After taking my son to two other speech offices, I found Kara Dodds and Associates, Inc. I was looking for a place that was knowledgeable about apraxia speech. My son received private speech for 4 months prior to switching to KDA and had made little progress. Once he was at KDA, he started progressing right away and has come a long way. The therapists at KDA are very knowledgeable, professional, enthusiastic, and great with kids. I have always been impressed with the detailed notes they keep from each session. They go over these notes with me during the last 5 minutes of the session. This is a chance for me to hear about his progress, things he is still working on, and goals, so that I can implement them at home as well. My son loves his therapists and is always excited to see them. The progress that my son has made with his therapists in the past year has been amazing. We have had a few occasions when he saw a few different therapists in the office (during makeup sessions), and they have also always been professional, encouraging, and good with him. My youngest son just started receiving speech therapy a month ago with a therapist new to the office, and she has impressed me right away. I think the whole staff there is amazing.\r The office staff has also been very helpful in dealing with insurance. They have handled everything that has come up, and even dealt with some issues that came up during the Triwest/United Healthcare switch over. I have never had to be involved with the insurance side of things. The office staff has always made the calls and looked into things, getting them resolved quickly. One son is seen 3 times a week and my other son is seen twice a week, and the office has always been able to work with our insurance and get approval for the frequent therapy sessions. The other speech offices we went to, I had to make calls myself on occasion to get things resolved. \r KDA is also great at scheduling makeup appointments in the event that we can’t make a session. They have been flexible with times and willing to work with us to make it possible for my older and younger son to be seen at the same time with different therapists so that I don’t have to drive back to the office more than needed. We have been very pleased with our overall experience at Kara Dodds, and Associates, Inc and look forward to continuing to work with them. I have recommended them to my friends that are seeking speech services for their children, and I would recommend them to anyone else more

Please do not use services at Kara Dodds and Associates if you struggle financially. \r \r Even if your insurance tells you that the service is covered, AND Kara Dodds also states that they have cleared it with the insurance company, your claims may still all be denied, just as ours were.\r \r I saw a review saying this by another parent before taking my son to Kara Dodds, and at the time I just assumed they didn't understand their insurance coverage well. And then, five months after beginning weekly services with Kara Dodds, they finally told me that all of my claims had been denied. They should have informed me at the time of the first denial so that I could have made an informed choice about continuing services at full price. But they did not. I am a single mother who works full time and I struggle monthly to pay for our basic needs. Now I have another huge bill to contend with from Kara Dodds. \r \r The finance staff at Kara Dodds stated that as long as I could pay something each month, I could pay them back as I was able. I made a couple of payments and then received a statement that said that they are now going to charge me interest on the overdue amount.\r \r Other aspects of their customer service really need work. I asked for my son's evaluation four or five times before I finally received it. They had emailed it to the wrong email address. So some stranger now has been emailed a copy of my son's file! I am livid about that. more

Thrilled mom of a son who is now talking! 2/5/2012

My son is thriving at this office. I went to another office for 3 months with limited progress. I switched to this office 6 weeks ago from a recommendation from his preschool teacher. Its night and day now with his progress. He is now talking! The office staff is so nice, Kara is fantastic and my son loves going. I drive 45 minutes to this office each week and it is well worth the drive. They bill my insurance directly and its so easy. I'd recommend this office to any other parent. more

A Wonderful Practice 1/27/2012

Kara Dodds and Associates is a wonderful practice. Our son has been treated by KDA for over four years. The treatment has been top notch. My son is unable to speak and uses a speech generating device to communicate. Despite this, Kara's expectations for him are indistinguishable from those she would have for children who ARE able to speak. Instead of trying to change him and his learning method, she adjusts her treatment techniques. They are always finding ways to challenge him, taking him to the next level of cognitive comprehension and communicative ability.\r \r KDA has been very patient with us financially. For the first year or so, our insurance company would always find a way NOT to pay. I can’t tell you how many times Cassandra and I have been on the phone trying to figure out how to work with insurance. At its worse, KDA carried a balance for us for over eight months. After this nightmare we decided it’s best to file claims with insurance ourselves rather than through KDA. We took over filing claims with insurance until mid-2011. KDA kindly took back billing insurance and even worked with us to straighten out financial matters. \r \r One reviewer alluded to the fact that all KDA cares about is money. This hasn’t been our experience. Kara volunteers numerous hours to help diagnose children at risk for autism, raises money for autism-related causes and speaks at universities worldwide about treating children on the spectrum. Kara genuinely cares for these children. My son’s renown pediatric neurologist only recommended two practices to us, saying these two are the best. One was Kara Dodds and Associates. As parents of a special needs child, we are always second guessing every decision…except for our choice of KDA.\r more

