We saw two large roaches in the place when we were there last week. The bathrooms had a nasty odor, like a truckstop or worse. We won't go back. more

Great little bakery 6/9/2010

What I love best about Kraftsmen is the breakfast tacos. The ingredients they offer are really fresh as well as healthy. So many times, breakfast tacos are greasy or limited in selection, however at Kraftsmen the opposite is true. I love getting the breakfast taco with avocado, brie and spinach. They also offer other great ingredients like arugula, swiss, and roma tomatoes. They make them fresh after you order. The only drawback is that they are a little pricey at $2.85 each. But I understand that fresh ingredients aren't cheap, so it's okay. They would benefit from having a few more umbrellas outside. The nature scene is great, however birds will do what birds do when they are in the tree, so warding off this unpleasantry would be great. I recommend this cafe for breakfast any day of the week. Pros: fresh food, tasty items Cons: a little pricey, need more outside umbrellas more

Croissantwhich! That is all. 3/31/2010

I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with Kraftsmen. I love their location, but I think that the space is poorly designed. I love their sandwiches, but I think that they're a bit overpriced. I love the patio, but the bird droppings everywhere put me off. Nevertheless, I find myself coming back to this place. After several tries, I've figured out that the best thing to order is the club sandwich but substitute the bread for a croissant, Oh-so-delicious. The sandwiches come with your choice of chips that I wish you could forgo as none of them are particularly appealing. The sandwiches are made to order, and you can definitely tell by the freshness and crispness of the bread and veggies. What I would really recommend you do is order your sandwich to go and then go to the zoo, just a couple of blocks down. When you share the sandwich with someone you love while gazing at the majesty of the Lions, you realize that it really doesn't get any better than this. more

Stale Bread and Expensive 2/15/2010

I tried this place twice. The first time was at 4 PM, and they were completely out of bread. People said to try it at lunch time, so I came the second time at 1:30 PM. I was surprised by the high prices, but I figured it would be worth it if the quality was good. I ordered a garden veggie sandwich on Kraftsman sourdough bread. They brought me day old, dry pumpernickel instead (well, I guess that's what it was). The cookie that came with it was okay, but honestly, you can get a cookie that is better at subway! What a disaster this place is. If someone opened a really good bakery in the area, there would be a line out the door in no time. Pros: Location Cons: They call this a bakery? more

Too much mustard! 4/10/2009

The sandwiches we had were ok and might have even been good if they hadn't been drowned in a spicy mustard! We like mustard and it was WAY too much for us. And on top of that the only soda they had was Coke and Diet Coke. Probably will not be back Pros: Nice location Cons: Heavy-handed with mustard; limited soft drinks more

What happened to this place? 2/22/2009

I used to be a regular customer of Kraftsmen, but I won't be going back. I can't believe how much it's gone downhill in the last year or so. The food, which used to be consistently tasty, is now mediocre at best and overpriced for what you're getting. The service used to be quick and courteous; it just took me about 25 min to get 2 sandwiches, with only a handful of other patrons in the restaurant (I now understand why.) The guy behind the counter was more interested in talking with the other employees than working, and had about 6"" of his underwear hanging out above his pants. Not what I'd like to see from someone handling my food. They now make the sandwiches in a back room instead of out on the counter in front of you (what are you hiding??) As the icing on the cake, the chips & sandwich are priced together; they were down to one variety, which I don't like, but they wouldn't sell me the sandwiches without the chips, so I had to pay for something I have no interest in eating. Pros: Pleasant patio area on nice days Cons: Food and service have gone waaay downhill more

Noone compares! 4/17/2008

I frequent Kraftsmen cafe on my way to work in the mornings, they serve locally roasted Katz coffee which is always fresh and complimented wonderfully by any of their scrumptious pastries. I take friends and out of town visitors by the cafe every chance I get! You will love the variety they offer, their friendly service, and the free wi-fi!!! Pros: Flavour, Atmosphere Cons: Parking, but there is a garage behind and they validate parking for customers more

good, but not as good as it used to be 12/5/2006

Kraftsmen croissants used to be very good, and close to real french croissants - now they remind me of Pillsbury crescent rolls. The other bakery items are good, though, as is the quiche. The sandwiches are adequate, if a llittle overpriced. Its a nice little neighborhood local-feeling bakery with a comfortable and shaded outside eating area, so that my 2 young kids like to go. Pros: good bakery items Cons: except that the croissant recipe changed, and they're terrible more

I do not recommend. 9/15/2006

I do not recommend. The place is dirty. Service is unfriendly. Pastries are stale. There are better places for a sandwich and a good cup of coffee. more

fantastic 7/1/2004

I have found Kraftsmen to be one of *the* best spots in Houston. Great for studying, socializing, or some pleasant afternoon reading under the umbrellas outside. The Illy coffee is fantastic as are all the pastries. The almond croissants are a must-have! The sandwich lines can get a tad long during the lunch rush -- but it's worth the wait. The environment is really unbeatable. The decor is trendy (in the best way) and there is plenty of window/bench seating most of the time. The patio, though, is tops. Kraftsmen is just down the way from Black Lab -- and that whole plaza is like a corner of Europe transplanted to the US. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE! Pros: coffee, food, service more

Scrumptious Soups! 7/22/2003

I go to Kraftsmen for the soups--creamy, sophisticated, delicious concoctions that are far from ordinary (only one a day, though, so call before you go!) Of course, they also have fabulous breads and pastries, and the quiche is good just for the flaky crust alone. An undiscovered gem in Montrose! Pros: great food!, friendly staff, trendy atmostphere Cons: small - tiny tables, only one soup a day!, traffic/parking more
