semi-crowded more

bbq 2/7/2003

This market located in Lockhart is in my opinion is mistaked as the best because of its size. People from all over visit Lockhart for its bbq because it is known as the best. They only go to Kreuz because it is the biggest so they automatically think that it is the best. You need to try Chisholm Trail BBq. It is smaller, cheaper and better. Please try and then re rate the best bbq. more

Sweet meat! 1/8/2003

Some of the best meats in Texas! The sausage is unique and the brisket and prime rib is excellent. I personally think that their sausage is the best ever! Pros: Super food, cold beer, great facility Cons: No sauce, no fork, long drive more

The Rudness is on the House 1/4/2003

I have gone to Kreuz Market for the past 10 years. Some of my friends (now transplanted Houstonians) have been going there even longer. We have been loyal patrons but not anymore! Each of us have experienced rude behavior over the last several visits from their employees and the owner (all separate visits by-the-way). On my last visit several weeks ago, the owner was so rude to me when I took 3 undercooked links back that I will never grace their door again. He complained that he would not be able to recover the money from the links and that I had to order them ""dry."" Here's a question to all the loyal folks that eat there.....since when have we had to order the links ""dry"" to ensure that they are cooked? BOO! No wonder his sister won't even talk to him. more

You haven't had it til' you had it here. 12/28/2002

Out of the choices available on this list, and I've been to every one of them, this is by far the best and definitely worth th ""short"" drive. Pros: quality tasting bbq, ample parking, plenty of seating Cons: distance from austin more
