Big Disappointment 2/27/2011

Maybe it was the fact that it was Sunday Brunch. Or maybe this is just not a good restaurant anymore. I had Sunday Brunch at Kellari's with 10 people and not one of the people in the group was happy with the food. It took forever to get the food - this while there were only two or three other tables with diners. Once we received the food no one got food that was warmer than room temperature. There was barely any actual Greek food on the menu. I ordered Greek Toast and it turned out to be french toast and nothing more. I will never come back to this place even though maybe the food is more Greek at dinner. I couldn't care less. If you don't want to be bothered with brunch then don't open your restaurant. Yuck! more

Terrific Greek Cuisine 3/7/2010

We had a wonderful Valentine's dinner there. The seafood, while a bit expensive, was wonderful. Octopus, squid and whole fish were delicious. Our server was very nice but she should not have been working in this place, yet. Still too green. She had help from the wine captain and the floor manager so it was not a disaster but just a bit too many times craning my head to see where xxx was (water, wine, food, dessert menu, etc.) We will return. Highly recommend a coupon at restaurantdotcom. We saved $50 off the bill with wine! Pros: Flavors and quality Cons: Service a bit lacking more

Very nice restaurant 5/15/2009

I had never dined at Kellari and decided to try. We were a party of 8 with reservations for 6pm. Arrived early and had cocktails at the bar. The bar offers a selection of Greek olives, crackers, dips and cheeses to munch on while enjoying a cocktail of your choice. The Sangria (Red or White) is excellent. Dinner was nice - very traditional Greek menu which means alot of fish. This is definately not the place for a non-seafood eater. There is 1 chicken dish, 1 steak dish and 1 lamb dish offered. A few of us commented that the entrees seemd below par in comparison to the appetizers offered. The salmon entree, while very fresh and delicious could have been warmer upon presentation and an Ozo and seafood dish had clams that were not cleaned properly so you had "grit" and there were "broken clam" shells in the pasta. Fortunately I had my glasses on so I could pick out the bits of shell. Should we have told the server; probably. But everything else was fine. Personally I would not return here for dinner only due to the lack of "non-seafood" offerings. However I definately would like to return for cocktails and appetizers at the bar with friends. Pros: Fresh seafood, excellent service and great Sangria! Cons: Not enough selections for non-seafood eaters more

Robbed of my money 5/9/2009

I am being slight dramatic its true - I've frequented this for lunch as the $25 pre fix is pretty good value and tasty for a slightly fancier midtown place. The dinner situation is pleasant but the pricing got waaay out of control. I think the vino was by the glass at north of $13 perhaps (rather steep) and where we really got hosed was the fish - the best fish in greece we were told and if you buy it, it serves two - its $35 a lb or so, waiter confirmed we'd get a pound or thereabouts. Bill comes and the fish was $78!! without tax or tip - it was nice I suppose but for that money you should be getting a plate full of fecking kobe fillet with gold leaf bernaise I reckon as opposed to a lightly grilled piece of greek haddock with chips (okay, quite nice lemon roasted juliened potatoes - $180 total for this meal where we shared the main course was ridiculous - I'll be back but only for lunch and only b/c I was on expenses. Overall the servers were a bit bewildered. I was waiting for someone to join me for about 10 mins and 2 different people tried to steal my soon to arrive dining partners place setting - one of them tried twice despite my protests! A sequence of may 10 people in total attended to us which seemed very inefficient and didn't really make one feel like one was receiving "good" service - rather served to discombobulate the whole thing..... Pros: Decor, taramasalata, nice steeze.. Cons: Hornswaggling larcenous waiter more

Good everything 12/11/2008

Kellari has delicious and fresh seafood. The restaurant itself is beautiful and conveniently located near Grand Central Station. I can't think of a bad thing to say about Kellari. I'd definitely go back. Pros: Food, Ambiance more

Poor is an understatement..... 11/10/2008

A waiter took my order and disappeared. After 20 minutes I called over another person who when I asked where was my waiter they promptly brought me a dessert menu. That was just the beginning but the bottom line is the food is not worth the price. If you are not a New Yorker you will probably think it is wonderful due to the decor and better than average menu. But as a New Yorker I can tell you that there is better in this city and at half the price. After an ok meal, I once again asked where my waiter went; I never did get an answer. You want good greek food go to Astoria. Pros: Decor, location Cons: Prices, service more

Very good 10/30/2008

Went here with a group of people for lunch. Had the prix-fixe. Good bargain, compared to other nyc restaurants. Everything was very fresh (fish was excellent). Baklava was very good. Satisfying and fulfilling meal. Will go back. more