Best Speech Therapy Clinic 2/6/2011

Hello, \r \r My child has been going to this clinic for over a year. He has been doing so good and I have never been happier with how his therapy is going. The staff is amazing as well and they get high marks for explaining insurance and billing so well. Grace is wonderful when checking in and making appointments and Cassandra handles all of my questions and billing inquiries as well. There are so many questions involved with insurance and I make it a point to know that it is my responsibility to know my insurance and what is covered or not. It is not their insurance, it is mine. They bill the insurance company and it may or may not get paid. I have not had this happen there at Kara Dodds, but have had many mistakes at Children's when it comes to billing. \r \r It is funny how people always seem to complain on these posting boards and that is what gets them to write something. If you ever get to the point of getting a letter from an attorney, you can't be very intelligent as it was probably not the first bill you had gotten. I get my bills twice a month as they bill 2 times a month. If I ever have questions I call and always get them answered. Or I call my insurance if they do not pay or I have an issue. \r \r The most important thing is not my checkbook, but my childs learning and care. \r \r This was supposed to be about how I felt about Kara Dodds and Associates, but sorry I just had to respond to the crazy post about someone who didn't pay their bill and is now complaining about how it is the clinics fault not their's. Take some responsibility.\r \r more

Bad News 1/29/2011

We took our son who is Autistic to Kara Dodds for speech therapy for over a year. The actual speech therapist were very nice and worked with him great. The 1 star is for the actual therapist who were very sweet and dealt with my son accordingly. For the first 6 months the Regional Center paid for the therapy and then we were informed that they would no longer cover the funding. I spoke with Cassandra who stated that my insurance (Bluecross/Blueshield) would cover the entire funding. When I attempted to make a co-payment I was told not to worry about it. This is were we take an unexpected turn into Crazyland!!! Well 6 months later we get a bill in the mail from Kara Dodds for over $1,500 that stated the bill needed to be paid in full within 30 days. I was shocked and when I spoke with Cassandra she told me that she had emailed me previous bills (a lie) and left voice messages on my home phone (another lie). When I told Cassandra that I didn't even have a home phone just a cell she said "" well I know the number belonged to you because your were talking on the voice-mail."" Complete lie #2 as I didn't even have a voice message on my cell. When I questioned Cassandra about my insurance she stated that they had denied paying for services rendered. I then contacted my insurance and they told me they had received an initial request for payment 6 months prior but when they requested documentation from Kara Dodds they never received or heard from Kara Dodds again. After the 30 days mentioned in the bill I received a certified letter from an attorney in Arizona stating if the bill was not paid in full I was going to be taken to small claims court. NIGHTMARE as we struggle to make due since I am the sole provider and my wife stays home to take care of my boy. When I mentioned this to the attorney and explained to him that we had never been informed my insurance was not covering the services he just stated the Kara Dodds was a small business and also needed to get paid. After going back and forth with Kara Dodds and my insurance I ended up having to fax and mail my insurance provider the required documents (that Kara Dodds never did) and they paid their portion of the bill soon after. I still owed over $300.00 in co-pays which I paid. This experience was EXTREMELY frustrating. more

Great Place 11/23/2009

I took the More than Words Hanen Program, and it provided an excellent way for me to communicate with my son with ASD. Kara and Breena showed what to do to keep my son engage, how to get him through daily routines with visuals, and how to keep him interested in attending in book readings.\r \r Their speech department has been great in getting my son to slowly communicate. I employ techniques that the therapists uses, and I see improvement in my son's communication. If you don't practice what they teach your child, your child will not use it at home.\r \r I'm not sure why other parents say to avoid them without providing any experiences. Also, If your insurance doesn't pay, then it's not their fault. You have to talk to your insurance company and see what it is covered. It's your resposibility. Pros: Good with children with ASD Cons: May not get to sit in during therapy more

There is a place to avoid. They will make promises that never come true. They care more about money than helping children Cons: Many more

Amazing, Amazing, Amazing 9/25/2009

We started in June 08 at Kara Dodds and Assoc. after waiting months on a waiting list at Rady's so I called Kara Dodds. They got us in right away and took our insurance and we LOVE working with Alison. I have no idea why the other review say they are difficult to work with in working with insurances? I did not find that to be the case at all. They gave me their notification of their policies from the start on billing insurance and made no declarations about therapy coverage to me. Maybe the other people really didn't have coverage? All I know is my daughter has made amazing progress and is now talking. This is truly the only place to go for speech therapy. Pros: Accepted my insurance Cons: Wish they had office in South Bay more

Avoid this speech therapy clinic, dishonest billing 8/24/2009

Watch out for this speech therapist, they will tell you everything is covered by insurance, see reviews on other sites Cons: dishonest business more

Place to avoid 7/23/2009

They forced me to take the speech therapy sessions saying that the insurance will cover it eventhough I wanted to wait until I hear from the insurance. Finally I had to pay around $1000 from my pocket. They even refused to give me any discount when I had to pay from my pocket. more

Great speech therapy clinic for children. 2/2/2009

We initially were at another clinic in North County. We took a class at Kara Dodds and Assoc. and knew that was the place our son needed to be instead. We switched clinics and the therapy was like night and day. Breena and Carey know exactly what he needs and he loves going. We stared here through early intervention and after he turned 3 it was nice to stay at a place that worked with our insurance. All I can say is, it was the best decision we made for our son and now he is talking! Pros: Location and friendly people Cons: none more

In my opinion, this is a Speech Therapy Office to definitely avoid. 2/13/2008

In my opinion, this is a Speech Therapy Office to definitely avoid. I would not recommend this agency due to our negative experience. Of course, this is only a personal opinion. Pros: location Cons: everything already noted more
