We keep going back for Great Food, Great Service, Great Valu 11/6/2009

In my extended family we have two vegetarians, three people who don't eat pork or shell fish, many omnivores, but all are discerning food lovers... and we ALL love Kingdom of Vegetarians! We have been there many times in large groups (9-13 people), and have always been greeted warmly, have never felt rushed, and have always left full and satisfied. The dishes common to typical Chinese restaurants will pleasantly surprise you with their variety of vegetables (zucchini and asparagus in their lo mein!), and depth of flavor. Kingdom does not skimp. We have several favorite dishes: House Special Wonton Soup, General Tso's Chicken, Franks Delight, Eggplant with Black Bean Sauce (with giant chunks of tofu), Roast Pork Lo Mein, and Cumin Lamb. We just picked up a ton of food last night for my dad's birthday celebration, and once again, it was a hit. We have never had a bad experience. I recommend Kingdom highly. Pros: Yummy food with lots of veggies! Cons: decor/bathroom, but the food makes up for it more

Not Vegetarian 7/22/2009

There was a bone in our food. We have been eating at the Kingdom of Vegetarians for years and we were always so impressed with the food. Last night we got the Mongolian Pork dish for two, and guess what - there was a real pork bone in it. It was horrible! I had a big mouthful mixed with brown rice, and I realized there was something big in my mouth. I pulled it out and OH MY GOD, there was an inch-long bone split in half with the marrow still in it. I think about all of the Vegan Rasta's, Hindus, Hare Krishnas, Muslims and general Vegans that we know who eat there. It is so sad! We loved this restaurant, but this is unacceptable! We called them a freaked out on them on the phone. The manager apologized and seemed a bit shocked! She wanted to send us a new dish ? NO THANKS! She admitted that they buy the dish as a already made food item from Taiwan. How depressing. If this restaurant cannot find another distributor, they will have to close their doors. I don?t see any other option for them. Well, I hope you don?t eat there if you are a vegetarian, because the Kingdom of Vegetarian is apparently not one. Pros: Cool Name Cons: Has meat products in Food more

Dim sum! 6/22/2008

The only thing i've ever ordered is the Dim Sum, and it is always great. This place is perfect if you just want to get together with a few friends, and eat delicious, inexpensive vegan Chinese food. The decor could use a makeover, but after you taste the food, you won't mind. more

I wish we had this place in Charlotte NC 4/30/2008

I was in Philadelphia for some work very recently, and before going I decided to find a great vegetarian place to try. After stumbling on this location online, I was very excited to give it a go. I actually didnt get to eat here til about 2 hrs before I left the city to return to Charlotte, NC but wish I had gotten here sooner. I would have gone everyday! The food was simply amazing. A small place that could be easily missed if you arent looking, but it delightfully surprises once you start ordering! Pros: great prices, non-stop menu, variety for anyone Cons: greasy spring rolls, and it is not in my city! more

Great food, great atmosphere 3/8/2008

I used to live in Philly and went many times to Kingdom of Vegetarians. I thought the food was amazing. I am not a vegetarian but I could eat this food every day. The staff is very nice and remembers their regulars. They have great prices and a wide variety of delicious food to choose from. Always fun to go with a group and either get the dim sum or the buffet style meal. Those allow you to try a lot of different foods and at a great price. Be prepared to take home left-overs as you will get a ton of food. Pros: Great food, great prices, great staff. Cons: nothing more

This kingdom needs revolution 2/18/2008

I was on a short trip and following the rave reviews brought there my fellow colleagues, a couple vegetarians. Apart from very traditional Chinese service- rough, brisk and fast ,""cut and paste"" interior design,- food was also very traditionally Chinese- plentyful, predictable, and , yes- uninspired, like in all those thousands ""golden dragons"",""jade lotuses"",and ""lucky wok""'s out there.I mean, well ,it was edible but nothing to rave about. Pros: so very cheap Cons: cheap in all the other ways more

Great Vegetarian at a great value! 6/26/2007

If you looking for great veggie food and great service this is the place. We were just there last weekend June 23, 2007 for lunch. We decided on the Dim Sum buffet. The owner made all the selections for us and we were nothing but surprised and happy about how wonderful the food was. The price was $10/each and I have to tell you, I felt guilty about paying only $20 for such a great meal. I live in NY and this was better than I've had in Chinatown. Pros: Great food, great value and service. more

