Bad service, average food 7/24/2007

I took 2 of my our of town friends there because of the location and atmosphere...what a MISTAKE!!! The service was terrible, they forgot my dinner and did nothing about it and it took 2.5 hours for 3 of us to eat. I will never, ever, ever go back to this place. Plus, they serve their sushi almost warm, its disgusting! Pros: It downtown Cons: Bad food, bad service all around, always too busy more

GREAT FOOD AND STAFF 7/18/2007

I've heard alot about kenichi trough friends but never had a chance to actually try it. I was kind of skeptical after reading certain reviews .But let me tell you it was a great experience ,we sat at the sushi bar where we were treated like superstars. I asked the chef to make us something off the the menu as i was told to do, and one of the dishes that sticks out in my mind was a tuna sashimi with a granny smith apple relish and a truffle garlic soy it was to die for .What made my experience even better was the wait staff it seems like everybody wants to know how you'r doing and cheking up on you best service i've had in a long time.defenetly coming back great people with a good attitude. Pros: beautiful ladies and great food more

Fantastic as usual. 6/8/2007

Absolutely the best sushi and scene in the downtown area. We've been twice in the last two weeks, and have always been treated superbly at the door, at the table, and by the chefs. My boyfriend and I constantly recommend Kenichi to all our friends. Try the sashimi specials, and order a steak with chili butter...mmm... Top Knotch 5/24/2007

I walked in and the first thing I noticed was how packed it was! Right when I thought there was no way I was gonna get a table here, a manager greeted me and told me there was a small wait but that he would buy me and my friend sake for having to wait. I thought this was an awsome start to a great night. My waiter was awsome too. The waiter impressed us so much that we just let him bring the best food and drink out and everything was a homerun. The manager greeted us again on the way out, gave us a free appetizer coupon and signed us up for dinner next week. I can't wait! This is some of the best service I've had in Austin yet. Pros: food, drink and service more

not impressed 3/29/2007

i went to Kenichi last night with 4 other people. We had all heard only good things about it, so when Uchi had an 1.5 hour wait at 7pm on Wednesday we decided to try Kenichi. We were disappointed. I just moved to Austin from the gulf coast of Florida and I haven't been very impressed with the sushi selection in austin. Very boring rolls that are usually very overpriced. Uchi is the best in austin and i would only rate it slightly above average in the grand scheme of sushi. But again Florida has amazing sushi, so maybe its not fair to compare the two cities. Anyway Kenichi review: the drinks we ordered were not very good - I had this key lime martini that was very sour and pretty awful, a few other people had some martinis that were not made very well to say the least. I ordered the Aleucian island roll which was ok, but very small for its $13 price tag only about 4 pieces and the bonzai roll was ok, but again small only 4 pieces. The rolls available are not very creative and most are cooked. I want sushi - not smoked salmon rolls or tempura - which dominate the menu. My friends ordered the seared scallops. When the dish came out the scallops looked delicious, seared and golden brown, but after one bite she almost choked on it, i kid you not. It was completely raw on the inside - i mean cold and slimy. Now if she had wanted raw food she would have ordered sushi, not cooked food. The menu does not say that the seared scallops are served like seared tuna which is essentially raw. She asked the waiter to have it fully cooked. He apologized and when he returned, the dish was only SLIGHTLY cooked. It was still raw in the center. She was not happy and wouldn't eat it. I don't recommend kenichi at all. Cons: yuck! more

Questionable 3/25/2007

I'm a big believer in restaurants that serve great food with minimal fanfare. This seems to be the opposite of what the proprietors of Kenichi had in mind. This sushi restaurant is located in the warehouse district of Austin, and features a dimly lit room, loud music and bartenders with attitudes. I mean, I like bringing together flavors from different cultures, but this whole ""Asian-Fusion"" category must stop. I mean, what year do they think this is--1999?\r \r Any sushi restaurant that, when asked what their best fish is for the night, mentions their California Roll and what they deem their ""Volcano Roll"" which is a mayonnaise covered mess, should be shut down and never allowed to operate in the industry ever again. But, shame on me for not just walking out. more

Sushi is like grocery store sushi 3/24/2007

The decor is stylish and hip. The sake mojitos were good & we had a great waitress. However, the food is mediocre at best. MY guess is that the sushi ""chefs"" have little training - they spend more time joking with each other than preparing beautiful food. The sushi is plain and bland - little decoration, interesting sauces, or flavor. At over $100 for 2, I expected much much better. For rubbery bland sushi like this - shop the grocery aisle. Pros: stylish decor, drinks Cons: the sushi more

Don't bother 2/16/2007

The decor is the only good part. The food is ok at best and highly overpriced. The servers are unfriendly and extremely slow. It's impossible to get anything from the server (it's also always someone different everytime something is delivered) especially a drink. In the three times I've been there my food was never checked on by a server and I ALWAYS had to flag someone down to get a drink. It is obvious everyone working there thinks they are better than everyone - I suppose it's because Kenichi is supposed to the the ""in spot""...I don't know why. I'm from Chicago and I've been to the best of the best restaurants and I've never been shunned by restaurant staff like at Kenichi. I think because there are not a ton of restaurants here that are upsale/swanky in Austin, people feel they need to make Kenichi the ""in spot"". I just don't understand...the bar is even quite small. Why do so many people want to go here? Just to see and be seen? No thanks. I will never return - I gave it three trys and got the same awful service and overpriced so-so food.\r \r TOMO SUSHI IS THE BEST!! Pros: it's sheek decor and people watching Cons: food and service - and it's super loud in there more

Posers Abound-Waiters with Hiar Extensions! 2/1/2007

When you feel the need to be seen by posers, go to Kenichi.\r DO NOT COME FOR THE FOOD. Save your money for authenic asian cuisine somewhere else.\r Austin continues to thrive on wait staff that are needy and crave your attention.\r The sushi is not good, they are using less than fresh product based on my visit. Come to Kenichi after bowling to look for women!! 9/7/2006

Recently dropped by after bowling at dart bowl to look for some women! This is a great place and the women love bowlers. A professional bowler is treated like a movie star. I ate a whole tuna her and loved it. A cute blonde asked for some of my Tuna and I had to run her off! Can you imagine? She knew that I was a rich and powerful bowler and wanted some of my action, but even though I am good looking, rich and tall and compete with star bowlers MY BODY IS A TEMPLE!! I do not share it with strangers!! Pros: Good women Cons: the women beg for food! more

Overrated-Not for the experienced sushi lover 8/23/2006

Kenichi is overpriced, and overrated. The service is horrible. The wait staff treat the patrons as if you should be lucky enough to sit in their section. They are unattentive, not very personable and the upsale techniques are transparent. For those who actually enjoy sushi as a delicious meal, and not just something "to talk about" the quality is poor and pales in comparison to some of the more traditional establishments in town. more