Everything was good.. 10/14/2008

If you want good seafood and great drinks this is your place. I eat fish daily and have trouble finding good places in NY. It gives you a romantic dinning. I loved the Sea Bass. Excelent drinks!!! Good service. I can't wait to go back more

Beautiful restaurant 9/26/2008

As we stepped in the door, a large Greek man sitting at the bar welcomed us in. We must have looked out of place, he said 'Come on in, have a drink!'. This place was gorgeous- beautiful colors, dramatic draperies and fabrics, warm lighting, minimal but modern decor. The service was a little slow, but friendly. The wine list was interesting- a lot of wines I didn't recognize. I don't even remember what I ordered, but my glass was only $8. Not too bad. I'm not sure if I would go back, the menu wasn't easy to understand or recognize. We could have used a little assistance more

Very poor value 5/26/2008

We've been here a couple of times now and won't be back. First time it was costly but food was ok, last time food was mediocre and therefore way overpriced. Service is friendly but slow and extremely uninformed. No reason to go here. more

A great surprise for a real foodie. 5/22/2008

It was close to the theatre, sounded good. Was overwhelmed by the food! The pre-theatre menu is such a phenomenal deal. The surprise was the extraordinary food. The grilled calamari, the grilled sardines...over the top. And a whole fish was just unbelievable. On the two recent occasions I ate there, the servers were just so helpful, with a lot of extra attention. All the staff was just wonderful. I plan to eat there many times. Pros: Service, high quality food. Cons: None more

Extraordinary Experience 5/19/2008

Authentically magnificent! The food is extraordinary! The Lavraki (fish) is out of this world! Melts like butter in your mouth. Pros: Live Music, Fresh Food, Great Service Cons: Parking on Streets more

Go Here Now! 4/20/2008

By far one of my favorite places to eat in the city. I've been coming here about once a week since I first found out about this place a few months back. Everything me and my friends have ever ordered has exceeded our expectations from appetizers, entrees, and desserts, to the wine list. The staff is very friendly and attentive, but not at all bothersome. The atmosphere and decor are wonderful. While I do not enjoy seafood, all of my friends have told me they have the best seafood in the city. There is absolutely no reason not to go here. I've recently expanded my horizons to their sister restaurant , Kellari's Parea, which is equally as good, smaller, more intimate, and a bit more casual. Pros: Everything Cons: Nothing more

Great food and service! 3/25/2008

KT was quite an experience. Had my mother's 70th birthday dinner there and she as well as the other guest were quite impressed. The appetizers were amazing as well as the snapper (most guest had). The lamb riblets were most succulent as it fell right off the bone. Everyone raved over the eggplant and zucchini chips. The host and wait staff were very attentive and not over bearing. Not too loud, that you couldn't hear your dinner mates. (We were at the huge table in the back - which was gorgeous, by the way - that could accomodate about 15 ppl). I would very much recommend as place to carry a date, or have a larger function (10+ ppl) Loved it! Had a wonderful time!! Will go again! Pros: Ambience, polite and patient staff, food, value more

Friendliest Service in NY 1/27/2008

My friend I visited Kellari in November 2007 on our last day in New York. In fact it was our last supper there. We experienced the most friendliest service and recpetion than anywhere esle in NY. Safien the bar manager was a star. As we left I mentioned that there was one saying which I thought you should get printed and put up behind the bar. "Years, Lover and Glasses of wine are things that should never be counted." Safien promised to have it and placed behind the bar. Go and see if he has kept his word. more

Very nice place! 1/27/2008

I went there last night with a good friend from college and we got a bunch of appetizers instead of entrees. The veggie "chips" were great (most things fried are), the meatballs were savory and better than I expected, the rice and spinach mostly made of spinach and tasty, and the Greek salad a delicious bowl of tomato chunks, feta, and spices. I was not so impressed with the Kellari oregano French fries, nothing special. We got a bottle of Greek Cabernet Sauvignon that was very enjoyable. With the wine and tip the bill was a little over $60 each, not too extravagant for an occasional splurge. I'd like to go there again sometime soon! Pros: good food, nice atmosphere Cons: somewhat inconvenient location more

outstanding fish 1/11/2008

There's nothing bad I can say about this place. I only wish it was cheaper so I could go once a week (though I did over the holidays). The food I fantastic, the waitstaff knowledgable and charming. They have the best oysters in the city (forget what you hear about Marlowe & sons). The wine selection is fantastic. Pros: fish, service Cons: price more