Best Chinese food in Philadelphia 6/4/2007

This is the best Chinese food period in the city. I have always brought non-vegetarians to the restaurant and they all asked to come back. There is all you can eat dim sum for $10/person. I recommend bringing more than two people because the servings are huge. Pros: delicious food more

Great service and food 8/9/2006

This is the best vegetarian place. I have never eaten anything like it. There is a lot of unique food there. I like the Walnut Jumbo Imitiation Shrimp and Sesame Chicken. The service is great. Pros: Good food great service more

GReat Fo0d!! 8/9/2006

omg!! this place's food is soo freaking good!! i mean the shrimp are practically the same as the real ones!!! i fell in love the shrimps n the general t'sao chicken!! this place is like heaven for the teenage vegetarians!! Pros: vegan Cons: nothing more

Weird General Tso's 7/18/2006

I tried this general tso's, and it was weird. The sauce was all brown and not orangish, like I'm used to, and it wasn't spicy. It smelled more like soy than anything. The chicken was deep fried like you'd get with sweet and sour chicken, some was really breaded in about a centimeter of breading. Pros: All vegetarian Cons: General Yucks! more

delicious! 10/6/2005

I often find that myself disappointed by vegan restaurants, though they have good ratings (I sometimes think vegans are just so thrilled to have a place to eat that they're not particular the food be good!). This place restored my faith in food! I have been there twice--once with two omnivores--and have always been delighted. Of the five or six dishes I've tried, I remember thinking one was just okay (don't remember which dish) but everything else was wonderful! The two omnivores loved the food, and one of them said it was the best Chinese food they've ever had in America (the other one said it was the third best). Service is good, waiters are polite and friendly, and don't try to rush you. The ambiance isn't fancy, but has charm. I beleive it was rated one of the top healthy eating spots in Philly recently as well. Pros: food, cost, service Cons: none! more

Just give it a try and you will love it!! 7/29/2005

I was introduced to the Kingdom years ago and I was immediatly addicted. I'll be honest that I was never a big fan of Vegan cooking. But after one visit to the Kingdom...my outlook changed! I live in Colorado now but everytime I come back to Philadelphia I go to the Kingdom. The food is the BEST I've ever tasted. My favorite dish is the Walnut Shrimp. The wonton soup is to die for. The place is very laid back and the service is wonderful. Everyone that works there is extremely polite and helpful. I HIGHLY recommend the Kingdom to everyone! Especially those who are afraid of Vegan cooking. Pros: Not too expensive, Laid back atmosphere, Great food more

KOV rocks 1/1/2005

Hands down, the best Chinese vegetarian food (and possibly best Americanized-Chinese food, vege or not) in the city. The mock chicken dishes are my faves, especially that spicy General Tso's chicken. Try the lychee duck or one of the fish dishes. They're very creative. The staff are friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. It's not 100% authentic Chinese, but so delicious you won't care. Pros: amazing food, good prices, unique & interesting more

Fun and Fabulous 8/15/2004

Whether you are a strict vegetarian or just an adventurous diner, this is a great place. Fresh tasting Asian foods low on grease and high on flavor. I love going here with a group of friends and doing the All-You-Can-Eat-Dim-Sum. At $10 a person, it's a major bargain, and you will definitely not go home hungry! Spring rolls, sesame noodles, multiple kinds of dumplings, scallion pancakes, mock-pork buns, friend bananas...it's all good and you can feel good about what you're eating, too. It's maybe not the most impressive-looking place, but the food is the reason to come here, not the atmosphere. Pros: vegetarian, inexpensive, fun more

Good Vegetarian 8/5/2004

The food was great the service was odd. It was 2 kids serving. It is a BYO and the friendly 14 year-old waiter gave us a corkscrew. The food came out all at once but the food and the quirkiness was fun. I'll defiantly be back! Pros: cheap, good food, fun more

A Vegan paradise in Philly! 9/15/2002

OK,... to put it simply,...THIS PLACE ROCKS!! There are several Veggie only Chinese places in Philadelphia's Chinatown, but none compare to The Kingdom of Vegetarians. For those with short attention spans like me, I will ""bullet"" the reasons why it rocks 1.) The food is awesome and all Vegan 2.) The prices are cheap 3.) Lunch specials 7 days a week 4.) Friendly service 5.) you NEVER go away hungry. The portions are gigantic 6.) two words,... Sesame 'Chicken' 7.) Because I said so! If I wasn't the poor Elementary School teacher that I am, I would eat here everyday. Pros: cheap, tasty, HUGE portions Cons: decor needs work more
